  1. Unfortunately, that is correct, if you are in Division I which Knoxville Catholic elected to be or stay, an athlete cannot play sports and receive financial aid. Only in D-II can you accept financial aid and still be eligible for sports. All students receive aid in some form or another, for instance in public schools, what parent could afford the cost of educating their child without the help of thousands of taxpayers, even the taxpayers of private school students. I want fairness on the playing field and off it, how this is ever achieved fully is still unanswered. Here's to all our athletes having a safe school year and season and to thank them for all the joy they give so many of us.
  2. The parish contribution is paid directly to the school and therfore the actual tuition cost is less the parish contribution. None of this assistence is given to the student directly, or to his or her parents, only straight to the school to offset the tremendous expense of running a school. So is there some extra financial assistence for catholic students who are contributing members of their parish, yes there is. After all, the people in the parishes are the ones who ultimately bulit the schools with their financial assistence to begin with.
  3. Actually tuition at Father Ryan is 7,350 for a catholic student with parish assistence, without parish assistence, it is 8,650, non-catholic is 11,795, this does not include various fee's, books, etc which can easily run a couple of thousand more. The non-catholic student and catholic student is eligible for financial aid depending on income of parents. JPII on the other hand charges Catholic students appromimately 800 dollars a year more than Ryan to attend. But they charge non-catholic students over two thousand less to attend there. If I were a JPII parent, I would have some serious questions about that. St. Cecilia is higher still. Generally speaking tuition rises approximately 7% a year.
  4. uote name='Cowboys Up' post='826086898' date='Aug 1 2006 - 07:42 PM'] I'm ok with someone trying to find out what is going on. Fieldman and DaddyJuice both said that atheletes can't accept financial aid. Bratmav was just checking it out. It's possible that the nice lady on the phone was wrong. When there are so many rules, people can get confused...case in point...the Ravenwood football team dressed out in pads before they were allowed to. They got sanctioned by TSSAA for it. It was simply a mistaken reading of the rules by the coach. Perhaps more questions need to be asked to find out what the rules really are. You need to read my earlier post again. I said that financial aid is based on need only, it doesn't matter whether you play sports or not. If you are Division I and want to play sports, you cannot accept financial aid from the school, if you are in Division II, then financial aid is there for anyone who applies and qualifies for it. The private schools who decided to stay in Division I cannot offer financial aid on tuition etc to athletes. There is a catholic rate with a parish card and a catholic rate without a parish card and non catholic rate in all catholic schools at least in the Nashville diocese and I suspect in the Knoxville diocese as well. The non-catholic rate is substanially higher then the catholic rate. This is due to most catholic students individual parishes contributing a set amount for each student that comes from that parish that is a contributing member of the parish and has a parish card. If a student's parents are not a contributing member of a parish, that student pays a rate approx twelve hundred dollars a year more. It doesn't matter what faith you are, it still costs just as much to educate a child. In the last eight or so years that I have been associated with private schools, I have seen many good students both athletes and non-athletes have to leave due to not being able to afford the cost of private school education.
  5. glad to hear they still offer financial aid. Here's to a great and healthly season in all sports for Knox Catholic and all the schools.
  6. Private school have the choice to offer financial aid based on income if they so choose or not. Father Ryan offers financial aid to anybody that qualifies for it, playing sports has nothing at all to do with it. Apparently Knox Catholic has chosen to not offer financial aid. You can call it a scholarship, but it is not based on grades, I can tell you from personal experience, its just to help the not so rich parents of students wishing to attend school there. Many students could not attend at all without this assistence. I hope this answer helps.
  7. My contacts see him throw the ball every day. As to your defense, I agree it should be better, it has nowhere to go but up. But what about that team from Knoxville? Are they still playing? As to the defensive secondary they are going to need a lot of speed to stop those lumbering running backs busting through the line. Anyway it should be interesting, here's to an injury free season for the Knights and all teams.
  8. I wanted to inform anyone in case they might be interested that the Division II 13 and under National Championship in AAU girls basketball is being played in Nashville. There are a full slate of games both Saturday and Sunday. I am not sure where the games are being played. There should be some good basketball to watch. That would be Saturday the 17th of July and Sunday the 18th. There are probably games going on the whole week, just don't have any schedule.
  9. I think I detect a little emotion here. This team will struggle to be as good as last year's squad. Some of my close Knight contacts tell me the quarterback search will still be going into the start of the season. Certainly need to shore up the defense, last year on several occasions, it was who could score last.
  10. Too close to call on the Ryan Game, the MBA game, MBA by 21.
  11. Ha Ha Ho Ho Hee Hee, Need a QB, I believe. Did that team in Knoxville stop playing football?
  12. Hillsboro is not a good example, a recent poll of graduation rates had them just over 50% unless I read the paper wrong, not too good. As to public vs private schools, all of the posts on this thread have a kernal of truth to them, none of the posts have the absolute truth. All the money in the world will not solve the school problem, public or private. Its gonna take the parents getting back in the job of raising their children, not leaving it to private or public school to do it for them, this is the one and only solution. Get involved in a big way and any school, public or private will start to improve, show the kids that their education is number one on your priority list and the sun will shine again on all schools.
  13. Great Job Lady Irish. From the first regional game to the final state tournament game, you never blinked. Special congrats to all the seniors, I am so happy to see all of you go out state champions. Thanks for the memories.
  14. Ryan wins 2-0 vs Baylor, JPII loses 10-4 to GPS.
  15. Father Ryan and Baylor 0-0 at bottom of fourth inning.
  16. Father Ryan loses two pitchers to graduation this current year. But the Irish train keeps rolling, two pitchers have transferred or in one case will transfer at the beginning of next school year. They will both be juniors next season and both ready to roll next spring. One is already throwing at the State Tournament and won the title game. So the Irish will continue I'M afraid be a thorn in JPII's side for the next several years. OH Yeah, I guess being close is a matter of opinion, but when you score six runs to the other teams one run in two games, that ain't too close, but I admire your eternal optimism.
  17. I was wondering what you mean by most of the parents. Are you referring to any certain teams or what? No need to reply, I teach my child sportsmanship, not her teaching me, thats my job as a parent. I believe most of the parents are good sports, all said and done. And many of the girls on many of the teams in the State Tournament know and respect each other, some have gone to school with each other during their early years. I am very impressed with all the teams. They all have a common goal, to try and do their best.
  18. Baylor, GPS, Father Ryan, St Benedict, I am somewhat confused as to Red Baron's comment that JPII can keep up with the Lady Irish. They have never beaten the Lady Irish ever in softball. Perhaps the team buses could have a race. Should be Ryan vs St Benedict in the finals. Should be a great tourney to watch. Hope the weather is decent.
  19. JPII beat Davidson Academy, by a score of 2-1. I believe that is correct. They have to play the Irish today. Prediction Irish 5-1.
  20. How is Goodpasture expected to do this season. Is that powerful hitter that would be a sophomore this year still there? I recall her being able to knock the fire out of the ball. Anyone Know?
  21. If Brentwood Academy gets by Knoxville Webb--(Post does not get into foul trouble), then Brentwood Academy should prevail by less than ten. Briarcrest should beat Girls Prep again less than ten. In the finals, I will predict that Memphis Briarcrest wins the title in a very close game.
  22. The irish have an additional arm on the mound to go with the fine pitching from last season. The irish will be tough this season. GO IRISH
  23. Girls Prep by about eight or so.
  24. Watch out for the lady irish. they will have seven or eight seniors that know how to play, also some very good juniors. They won nineteen games this year, look for that to improve next season. Go Irish.
