  1. Terrence is the real deal. He will start sometime during his freshman year. He is too good to keep on the bench. We saw Terrence with back spasms in the tournament. Don't under estimate him. I am sure, knowing him, he likes being told he can't do something. That will motivate him all the more to prove the jealous critics, wrong! Greatness always attracts a crowd of jealous flies. It goes with the territory. Have watched him play since middle school. He is as focused and as competitive as even Lee Humphrey and that says alot.
  2. Where can I get a copy of that photo and who took it? Great shot!
  3. Who knows until they play. Set it up and see for sure. Liberty is awesome. And Maryville is used to playing the underdog. Should be a easy win for Liberty like all the rest of Maryville's opponents this season. /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />
  4. Honestly some insiders were not shocked at all that this team won state. There were a few players ,that preseason even predicted they would win state. Many fans and players did not post on here for fear of tipping people off. Staying humble and getting no respect were key allies. I think they knew they could win it all when they realized in the preseason they were able to play Oglesby(number 1 player in state) and Bradley Central( number 3 team in state) fairly even , and without the football players (Douglas, Maples and Hunt). I think they played off on being the underdogs all season. All losses were no big deal including the loss to Powell. In fact I think it helped in light of the fact they had fairly poor fan support ,to go on the road. To play in a loud hostile place like Science Hill and beat them was just the ticket this team needed to give them the confidence to go all the way. Getting no respect kept them humble. Even now many think it was some kind of fluke that they won state /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Then to get Bradley Central in the first round was just what they needed. Basketball is all about peaking at the right time and Maryville did. It helped being the underdogs all year with a little luck here and there. I don't think they will be able to play the underdog next year. It was good while it lasted. Hopefully the fans will get behind this coach and players next year and make the difference. Clarksville and Liberty fan support is the pattern of what we should be like next year. One last point, there were many players on the bench that would have started elsewhere and that may have made a big difference. Case in point was Click and his game winning shot. Hats off to D Hunt and his great attitude and support of his teammates. He could have started on any other team and it had to be tough for him as the starting QB to sit the bench. Allen, Jolly , Pickle and all the rest were also solid contributers. Eldridge did a great job of being the glue that held this team together.....and at times it looked like they would unravel. He set the "cool" pattern and Clicks shot was the icing on the cake. It was really no surprise at all, in retrospect, to "them".
  5. This is the only time all year Maryville was rated number One and not the Underdog. It helped to play the underdog role in spite of the fact that many of us knew what they were capable of. Next year they will have to play with the football's teams target on their back. Hopefully Douglas will get his 5th and 6th rings.
  6. Damron was awesome and took it up a notch with Basile and Maples out of the game. He showed why he may be the next Oglesby who was my vote for "Mr Basketball". Nelson and Eldridge are both great coaches and both deserve credit for what this team accomplished. Eldridge came in wearing an "interim coach" stigma and did the impossible. The kids absolutely "love" him and that may be why he was able to take them to the next level. He was Mr Cool under pressure and they all responded accordingly. Eldridge managed to do the "little things" which made the "big difference". I hope he like Quarles stays a long time despite the sure temptations to go "college". He like Quarles is a "class act". Nelson laid the foundation and Eldridge built the house......both deserve alot of credit. No comparisons are necessary. Bobby Knight and Bruce Pearl have their own styles and both are effective great coaches. Agree with Williegov Damron should solidify his D1 pursuits with this finale. I have got to believe that kid from Liberty, the 5 ft point guard is going to be there too. Despite his small size he was phenomenal.
  7. Anthony is the best point guard I have seen in a long time. He is exciting to watch along with his teammates. Liberty's players and fans were a real class act! They win my award for the best team and fans in the entire tournament and I am from Maryville. Not sure who was more exciting to watch the team or your fans. You guys should be proud and I wish you well for many years to come. We had a great tournament and deserved to win AAA but our team and fans would be no match for Anthony and 31, 33, 24 etc............and most of all your "yick yak" fans???
