  1. I think Memphis Booker T. Washington can make a claim. Lorenzen Wright Did Lorenzen's father attend BTW? He played in the NBA The guard for the Memphis Grizzles (He played for the University of Memphis) Also, I think Memphis Hamilton can make a claim.
  2. If Memphis Hamilton can run the table they will join these other 11 teams to win the TSSAA Championship undefeated. (Note: I said the TSSAA Championship.) 1943 Chattanooga Central, 33-0 Championship game score: 48-30 1949 Humboldt, 44-0 46-38 1950 Happy Valley, 36-0 34-26 1965 Murfreesboro Central, 32-0 41-33 1966 Nashville Pearl, 31-0 63-54 1969 Chattanooga Riverside, 32-0 44-39 1971 Nashville Cameron, 32-0 56-50 1974 Melrose, Large Div. 33-0 66-30 1975 Bolton, Small Div. 35-0 103-74 1993 Battle Ground Acdy., A 33-0 74-71 1997 Perry County, A 37-0 82-47 Source: TSSAA website.
  3. The last time I checked Memphis and Shelby County is in West Tennessee. Does this happen in other place of the state? The Jackson Sun's all West Tennessee team does not include Shelby County. As if it was located in Mississippi or Arkansas. Is Chattagnooa part of East Tennessee or Georgia? Is Bristol in East Tennessee or Virginia? (No...not a good example because half the city is in Virginia. But you get my point.)
  4. Ok, no takers huh? Let me put it another way. Which school can claim more than Memphis Treadwell? Hank McDowell Andre Turner Elliot Perry Penny Hardaway Note: Melrose fans don't say Larry Finch and Ronnie Robertson because they were drafted by the NBA, but played for the ABA.
  5. The only Phoenix players from Tennessee, that I remember were: Elliot Perry - Memphis Treadwell Penny Hardaway - Memphis Treadwell
  6. There has been plenty of NBA players who started their carrers in our great state. But which Tennessee High School has been the starting point for most? In addition to naming the school, please name the players.
  7. Xmastree got it. Bingo played for Melrose, Tulsa and Cleaveland. 44 points I remember Popeye Jones, but Popeye doesn't have his NBA Jersey retired.
  8. Nice try. Hints: West Tennessee high school, a Mid-Western College and a Eastern Conference NBA team.
  9. In another thread, I mentioned that the most successful basketball player from this great state of ours was Bobby "Bingo" Smith. He had an outstanding carrer in high school, college, and the NBA. He was oustanding in many other sports. What high school, college and NBA team did he played for? Also, he is the only Tennessee high school player, as far as I know, that has his NBA jersey retired. Hint: He wore the #7. (I'm just dropping a little Tennessee basketball history down.)
  10. I'm an old school guy. I'm 45 years old. Penny Hardaway was the most talented. However, John Gunn was a 6' 9" center from the 1974 Memphis Melrose team which went undefeated and won the state in the last championship game played in Memphis. He played one year for Memphis State University and died of a rare blood disease in his second year. Had he lived I believe he would had been dubbed the best player ever. The most sucessful player from Tennessee was Bobby 'Bingo' Smith from Memphis Melrose, that is high school, college and NBA.
  11. Bolivar Fans..... As a Memphian, I must commend you for showing up and supporting your team at the FED EX. If it was your first visit, how did you like the arena?
  12. TraderB, if only the coaches on our list of the best Memphis coaches had Mitchell's talent. Thanks for reminding me of Coach Jimmy Adams. I should had remember that being a U of M grad, class of '86.
  13. I just read an interesting thread regarding the Mitchell Tigers. This is a team loaded with talent but has lost three games. Many post suggested the losses are due to poor coaching. The same was said about Hamilton, despite being undefeated. Who are the best boys basketball coaches in Memphis? My list: Terry Tippet (former White Station coach) Wes Henning (Ridgeway) Sylvester Ford (Fairley) Raligh -Egypt's coach (I can't recall his name.) Reginal Mosby (East) He had very good success in the past. Two or three state titles, but has lost his touch the last few years.
  14. Galilee, Thanks for the info. I think alot of Memphis teams will be load. Hamilton is another to keep an eye on.
  15. Grizzle: There were thousands of Melrose fans at the game, but you are going to apply the actions of a few to the majority and that is simply not right. The actions of a few can greatly take away what makes the high school football experience enjoyable. But don't apply that to the thousands of great law abiding fans that follow Golden Wildcat football. Let's not start this all over again.
