  1. I am sorry that Coach Slatten will not be coaching at White County next year. I think he did a great job with the talent level he had. He did a great job of coaching the talent up. In most games the boys were competitive even though they did not match up in talent with their opposition. They beat Oakland and carried Riverdale to overtime. They had the ball with the scored tied in the last seconds against Lebanon when an errant pass allowed Lebanon to intercept and score as the clock expired. When he came back to Sparta after Coach Whited retired, he was not the choice of the players or most of the parents of the players. I think that many did not want him to be successful. With the talent level improving I think Bruce would have had the boys in the fight for the district title in the next couple of years. I would have liked to see what he could have done with this years freshman class and the two classes behind that class. The talent level is fairly high in those three classes . However I think that he made a few mistakes in the way he handled a some things. The players did not seem to enjoy playing for him for whatever reason. In retrospect I think he would probably acknowledge that he might do a few things differently. It appears to me that Coach Slatten really cares for his players. I think he loves coaching and basketball as much as anybody can. I just wish that he had a chance to show what he could do with good talent.
  2. Hannah, as a fan I would like to encourage you to play. I hope you can work out your problems and feel good about playing for the Warriorettes next year. Hannah, you have been blessed with a lot of natural talent. You have the ability to create you own shot which is something the Warriorettes really need. If you love truly love the game I believe you will have regrets if you fail to return to the team. Whatever you do good luck to you and be sure you are comfortable with your decision. 3. I have now found a story on the internet from the Roanoke Times which stated that the family only lived in the Cookeville area for about the first two years of his life when they moved to Va.then PA.and then back to Va. So much for interesting rumors. I will have let my source of info for this rumor know he was wrong.
  4. The Duke bio on J.J.Redick mentions he was born in Cookeville. I heard he lived in Jackson Co. until he was 14 and that he was home schooled. What is the story? Did his family live in Jackson Co.?
  5. White County would probably be in same position. Would AA have as much if not more prestige than AAA if this happenned? Think about an AA region with Lawrence Co., Shelbyville, White Co.,Livingston, Jackson Co. Upperman and others. Could it be any tougher?
  6. Actually Columbia only beat White County twice in 1999. Columbia won in the region finals and then won in the sectional finals in overtime. That was the year of the different format when both teams in the sectional finals advanced. That game was for seeding purposes. White County then beat Columbia by about 8 points in the AAA finals.
  7. I am a Sparta resident at the game as as a high school basketball fan. I agree that last call should not have been made. It seems the ref wanted to get a early start for home. That said I do believe Portland would have won in overtime with Ledbetter on the bench for York. It was a great game for a fan to watch--nip and tuck all the way.It was tied at the end of the first and second qtrs. 2 pt lead for York at end of 3rd qtr and back and forth during the 4th qtr. Good fan support for both teams. I would like to see both teams at Murfreesboro.
  8. It was suggested below to get off I-40 and take US 70 to Sparta. DO Not Take Hwy 70. There is road construction from Smithville all the way to the Dekalb County- Wilson County line. I40 to Hwy 111 is your best bet. Hwy 111 is a 4 lane interstate quality highway. [Edited by drdefense on 3-3-03 2:53P]
  9. What did Lawrence Countians think of the National Anthem as sung by asst. principal Jerry Lowery's wife Tracy? Quite inspiring-wasn't it?
  10. I am from Sparta and I was at the game. I had not seen the officials that called the game all year so I do not know where they were from. Appeared to be a well called game to me. Obviously we all see calls we think should go the other way during a game but nothing out of the ordinary. I was appalled at the behavior of the person who was pointed out to be the LCHS principal who I understand is married to a Sparta girl. He was screaming at the officials unmercifully. I thought he was setting a terrible example for his students. I hope this behavior is an aberration and not his standard course of conduct at ballgames. Other than that one observation I thought was a great game to watch with good fan support from both teams. Lawrence County had a good crowd in attendance in spite of the fact it takes like what seems to be two days to travel between Sparta and Lawrenceburg. Good luck to LCHS in the region. Hope you can beat those Eaglettes.

  12. I feel compelled to write something about Lindsay for those of you who did not know her. Lindsay played basketball at White Co.when there was an abundance of talent. She did not start even in her senior year. Yet she was a vital contributor to teams that went to the state in both her junior and senior years. She was a tenacious defender who had great anticipation on defense. I remember a region game against Lawrence Co.when it seemed as if she had at least a dozen steals. Even when she did not get to play as much as she thought she should she would be quietly disappointed. She would not make waves as she was a team person. Even though she was not a starter in high school she got the opportunity to go to Roane State where she played two years before going on to Ala.-Huntsville where she played two years. I believe she was her team's captain her senior year. After graduation she stayed as a grad. asst. and she was named asst. girls coach this year. Not too bad for a girl who did not start for her high school team. Lindsay had a quiet determination to succeed even though she was not the most athletic player. Not to suggest that she was not athletic but I simply mean she got the most out of her athletic ability as anybody I can remember. I watched Lindsay grow up as I have a daughter the same age. She brought much joy to her family. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and family.