  8. Maryville should be strong for many years to come with Douglas(the best big man in the state), and the shooting of Damron,Click and Lambert. Next year they will be tough as ever and their freshman crop is outstanding and big. Reynolds will give Maryville a unique size advantage over just about everyone. Defense was the key to Maryville's success in the tournament and the big man plugged the middle like no one else in the tournament. He deserves alot more credit and was the "big difference". Douglas will need to consider playing two sports in college and is truly a unique athlete. I think next year Click is the point , allowing Damron and Lambert to do what they do best , shooting the threes. Pickle should also be a big contributer with his inside game. Keep it going guys and repeat . By the way who were the two guys who went into the Clarkesville fan section? Must of been football players?

  11. Free throws Bearden 27 Maryville 12 That should be greater than a two to one foul ratio. And that is not even counting the non shooting fouls. You don't need to be a basketball coach to figure this one out. Unless of course if you have an axe to grind?
  12. Hats off to Bearden they deserve to represent our district based on a great season. Maryville was also not able to shut down Tony White which was key. Not sure you can say Bearden defeated Maryville though as the refs were clearly calling the game onesided. Calling touch fouls on oneside and ignoring blatant mugging on the other end was obvious to all in attendance. They essentially took Maryville out of the game. More appropriate you should have said "Bearden defeats Maryville with a lot of help from the Refs". Basketball has become much like Boxing in that the referrees or judges more often than not determine the outcome. Good luck to Bearden and hopefully you will make it all the way to the state finals if the ref's dont get in your way........
  13. Gosh don't fall into that trap. Read my last post. If we don't become ONE we will never win. It is not about who is the best shooter or who scores the most points, it is about who humbles himself to become part of the ONE team whatever that role may be. After winning the district championship the one player that impressed me the most was Brent Faulkner. He sat the bench the entire time, but you would never have known it the way he celebrated after the game! That my friends is the definition of being ONE. Jealousy and comparisons is the quickest way to destroy the goal of becoming ONE. Hopefully the players will not fall into the same trap. Maybe Faulkner can show us all , The ONE goal and The ONE team Competition can be good as long as we learn to become part of the bigger whole. Fans, parents and coaches need to learn as well and become part of the ONE. If not we become part of the problem and not the solution. Encouraging jealousy is no good for anyONE!
  14. Maryville's biggest opponent the rest of the post season is SELF. If they play unselfishly , no one can beat them . The guards including Maples,Basile,Tate,Damron and West will need to really get in the face of Beardens 3 guards and not allow any 3's or penetration. If and when they penetrate into the paint, then the big guys will have to assert themselves like they have in the past ,blocking shots and not allowing any easy layups. The Big guys,Tucker,Tate,Brown,Allen,Niethammer and Douglas will need to step up big offensively and more important defensively to beat the Dawgs. Bearden will be a prohibitive favorite with the likes of White,Sibley,Ware ,their strong posts and their 30 plus wins.Unless of course , Maryville's players find it in themselves to play unselfishly and rise above their snubbing by PrepXtra and all the so called experts.Bearden will be playing with a lot of emotion trying to avenge their loss in the district championship. To the Rebels it's big game time and its time to play with passion and control with no regrets, laying it all out on the court. Including of course your biggest opponent, SELF. Pull for each other as ONE unified team, with no jealousy and one common goal.........to win and move on, ONE game at a time. And last but not least have fun and enjoy every minute of it. You have absolutely nothing to lose.....you are winners no matter what happens, as long as you play as ONE.
  15. Bottom line is they need to play as a team to advance or they will all be sitting on the sidelines watchin Bearden and the rest of them advance on. Bearden will be a tough opponent and we better get our thoughts on Tony White and the rest of his guys and not each other. Bearden will be seeking revenge and the the guys better get up for it and play together.
  16. Yeh dheat agree with you, point guards can lose sight of their mission. That is why Lee was so great, he was as great a passer and team player as he was a shooter. Look at the points to assist ratio and that should tell you something. No one was as unselfish as Lee, a real team player.
