  1. That was mostly a little kidding from a friend of the band boosters - actually the show is now announced - "Nightmare Before Christmas" is the theme. Why can't defensive back Bather be the backup qb???? Was he not a qb in 7th or 8th grade at Rock Springs? I think he was. Protection for a-rod will be beyond important. (but if there is somebody outside the current backup qb's who can get it done in a pinch - coach should consider it) btw, why did Tillery not play?
  2. Good luck tonight and avoid injury if you can. I will check the forum on Monday to see how you guys did. Don't let there be too much "LAUNDRY - ON - THE FIELD!!!"
  3. quote from the article: “What stood out immediately was his passion for game of football,” Hillwood Principal Karl Lang said. “I love his energy level. I got excited just listening to him. He’s not an in-the-box thinker. I think he’ll utilize the talents here once he recognizes what we have.” ********************************************************* He's probably a good guy for the job. (it sounds like) People will find something to b*tch about regarding the hire. (on the other hand, when was the last time you heard "we probably hired the wrong guy, he's totally boring and apathetic, the kids and parents should be very discouraged about the hire" - all you can do is buy into the spin and hope it's right} If they get 3 wins, that's better than last year. They just need something to build/rebuild on.
  4. GREAT POST!!! Good job metroman!! Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness - something all of us could do better at - me included along with millions of others.
  5. quote: "Yes, they cause serious problems (how do you define serious problem?). Zer-Tolerance...........you define" ************************ examples dirctly from Rutherford County schools: "The Board has been requested to review the xxxx, 2006 decision of the Disciplinary Hearing Authority (DHA) to uphold the expulsion of a student from xxxxx Middle School. The student was expelled for one calendaryear under the Board’s zero tolerance policy for having possession of a dangerous weapon on school . or The Board has been requested to review the xxxxx , 2006 decision of the Disciplinary Hearing Authority (DHA) to uphold the expulsion of a student from xxxx Alternative School. The student was expelled from xxxx Alternative School for chronic disruptive behavior and disrespect of authority. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THAT is zero toerance policy in action. It's as strict as it's going to get. If you hope for anything more strict, you're in for a disappointment. One big reason kids don't have their "crap" together is parent(s) who don't have their "crap" together...not 100% of the time, but much of the time. Parents should have to answer for why Johnny brought a gun/knife/bag of pot/bottle of liquor/pills to school and/or is just a jerk/brat kid that disrupts. Society can blame it video games, South Park, not a repressive enough dress code, whatever scapegoat they like - but I can tell you firsthand - I have 2 kids that have both been on the honor roll every grading period for years and years (the one at LHS has a 3.9 in all-honors) and they both play video games, watch South Park and Family Guy, wear rock band and "skateboard" type clothes, etc. Why are they good students? I give them the ultimatum. Do good in school OR ELSE. And the "or else" of being grounded from their fun stuff, having the cable t.v. shut off, not going to Florida on vacation, is plenty for them to know what they need to do. Besides, the obvious reason that they don't want to grow into being a stupid uneducated adult which is what the "crapheads" will be..."craphead" kids eventually become "craphead" adults which is why they can't build prisons fast enough. It starts at home. Obviously. But repressive dress codes, etc. are not the answer. Just my opinion anyway. Sorry to turn this Hillwood coaching thread into a socio-political parenting rant, but since I am a Hillwood grad who grew up in west Nashville but now lives in/has kids in/ Rutherford County...it seemed like the time to say something.
  6. You lost me there. Which kids exactly are those? The ones who slack off and disrupt and cause trouble? Isn't there a "zero tolerance" thing in effect for serious offenders. In metro and everywhere else? No exceptions. Example: a kids screws up bad in Lavergne or Smyrna. He gets expelled and sent Smyrna West Alternative School and can no longer disrupt at <name of 1st school here> or are you saying a <example> straight-A student/plays in band or sports/president of FCCLA/etc. is a "craphead" if they oppose having the same dress code as Ezell-Harding? You really lost me on that "craphead" thing or was that just an attempt at being un-P C (nothing wrong with that, I support free speech, even when possible misguided)
  7. Yes!! However if you are talking about the dress code at Rock Springs Middle, there have been issues about it not being enforced fairly or "uniformly" <excuse the play on words>. At least a few years ago that was the case. They may be doing a better job with that now. It wouldn't be a surprise after a number of parents of "straight-A" students had an issue with how it was being questionably enforced.