  16. I thought this was a very intereting post from another thread (I'm sorry I can't remember who post it to give him proper credit): The Maryville Rebels are a very well coached machine. Beating them starts by giving them the respect they deserve and be willing to match their intensity and focus the entire game. Many opposing coaches have failed to cash in on their chances at beating the Maryville system. It's hard to beat a team that is well prepared for the all physical and mental aspects of the game and the opponent. Coach Quarles and his staff know the strengths and weaknesses of their players and develope a chemistry that fits the players. He also has a good feel for the changes in momentum that applies to all big games. Without getting into every detail I'll address the topic. This Maryville team as some short comings in physical ability. The Q-back position has some limitations on physical ability but has shown improvement lately. The running game is about the best I've seen with the blocking schemes and running backs and coach Quarles has taken advantage of the defense at the proper moments to pass. The key is slowing down the run and yes , man to man coverage on the receivers. If your defense makes a mistake at any position they will see it . One Q-back has a limited arm and the other has limited maturity. This offense has been making a few mistakes and turnovers in the second half. Opponents have failed to score on these mistakes. The Maryville defense is very well coached. To beat it you don't try and beat the whole unit, just execute or overpower the area you want to go. As with any good team the defense will adjust to stop success but usually creates a weakness somewhere else. Most of the big plays the Rebels have given up come from the offense doing the unusual. The Rebel players are well coached in their area of responsibility. They know how and when to give help on certain plays. Plays against the flow of the defense are an example, where the areas of responsibility get confused. But you still need speed runners and backside blocking schemes to break the pursuit. Most of the big plays the Rebels have given up have been against the grain. Slow developing predicatable plays will not work because they read very well and are effective with line penetration. In either case many more tallented teams the Rebels have faced have failed to beat the system. Any thoughts?
  17. Congrats to the Golden Wildcats and Rebels. Here we go round two. I think it will be a defensive game, although the offenses for both teams will score more than they did last year. I think turnovers and special teams will make the difference. I know that Melrose has a great special teams unit and can make the big play. Also, the kicking game is solid. I don't know anything about Maryville's special teams, other than what I saw last year. I will be calling my co-worker and Maryville alumn this week to get the breakdown. I'm looking toward a great weekend of high school football (South Panola v Olive Branch in Batesville Friday night....yes, I know nobody cares and Melrose and Maryville Saturday! My Tigers did well against Duke (University of Memphis Class of '86).
  18. KWC I'm fully aware of who the current Melrose coach is and where he coached before Melrose and his coaching style. His style is still being debated in Orange Mound. You haven't, my friend, addressed my point. OMW, you're correct about the Whitehouse game. I'm interested in hearing your keys.
  19. OMW, I understand your points, and I agree about the kicking game. However, think back to the second state championship game Melrose played under Coach Tim Thompson in Nashville. I was at both games. Melrose had an high powered passing game, but the cold affected the quarterback's accuracy. Two years ago, I agree that Coach Ingram was more conservative than Thompson; however, they did have a very good passing game that year. Again, Melrose relied mostly on the run. Now one could also agrue that Coach Ingram was more conservative than usual that night. However, I agree. If Melrose kicking game was better, then the series would be tied 1 -1. I hope to see you there tomorrow night!
  20. Thank you again for your perspective from Bear colored glasses. I guess the reporter who covered the game doesn't know anything about football either. Again congrats to DA and I'm sure there will be a rematch in the state game. Nothing for the last 5 years tells me otherwise.
  21. Hello everyone! I picked up four tickets at Melrose yesterday. There have been some very good posts on this thread. All I can say is that both schools have great respect for each other's programs. Hillsboro leads the series 2-0. This should be a great game. In my last post I mentioned how cold it was (correction: I talked about the snow and OMW mentioned the cold). There will be a strong cold front moving in on Thursday. Friday will be a very cold day and this may affect Melrose's passing game. When Melrose was in 3A, they lost to Henry County. I think that's right. However, it was bitterly cold that day. In both losses to Hillsboro, it was cold. Don't get me wrong, Melrose can play in cold weather, but I don't think they are as effective in very cold weather. OMW what is your take?
  22. Thank you footballguru. However, I read that the score was 14-6 when Bishop Byrne made critical errors on special teams which led to Davidson touchdowns. This happened the first time they played. No excuses, it's part of football, but I would not say that Davidson dominated.