  17. My money is on the T n T's , Tyler,Tate and Tucker since they were not even mentioned on unapproved website all region team, yet every 3AAA team had one member on the first team and Clinton (tonights game) had two, Dye and Dixon (on the first team). By the way Clinton was the only team with two so they must be real strong? TPrephoops all region picks Tony White Jr.-Bearden (MVP) Cameron Sharp-Knoxville Halls Grant Domsic-Oak Ridge Steve Pearl-Knoxville West Keith Bauer-Heritage Jonathan Dye-Clinton Chris Connor-Powell Rande Sibley-Bearden Jordan Dixon-Clinton Honorable Mention B.J. Browning-Farragut Kent Basile-Maryville Brandon McGill-Knoxville Central Michael Hermasillo-Karn Jordan Glasgow-William Blount Maryville gets snubbed again and I think the TnT's have something to prove tonight and the rest of the region tournament. Douglas ,Brown, West and Damron etc will be ready too as will be Basile the token honorable mention. Hopefully the all region team will be after the tournament and reflect head to head competition and not just stats. There is more to basketball than points scored...........how about rebounds, assists, steals and the often overlooked good defense? You might need to attend more than a few games to see the difference. Like I said before Maryville is a very dangerous foe from here on out. Get ready for the 3 tigers (T N T's) to come out of their cage in the regions.
  18. Powell and Halls are both strong. Just that both districts are flip flopped with the season best teams finishing in the bottom and vice versa. So the regions are played as they would normally be if there weren't four upsets. I don't think this has ever happened before. Halls or Powell could win it all. Maryville was and is dangerous because no one expected them to be there. Maryville seem to be operating below the radar much like William Blount (watch them too). Should be an exciting tournament and 4 will be going home tonight. After the two districts anything can happen. And dont count Bearden or Clinton out or Farragut and OR. We will see who really is all region this week.
  19. I doubt he saw many games in the region. Must have based it on PrepXtra and stats. Some deserving players are not even mentioned. Think he needs to wait until the regions and district tournaments are over so he can compare head to head rather than base it on stats and the opinions of others. This reminds me of how PrepXtra failed to even pick Maryville in the Top 10 (let alone teams to watch) and they end up winning the district. Maryville will continue to be a dangerous foe and their players have something to prove in the district. Hopefully he will attend a few games. 20. Just in case willieB forgot to read the paper today here is the DailyTimes article . By the way your Govs are a great team and hope you do well in the regions Rebels rule roost: Maryville tops Farragut, claims championship 2006-02-25 by Glenn LaFollette of The Daily Times Staff FARRAGUT -- Maryville coach Rodney Nelson can laugh about it now. The Rebels visited Farragut on Jan. 17, rolling on a seven-game winning streak. Nelson had waited the whole season for consistency, and there it was, carrying his team to a potential eighth straight. But somewhere in the vast confines of Lynn Sexton Gymnasium, the swagger got lost. ``I had to quit calling timeouts because it was making the game so long,'' Nelson said of his squad's 72-56 loss to the Admirals more than a month ago. ``We just needed to get on the bus and learn from that one.'' On Friday night, none of the Rebels were in a hurry to get home. Fourth-seeded Maryville defeated host and No. 3 seed Farragut, 56-53, in the championship game of the District 4-AAA Tournament. Rebel point guard Tyler Maples took the tournament MVP honor, with 13 points in the title match, but it took nearly all of Nelson's bench to give Maryville (19-10) its unlikely crown. Kent Basile nailed two 3-pointers in the first quarter, finishing with 13 points and key defense down the stretch to help secure the win. No other Rebels finished in double figures, but several made their presence known against the equally deep FHS team. ``This is what you call a team win,'' said Maples. ``We know we have eight or nine guys that can turn it on when we need somebody to step up. It took us all season to really get that.'' Maryville led 30-29 at the break, but soon found problems attacking the basket. Basile hit a trey followed by back-to-back layups from Rebel posts Gary Tucker and Aaron Douglas. Maples added a drive for his team's last of only four third quarter field goals. Farragut led 41-39 entering the final