  8. quote: never coached white kids or black kids, I just coached football players ********************************************************** Thank you. Thugs come in all shades and nationalities. (unfortunate fact) Some of the kids you see at the food court trying to look "gansta" are on the honor roll at school - just trying to emulate what they saw on MTV. As the people who live near Hillwood have aged and no longer have high school age kids (same with West Meade area closer to West Meade Elem. school), actually many of those people now have kids that are between age 30 and 50, and the parents more likely to have kids age 14 to 17 are farther out toward Bellvue, Pegram, Pasquo, etc - the idea somebody threw out there about Hillwood becoming a magnet school and having a new h.s. close to where the h.s. age kids actually are make more sense. When they buiilt the "new" Bellevue H.S. in the mid-70's across from the old one that looked like the school in the "Hoosiers" movie - I never would have dreamed that it would be turned into a middle school within a few short years. If the old "Hoosiers" building was deemed too old and bad off to keep as the middle school, they could have BUILT A NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL out there instead of the penny-pinching solution they came up with. I didn't understand at the time why the Bellevue parents were soooooo upset. After all, Hillwood was still a pretty good school. Now that I have gone through a re-zoning controversy in my new area of residence (north Rutherford County) - I understand totally what they were upset about. They were right after all.
  9. o.k. - let's forget sports for the moment. Hard to do on a sports forum, but I am willing to give it a try. How are they doing at Hillwood on academics? After all, that is why the school was built. Are the kids who want a decent background for college getting it? Are they prepared correctly for the s.a.t. and a.c.t.? For college level work? Honors and/or a.p. classes? Forget the kids who are biding time and don't care. Just looking at the serious students (they do still have some, I hope) - are the opportunities available to learn what needs to be learned? If the football team goes 0-11 next year and they are barely able to field a band, that would be unfortunate. However, if a decent education can't be had, that is something you could not forgive. Not all schools are going to have a football program like Riverdale and a band like Columbia Central. Putting the cynical stuff aside - what about the academics? (contrast and compare with other metro schools, Williamson, Rutherford, Sumner, etc,,,but nobody expects it to be USN or Webb, so no need to even make those types of comparisons)
  10. Friday the 12th!?!?!? Band banquet for LHS is then. Oh well. Do a post letting us know how it looked. (football team of course, not the banquet) can you? thanks
  11. Fall before last they had the huge winning streak, when Hillsboro played there the line to buy a ticket stretched all the way out to the street. Why is everybody so ready to throw in the towel? Yes, they lose lots of good athletes to private school, but so what? They went to 2 straight basketball sub-states once at a time when the leading scorers at MBA, USN and BGA were all guys zoned for Hillwood (and in the case of BGA, the guy <Fesmire> lived ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE SCHOOL!!!) Nobody threw in the towel. There must be somebody that can jump-start some enthusiasm for extra-carricular activities over there. It would be nice to see the band get back to a decent number of kids again also, but several other metro schools have a skeleton of a band anymore - Hillwood isn't alone on that.
  12. can aau teams play yboa tourneys and vice-a-versa???
  13. Hey, a bit off the subject - does LHS have an "open gym" night for the locals to stop by and shoot hoops (like smyrna h.s. does on wednesdays??)
  14. oh yeh, top qb and wr in middle tn? A-rod and Golden (wilks is really good but watch out for worthington at rhs...I hear he won the region in the 400meters at 51.5 sec. - that's moving on fellas)
  15. Riverdale and Wilson Central will both find out payback is a b*tch this year. LHS and shs will be the top 2 without question. I stick to my original prediction: LHS over shs in a close one week zero. Neither team will go undefeated in the regular season.
  16. quote: What we need to teach these boys and girls is reality. Count how many people from Tennessee are in the NBA or WNBA. Now, how many fingers did it take. Its all right to dream, but as adults, we need to deal with reality. *********************************************** Thank you. About 3% of kids who play h.s. get to play a varsity sport on any level in college, I've seen. A few of those play as pros. Very few. More emphasis on academics in needed. More respect for colleges such as Vanderbilt who recruit qualified student/athletes instead of contempt for academics might be a nice start.
  17. is the scrimmage for 18th vs Dickson County still on at LHS?
  18. drop me an email and I'll at least give you my (non=public) 2cent worth of opinion go to www.leaguelineup.com/nrgrizzlies there is an email link on the left (spinning mailbox thing)
  19. West High Blue jays? Before becoming a middle school around the time Litton did?
  20. Hillwood, Hillsboro, Overton, Cohn, North, Pearl, East, Stratford, Maplewood, Madison, Dupont, Glencliff, several others I think they had better basketball coaching than football. Just my .02
  21. Bryant would be a good TE or DE because of how tall he is. No?
  22. He plays for the University of Arizona http://web.cfa.arizona.edu/story.php?id=437&time=1631 Tuba
  23. Orange and BLUE of the 'gators!! (he can become an Urban legend)
  24. see the correction in my post... it was 07yonug... p.s. - what the heck is a "yonug" - it doesn't rhyme with "thuggin" is it something out of a rap song? {example: "yo! I got a nug! - now I'm a yo-nug, dig!"}
