  1. This is a no-split system, right? Maybe we add 10 students for 1st rd, 20 for 2nd, 30 for quarterfinal, 40 for semis, 50 for championship... or something similar. Subtract 5 for missing the playoffs.... I'm against the split (or against having 8 state champions in football, anyway).... Another thing... how will this sytem affect other sports? I'd hate to think that Kingston was in one district in baseball, a different in football, another different for softball, etc, etc....
  2. OK, Ego, I'll try to answer. This plan eventually leads to a classification which will be dominated by Red Boiling Springs, Union County, Claiborne County, etc. I'm all for a classification that has Maryville, Riverdale, MBA, etc., in it... but what happens to the doormats? Also, if South Pittsburg wins several titles in a short time, should a school with an actual enrollment around 200 be placed in a class with schools with an actual enrollment of 2000?
  3. When is the jamboree? I'm assuming that Kingston isn't participating...
  4. If Kingston has another bad season, they may belong in this category... 1996 5-6 lost 56-14 in 1st round to Tyner 1997 4-6 no playoffs 1998 14-1 state runner up 1999 9-3 won weak region 2000 9-2 lost in 1st round to Rutledge 2001 4-6 no playoffs Am I being too hard on the Jackets?
  5. Well, I wouldn't send them all to Kingston. Emory Heights, Swan Pond, Pine Ridge Road south of Ruritan Road to Kingston. Webster Pike, Big Emory to OS. Everyone else to Rockwood. By the way Goose, when's the RCN football guide coming out?
  6. I hope you're right, goose! My wife may have stumbled onto the best solution of all... by sheer accident. She (wrongly) thought that if Harriman residents voted to dissolve HCS, that they would close all their buildings. While I was explaining to her why they wouldn't, it dawned on me that this might be a much better solution than anything else I've heard!
  7. I'll post more about the Kingston Yellowjackets as I find out...
  8. Boorelly, I wish Kingston could get its swagger back! Seeing two teams with that swagger in 1989 was one of the best h.s. atmospheres at any game I've ever attended. Of course, AE and Glasper gave RCHS plenty of bulletin board material the week before, and harassing the Kingston players during warm-ups didn't help. I think some of those AE players thought they were going to be playing the 85/86 Jackets!
  9. We're getting close, 'twan... 5 more weeks. Maybe you can catch a week 0 game to pass the time before SCHS starts!
  10. If Clay Co commission decided to close HSHS, would those folks get to vote? What do you get when you cross a Wildcat with a bulldog? Or a timberwolf, for that matter? Or when you mix purple and gold with black and gold?
  11. Didn't like Lumberjacks, or didn't like plaid? Or both? ...Or, since you're on the Cumberland River, could have been called the beavers....
  12. How about lumberjacks? Could come out in Lamar! plaid shirts and stuff...
  13. tbp, AERR's signature is deep-rooted in the AE swagger. AE brings an unmatched confidence, for better or for worse. It's kind of the U of Miami attitude from the 80s. They step on the field, whether it's against Scott High or Portland, expecting to win.
  14. I think that would be a good nickname, although I'd try to shade that red and gold as far away from FSU (and Cannon Co, for that matter) as possible! I'm just glad they nixed Tigers, Wildcats, Bobcats, etc.
  15. Would someone, ELA perhaps, please explain, in detail, all the following terms? Private school (for this discussion) Public school " " " Magnet school Vouchers Charter Schools Work Study Zones Thanks.
  16. This could get really ugly, I'm afraid. I had made some posts on these boards (what if..?), but I didn't know until this thread that consolidation was back on the table. The facts of the matter are this: OS doesn't want to consolidate, Midway doesn't want to consolidate, and the other three will be pretty upset if they try to combine Kingston, Harriman, Rockwood and leave the other two alone. That's probably what killed the 91 referendum. All I can say is, try to pin your commission candidates down on this issue before next Thursday. In my district, Troy Beets is a candidate. Mr. Beets was the leading proponent of the 1991 consolidation (he was on school board at the time, perhaps chair).

    Best HS game ever?

Kingston/Rockwood in 91 was a good reg. season game, Kingston won 14-12; Rockwood lost a fumble deep in Kingston territory late in the 4th. 92 wasn't a good game with Rockwood pouring it on 37-6! I've already mentioned the White House game, but some of my other faves: Kingston over Marion County 7-6, 1993 3A quarterfinal Alcoa over Kingston, 22-15, 1989 AA semifinal Kingston over Sweetwater 22-21, 1991 AA 2nd rd Kingston over Sweetwater 19-17, 1988 reg season Kingston over AE, 23-13 1989 AA 1st rd Kingston over Harriman, 1989 reg season, 21-14 OT ..just to name a few... 18. That depends on whether or not you want to bring DII back in, RGE.
  19. But how would propping up their enrollment help their gate receipts? They'll still play us every other year in football and every year in basketball, softball, and baseball, as well as you guys... plus Alcoa in football every other year, and each other. And Rockwood draws a big crowd every other year with Midway (football), especially with it on Thursday... I sure hope they don't make this decision based on anything sports related!
  20. It simplifies the schedule in some ways, but complicates it in others... Harriman, Rockwood, and OS are in a 6-team region...If you look at their opponents in weeks 7 & 9, there's some really strange games... Harriman has Grundy County (3A, lower mid-state) and Cumberland County (nearby 5A) on their schedule. It's just weird. Maybe if the schedules were juggled a bit, they could play teams like Kingston, LC, and Loudon later in the season, and have games that were both more competitive and would have a bigger gate.
  21. OS 91, why is it you think that Harriman will want to take students from OS? I looked up the tssaa enrollments (which may be a little outdated, but probably close enough)... and the difference between the two was a whopping 109 students. That's just not that much to me... I sure can't see it as a big enough number to justify wholesale changes to the system...Those 109 students would only account for 109/(716+507+398+364+245=2230) or roughly 5% of RC students. I'm firmly against consolidation, but I'll look and see what some plan possibilities could be ...
  22. Hey, KevB, it would almost make more sense to have an inter-county agreement with Union (?) County to have them take over Washburn, wouldn't it? I can't see them combining Washburn and Rutledge across Clinch Mtn....
  23. Here are some small rural schools in my neighborhood... In Roane County, we have Midway, OS, Rockwood, and Harriman that have enrollments as seen in my previous post. I guess the Roane schools are the most likely of the ones I'll mention to consolidate, although it will be met with *fierce* resistance. In 1990-91 there were people who said (jokingly?) that if RC School Board closed Midway they would blow up the Hwy 58 bridge... Morgan County's enrollments are as follows: Wartburg Central 415, Coalfield 194, Sunbright 181, and Oakdale 159 (by TSSAA's numbers, Oakdale is the smallest public school competing in football..) Anyway, these schools, as small as they are, aren't that likely to consolidate because of the terrain of Morgan County... Greenback in eastern Loudon County has an enrollment of 255. Greenback is unlikely to close because it is on the east side of the TN river, and is closer to Maryville than it is to either Loudon or LC. (Of course, Greenback's natural rival, Vonore, is another school that was closed. It was combined with Madisonville to become Sequoyah in the early/mid-90s.) And, last, but not least, we have Oneida, enrollment 359. I'm not overly familiar with that part of Scott County, but I think Oneida is a separate system from Scott High, so it's unlikely to be closed.
  24. VG, here are Roane's enrollments: Roane County High (Kingston) 716 Oliver Springs ------------- 507 Harriman -------------------- 398 Rockwood -------------------- 364 Midway ---------------------- 245 * these numbers were from tssaa.org
