  1. Has anybody corrected Greeneville's nickname? It is Greene Devils. This thread was started nine years ago. I'm sure someone has corrected it by now, but I didn't see it in the first four pages and I'm not going to go through 21 pages. Anyhow, Greene Devils, not Green. The best HS nickname is Syrupmakers. Cairo HS in Georgia. ESPN named it the best HS nickname in the nation. Their girls are called Syrupmaids.
  2. One of the more shocking scores I've seen in a while.
  3. "Big 44" class approved: http://highschoolsports.blog.ajc.com/2015/08/17/ghsa-votes-to-add-7th-classification-formula-for-cityprivate-schools/

  5. If it were me, I would put all schools together in three classes and make all the privates play in AAA.
  6. Letter to editor in Georgia wants separation of public and private: http://www.ledgernews.com/opinion/letters/lack-of-parity-in-high-school-sports/article_52e31a7e-ccb5-11e4-83ef-2f9c7cabbf32.html
  7. Great guy and coach. But I'll always think of him as Kirkman coach first. I think he does, too.
  8. Just saw on Stump's Facebook page that he will have the Tyner baseball team on his show tonight. It starts at 11 pm EDT. The show lasts for one or two hours, I think depending on the season. You can see the show online at the link below: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/uctv-265
  9. Name is actually spelled Chae, not Shae. Baylor site says it was a one-hitter. http://www.baylorschool.org/calendars/detail.aspx?pageaction=ViewSinglePublic&LinkID=13845&ModuleID=13&StartDate=3/31/2014&TeamID=1207
  10. I follow Stump Martin's Facebook and Twitter accounts. It is @StumpOnSports on Twitter. Stump is the authority for HS sports in SE Tennessee and N. Georgia. In fact, he probably knows Memphis better than the Memphis writers. Anyhow, he posts baseball scores regularly. Yesterday, I saw Tyner 3, Baylor 0. Not having followed prep baseball that closely this year, I assumed this was an April Fools joke. Not so. Nathan, who works with Stump, replied that Tyner pitcher Shea Butler threw a two-hitter to beat Baylor. Then, the next day, Tyner and Baylor were tied 3-3 in the 6th before Tyner made a bunch of errors and lost the game. Nathan commented that Tyner will win their district and possibly their region. Said they are very good and well coached. To me this is a very interesting story. I asked Nathan when was the last time Tyner beat Baylor. He guessed '86.

  12. http://www.newschannel9.com/sports/features/headlines/stories/vid_97.shtml We in Chattanooga like to claim Gordon Lee HS as our own, but they are actually a few miles over the Georgia line in Chickamauga, Ga. Anyhow, after three appeals to the Georgia High School Association, they were finally awarded the co-state champion trophy in person by GHSA head Ralph Swearingin.

  16. Which high schools in Atlanta have ice hockey? I'm not aware of any.
  17. In playoff competition... http://www.tfponline.com/news/2012/jan/11/ghsa-splits-class-a-for-playoffs/?sportspreps http://blogs.ajc.com/georgia-high-school-sports/2012/01/10/ghsa-votes-to-separate-class-a-public-private-schools-for-playoffs-and-championships/
  18. State record holder in the 200 Jackson falls to Yarnell at the Vol Classic in Knoxville? Any info on Yarnell? What about Hardin Valley? New school?
  19. I think the new rackets have hurt tennis. No shotmaking anymore. Few good rallies. I think fans pick up on this. If we went back to wood rackets or at least rackets with smaller heads, I think this would help the game.
  20. They're in Mississippi for crying out loud. It should be in the By-Laws or constitution that a school must be in Tennessee to be in the TSSAA. This is absurd. Just as absurd as when we had Tennessee state championship softball games played in the state of Mississippi. Should be a rule against that, too.
  21. Enjoyed the comments. I wonder -- is tennis a country club sport in Spain, Argentina, Switzerland, Russia, etc.? I don't know if it is or isn't. I get the feeling that it is not and they are getting tough, hungry middle class kids who have a fire in them -- something our kids don't have. Just a hunch. Am I right? PS: Agree that we will likely never see any truly great prep tennis players anymore. Like you said, if they are really good anymore, they are not playing HS. I guess the frosh at Brentwood High is good, but if you are really truly great, you are blitzing people as a frosh on the way to the state title. That didn't happen. Rhyne Williams, Bo Seal -- these guys don't play HS. Maybe Seal did a year at Baylor.
  22. BTW...to dawgs, playa or whomever....... What has happend to American tennis? Why is US college tennis dominated by foriegn players? We are a nation of 300 million people. We are the richest nation in the world! Why are there no male American players contending for major titles anymore? Who is our best pro player these days? Andy Roddick? Please. What are we doing wrong???
  23. Thanks, dawgs. Great info. BTW, that Germantown team of the early '80s featured Mark Herrington, two-time state singles champ, who I believe played college tennis for UT.
  24. No public/private split on this board, as far as I know. So who is/was the best, regardless of whether he played in the TSSAA or not? Roscoe Tanner? Zan Guerry? Brian Gottfired? Tim Wilkison? Andy Avram? Chris Woodruff? There is a Chattanooga theme going on here because Chattanooga is easily the best tennis city in this state, by any measure you could come up with.
  25. Interesting comments all around. playa, what do you mean by third set rule? I would have to see all the teams play to make a definite opinion, but on paper, this year's SHHS team appears to be closer in talent to the top privates than you suggest. JMO. I had forgotten about the Bearden team. They would have to get the nod, I suppose. Surprising they did not win the state. This begs the question, who was on the Webb and Baylor teams that year that finished ahead of Bearden? I agree talent is not what it used to be here and in the USA overall. I remember Chris Woodruff used to drive to McCallie from Knoxville to get instruction from Eric Voges.