quarter. Admiral guard B.J. Browning nailed five straight to give his team the advantage heading in the final quarter. Browning scored 12 points, while teammate Will Akers added 14 and Scott Carroll 10. Nelson put Basile on Browning in the final frame, and he did not score again. Meanwhile, the Rebel front court got busy. Tucker saved an out-of-bounds ball, called a timeout and then scored on a hook shot after the delay to tie the game at 41-41. Maples streaked the length of the court on the next offensive series for a two-point lead. Douglas scored the next four for Maryville to respond to a seven-point Farragut surge. The Rebels trailed 48-47 when Basile got the lead back on a drive and foul. Carroll answered for FHS with a pair of free throws. The matchup was slowly headed toward a final shot for glory and grandeur. But Rebel guard Luke West stole the ball from Browning and passed to Maple,s who converted a three-point play for a 52-50 lead. Farragut (20-11) had won 10 straight coming into the game. The Rebels were building on a new seven-game winning streak. Maryville forward Curtis Tate got another steal with 13 seconds remaining and iced both free throws for a 54-50 lead with 8.8 on the clock. ``I hadn't really been making them in practice,'' said Tate. ``As soon as the first one fell, I kind of knew I could do it.'' The Maryville faithful were still in danger of heartbreak. Akers nailed a quick trey to cut the deficit to 54-53 with three seconds remaining, but Tate would come through again to secure the title. The senior post was fouled on the next inbounds and finished the game with another set of shots at the charity stripe. Nelson said he has really been waiting on this kind of play all season. ``The chemistry is really good right now,'' he said. ``Everyone is really stepping up and they've adjusted to their roles. Douglas, Tucker, Drew Brown, Josh Allen, I can't name all the guys that really stepped in and gave us good minutes. ``We're about quality minutes with this team, not numbers minutes. That's working for us right now.'' Maryville now advances to face Clinton in the Region 2 Tournament at Sevier County High School on Monday. Bearden 59, Govs 49 The Bulldogs' trio of Tony White Jr., Rande Sibley and B.J. Ware are enough to handle for any team. If one of Bearden's post players scores too, then it's a done deal. William Blount fell to the top-seeded Bulldogs, 59-49, in the consolation game of the district tournament Friday. Bulldogs post Damonte Simpson scored 10 first half points, 16 for the game, to create a balance too difficult for the Govs to overcome. ``We really kept with them for three quarters,'' said WB coach David Baumann. ``But lately, we've have trouble putting together a good final couple of minutes. A team like Bearden will really jump on that if you don't play a complete game.'' William Blount (17-12) was led by Jordan Glasgow with 18 points on three treys. Glasgow was hot early, nailing 13 first-half points. Gov guard Josh Hilbert picked up the load in the second half, scoring 17. The rest of Baumann's team combined for only nine points. The Govs trailed 26-25 at the half and only 40-38 after the third quarter. But then White got rolling. The talented Bulldogs point guard scored nine points in the final frame to push Bearden for its 30th win of the season. Both teams advance to Monday's region tournament. William Blount will face Powell. Good luck willieB
  21. Maryville lived up to their dangerous billing and Maples, Basile and Tate showed why they are three of the best players in the Region. Unfortunately for Maryville is they will actually be playing one of the top teams in the other district (Clinton) while WB and Bearden get two of the weaker 3AAA teams in Halls and Powell.
  22. The Big guys played tough , finally using their size and blocking ability to a big advantage. They will have to do so against the bigger Farragut while stopping their 3 point shooters. Hopefully they will play man to man and keep after them. Farragut unlike Bearden has a good inside game with tall post players who can shoot as well from the 3 point line as they do in the paint. The loud hometeam crowd will make it even tougher as William Blount experienced. Maryville needs to work on their foul shooting , errant passes and will need to make more 3's to beat Farragut. I predict the team who makes the most 3's will win this one.
  23. Maryville beat Bearden last night and play Farragut in championship game. Should be a tough one playing Farragut at home, but the Rebs have the talent to do well against anyone. Maryville is a "dangerous and multi talented team"........
