  1. Didn't Powell face Greeneville in November in the LandAir tournament? Oh yea.....they got beat by Sullivan Central because that's who Powell played and beat them too. So how did Greeneville improve so much and who do you have now that you didn't have in November? Maybe you guys should be asking Sullivan Central about Powell? Needless to say, Powell has improved a little since then, don't ya think? I see you remember our D-1 player though......"decent" lol
  2. ha! yea, you might be getting ready to learn what "whining" is about.
  3. Yea I think they do care about the D-1 signee. It may not impressed Bearden that much because their outside game was unstoppable, a situation that isn't always reliable....ask Oak Ridge or even Clinton for that matter. And actually I think if Smith is still bothered by the elbow to the back, he might concur a little. I will agree that Powell's guards just didn't get the job done Friday night and that was frustrating on the whole. I mean to have an inside game, you gotta get the ball down the court, then after that, you have to make good passes or else...well, hence the outcome Friday night.
  4. lol, sounds like someone is either in denial or just has no clue.
  5. I'm not commenting about the way Lee plays. He is one of the best players in the state even in basketball as far as I'm concerned. But when you are getting elbows to the back, shoved around on the court and trash talked, if would effect your game too. I'm just saying that refs should know what sort of mentality others players have when they play Powell and their D-1 signee. That mentality is that they are much more aggressive against him and if you ask me, those refs didn't make the calls against Bearden that they should have and no, that's not fair. But that's ok, come Monday night the panthers will be rested.
  6. I think it's pretty fair to say that losing teams will be "gracious" in defeat when the winners are "humble" in triump.
  7. That was just example a cheap shot by the ref.
  8. Does it not seem as though everyone is wanting a cheap shot at Lee Smith? Is it any wonder why he acts like he does. These people who are jealous of this young man should really get over it and stop ridiculing him. I'd say it's pretty hard for a kid to deal with jealousy from other kids, but to have to deal with that crap from kids and their parents??? And I say that because I actually heard some of the things said in the stands by Bearden parents. No wonder he acts like he does. From what I see, it's like fighting fire with fire. It will be good for him when he goes D-1 to be playing against actual players who don't have anything to prove when it comes to dealing with Lee.
  9. I certainly think the Panthers would back you on this comment after their game against them tonight. I have no clue what the foul ratio was, but clearly Powell got a lot more calls against them. I hate to say it, but it just looked too much like the refs had issues with some of Powell's players and their notorious "bad" attitudes before the panthers even came on the floor. Officials like that really shouldn't be calling games because if players have bad attitudes, then it's really the coaches job to take care of that, not the refs.
  10. Powell 55 Bearden 79 Unfortunately, the Panthers aren't the regional champs this year, but hey, they weren't even supposed to be playing for the regional championship, right? From 5th place to district champs and regional tourney runner up...nice job guys! You certainly have nothing to be ashamed of!! And come on, realistically, how can a team that's played 10 games over the last three weeks NOT be tired? In my opinion, Bearden's Tony White Jr. was unstoppable tonight. I was very disappointed with the way that Sevier County ran that final game though. After both teams had to drive in all week to a school whose only dog in the fight was that they were part of 4-AAA, they absolutely did NOT respect fans from Powell by letting Bearden's student section stand in the center of the bleachers so that no one could watch the ball game. But hey....center of the bleachers, center of the world....that all speaks for itself. Between fatigue from playing, fatigue from driving and also being the opposing region, both Powell's boys and girls appearance in the final game speaks for itself as well. All in all, congratulations to Bearden on their "win" and good luck to both teams representing Region II in the sub state.
  11. You can check out the brackets on www.jim314.com website. Region 2 games start on Tuesday. Hope Clinton gets their act together.....geesh!
  12. Look, I hope Halls beats Bearden. It's always been my belief that 3 is a stronger district than 4 anyway. There's no doubt in my mind that between Sharp and Segars, they can out score Bearden from the outside. What it comes down to though is this.....is your team ready for the season to be over or not? Now is certainly not the time to blaming each other for anything other than a lack of desire to not win. I think when each player on the team just worries about overcoming his own attitude and play rather than his teammate's short comings, then that's a sign of real maturity. You certainly don't have to make a player feel worse if he has a bad game because he is certainly dealing with that himself. It doesn't help if everyone else is giving him grief too. Halls needs to put it behind them and move on. Remember, Powell had to do that too when you guys beat them. Good Luck against Bearden. Anything can happen. And I certainly hope that Powell gets to see Maryville again
  13. See what you don't realize is that nobody said that Hargis did all that by himself. But because he is the point guard, a position that operates much like the pitcher in baseball, or the quarterback in football, he is the player who orchestrates the execution of the game. Hargis worked to make his fellow team mates perform by making good passes, protecting the ball with good ball handling, and contributing his support in points, rebounds, steals, assists, etc. When players realize the way to play any ball is to play unselfishly, then the rewards and pay off will come. Players in those positions should work to make the whole team execute rather than taking on all that responsibility alone. Yes, Hargis is playing with a lot of talent, but he is also talented and has had to learn that he is just as responsible for his role in the wins as the rest of those players. Consider also that Powell's wins weren't just because of three players. TC Dinkins and Jason Seymore are two players who performed to boost Powells wins against West, Oak Ridge and Halls. Lee Smith was held to two points during one game. When a point guard plays his role unselfishly, then the others will too.
  14. Here's what so funny about this. I've said ALL ALONG that "some" have been jealous of the basketball "brotherhood" at Powell. Want proof, read above. Hargis is the best pg in Knox County and he proved that by leading his team through a 4 game winning streak in the tournament (when it really counts) beating all the teams who had beat them during season play. That record speaks far louder than any prepxtra stats. It's unfortunate that at the beginning of the season, Hargis let certain people who claim to be his friends get in his head and influence the way he played ball, but that's a maturity issue and one that he is obviously working through as his current level of play certainly exceeds any other point guards in Knox County's. I think everyone will agree that it's good to see this kid grow up and rise to his potential. Powell's players have certainly dealt with their fair share of "growing pains" this year and their season record certainly reflects it. But if they continue playing ball like they are, they should be heading to the state. I think the situation at Powell can be a good lesson to everyone when it comes to team ball. That lesson is stop selfishly glorifying yourself and trying to take the credit for what the whole team must do to win: Not just one player. When it comes to winning, it's all about the whole team and the team desire to win; not the individuals, not about who starts, and certainly not the seniority. Has anyone seen the movie "Miracle?" Congratulations to Lee Smith for being name tournament MVP and to the Panthers for winning their second consecutive district tourney crown. And good luck to their continued success. EVERYONE is supporting your WINNING!
  15. Brace yourself futbolfan, all indications seem to be supporting what they are saying about Lowe getting the job.....unfortunately as you will see, schools don't always do what's in the best interest of the kids but what is convenient for the system. Another factor is that present assistant coaches are afraid of being replaced by new ones from a new HC. Indications also suggest a lot of Powell people will take their football players and go elsewhere until Powell proves they have a coach worth anything. Won't that be fun "growing pains ?" The only hope that can be is that the applicant (someone other than Lowe) talked to the administration about the assistant coaching situation. Don't you think a new HC wouldn't necessarily come in and "clean house" during his first year? By the way, can anyone tell me how Powell's super midgets did this year?
  16. All I've got to say is that if Powell gets by Oak Ridge tomorrow night, Clinton will probably be in trouble. Clinton has swept Halls through the season, so I don't doubt that the dragons will be in the finals. If Powell is defeated by Oak Ridge, which past performance indicates they will, then Powell will be playing Halls in the consolation bracket. If Oak Ridge meets Clinton in the finals, Oak Ridge will be going to the region as the number 2 seed, with Powell as 3 and Halls as 4. If Hargis remains confident in his play, I think Powell should beat Oak Ridge. Hargis is the best junior point guard in the district when he wants to be.
  17. I don't know about you ole dad, but I'm inclined to believe that it has something to do with visors worn upside down, pony-tails, and ruffling each other's feathers. Let's all hope that all of the boys now will eventually have good role models for how move beyond all of this and learn to behave appropriately in all situations.
  18. so I guess that's assuming that west will beat powell thursday night? West really is on quite a roll.
  19. Thanks, dude! even if it's not all at the high school level too I guess. Go Knox County!
  20. KR-If you are referring to me as "Tony," you are incorrect about me being Jared McGaha's father. I've stated this before, I'm not the kid's father and in this regard have no ties to him. I have been watching Powell football and basketball for a very long time though, so in addition to that, I do watch McGaha play alongside of Lee Smith. Heck, not only have I seen Lowe play ball, but Daryle and John too. You mention Lowe working on getting scholarships for his players. Is it incorrect to assume that head coaches do that anyway? I was under the impression that all of Powell's assistant coaches do this for their players and the most notable ones at Powell are in the shape and form of Larry Stephens, Daryle Smith and Phil Wilks. Zane Bruhin- Marshall (Wilks?) Cody Watts- EKU (Stephens?) Lee Smith-UT (his dad?) Can you say Lowe actually has any influence in that regard? I mean come on, he's only being involved in any of this for a sum total of FOUR years. Which leads me to another question. To be tenured in Knox County, don't you have to be working at the same school for 3 years? If I'm not mistaken, this year will be the completion of Lowe's 2nd at Powell. And another question. When will they release who else has applied for this job?
  21. Is Halls really tied with Clinton for second? That's hard to believe. It appears as though Halls has won their last two games against Campbell County and Karns, whereas Clinton is coming off of some losses. I still have to go with Clinton winning this game. When Halls does lose, will that place them in 3rd?
  22. Thank you HTV, because I was just going to say if I had to suffer through another State of the Union address, I was going to resort to alcoholism.
  23. Well BC, it's Feb. 13th and none of this has happened.....thank goodness! Interesting comparison made over the weekend about bringing in a new coach to a mediocre program. Guy was talking about the situation regarding UT's basketball program. While Buzz Peterson was a good guy, great player, he didn't do much for UT's program. Enter Bruce Pearl. Same players, different philosophy, now nationally ranked in the top 10. Calm down KR and don't lose your composure. I wasn't knocking the fact that you coached Powell's super midgets. Middle school players have to master their fundamentals and work the execution in order to move the game to the next level in high school. They also start working on the maturity that goes along with it. That is to say, they actually start "thinking." Up until that point, it's just a matter of doing what the coach says. Being a middle school coach is no easy thing as I'm sure anyone will say. I'm sure your former players appreciate you and hold a lot of respect for you as does the ones who you said got mad at you for leaving and going to Central's domain. So please, don't take offense to my suggestion that Lowe should consider coaching the super midgets. So what's next in this process? When do the interviews begin and how long will that process last? What's after that? Campaign speeches?
