  1. You are right '04...sandbagging is the norm. Other than South, I can name North and Elizabethton from years gone by that laid it out for everyone to see. I have a suggestion for upping the interest and excitment of the Jamboree. Pit one region against the other and make it in two nights. Or maybe three nights with the special events on the first night. Oh yeah, talk about gate! What do you think Crawdad? What about it Volman, is that a little over the top? Oh well, time for Jack to pop out of the box...
  2. I view it as a taste...taste of the Tri-Cities if you will. And I believe all Coaches should give a good effort...not the sandbagging that the Vikings did each year. The fans want to see a sampling of the best you've got and after all it's the fans that make it Friday Nights. If there were no fans the boys would play a bit different I believe. I understand needing to avoid early injuries. Yes, what a waste that is to be injured in the Jamboree. But a few coaches play the Jamboree no different than a game and South has been one of those schools that does this. Many people on the T actually lambast South for going no holds-barred in the Jamboree. I commend the South coaches for a fine display of talent to give the fans a sampling of things to come. I mean, do it right or don't do it at all. Hold it close to the vest...it's just BS. Play the game...and play it hard.
  3. And so goes the Dobyns Bennett attitude Batman. I remember it well. I, and many others, felt the disregard displayed by Graham Clark and his disrespectful lot. I say you should have stayed home. Better yet, leave the conference and go back to the Big East. Oh, but you can't do that can you. No but instead you will make sure everyone knows how discusted you are with your situation. That's the problem with you DB people...you have no honor. It's all about you and yours...never to consider the larger picture. I for one thoroughly enjoy each and every quarter of the Jamboree and feel it is a great way to begin the season by giving the fans a tidbit of things to come. In all of it's intended hoopla. And especially the hype. Hey, let's have the jamboree at J. Fred...would that make you happy? Would you wear your practice jerseys then? Incredible. Your post is a classic example of why DB is hated so badly. You are a good person Batman and your boys good young men and I enjoy your presence here but I'm sorry I just could not let this go. It is a bad attitude to have. Yes, not all enjoy the Jamboree...Greg Stubbs comes to mind...to endure it with malice is one thing but to publically show disregard by what Clark did? I lost all respect for him that night. And '04, I heard the Jamboree was to be held at Science Hill.
  4. At least it would be an instant classic.
  5. That's OK guys. It's all good. Because when it's all said and done...we still write your paychecks.
  6. Aaahh, nobody wants to talk politics. They just want to see a few good fights before the preseason begins. They want to hear someone say how South will win it all this year so they can hear Jack reiterate...44-0.
  7. Well, FB, I don't take this as a personal vendetta by the City to tame the Rebels and take away their heritage and destroy the Rebel flag and what it signifies to Southers. And I don't think that in the long run that all of this will be bad for The Heights. But that is how most Southers feel. Not many in the Heights can see the benefit from all this. The GrandFathers of the Heights can confidently say..."I told you so". Because incorporation was the political platform of the late 70's and most people of the Heights were scared of the direction that would have dictated. In retrospect, it was our fatal mistake. The bulk of South's talent comes from the Rock Springs and the Miller Perry district. But, as well, some of South's most prolific athletes have come from the Sullivan West district. Stacy Carter and Bradley Davenport come to mind. So, yes, South will be split up. Central will get a piece and Sullivan West will retain 75% of their composition...and of course the City will get their share. No doubt South's competitiveness will be affected. The City will argue that most new construction and expansion within the city limits will be within the South district in the very near future. I know people that disagree with that. I'm inclined to see that as an inevitability. How I view it personally is that in 1976 I was 20 years old and an advocate of incorporation. What did I know? And of course, now we know that it would have been the best business decision the people in the Heights could have made. The rest will play out.
  8. South is about 70 students away from 4A. And probably about 350 away from 3A. You could be right Jack. But it would seem pointess for the City to own a high school and run it at 1/3 capacity. But maybe the City expects the South side to grow dramatically in the next 5 years. What do you think?
  9. You're actually right. Central will benefit from South's undoing. I heard you're going to JC's version of Bonnaroo next week? Bannanaroo I think it's called. George Michaels, Elton John...you know the crew. I hope you had a good vacation. It's about time you get back in here. It looks like your boys are gearing up for another good run...what with your QB and all. I hope you do good! So you healed up good and all? Gettin' healthy? You got a job here you know. You can't just bail-out. Anyway, we don't need to jump right in it...we just "ease them pistols out...slow, like 'lasses in winta-time...so's I can count the hairs on your hand." Don't worry, I ani't gonna' jinx you like I did last year.
  10. Volman...hows the Raven? I'm probably behind the curve but I need to ask how Tyler Bunn is related to Dickie Bunn? And does he compare? And is he staying at Central?
  11. Mike Crowder Senior has the definitive answer to that one.
  12. Two words will turn Central around. Chas Seegar. If he was the head man no one would dream of going anywhere else. And Central would be a championship team within 3 years.
  13. And what position did you play? Left field obviously.
  14. I must say that I was not impressed with the young Hayworth last year against South..nor in any of the other games I saw. I saw 4 games. However we all are aware that there is much growth both physically and especially mentally by the Senior year over the Junior year. This video proves it. It is a highlight film for the young man. The ladder drill is and has been an advanced Taekwondo and Kung Fu drill for many moons. Much before "Sparq" and the Nike combine training made it a mainstay...can you say Bruce Lee. It is one of the icons of speed work. As well, the step ladder jump is also an advanced Taekwondo drill. For those of you that scoff at Martial Arts as a core training regimen Hayworth presents two examples of its core technique. Pretty impressive who his trainer is. It don't get any better than that. Best friends for life.
  15. Streching is to the body what reading is to the mind. It broadens the horizon. Streching produces elasticity which fosters dexterity which becomes a degree of agility which is the prerequisite to superior technique and graduates to a master of mobility. Once this is accomplished, the rest of the equation is becoming a student of the game and learning to apply knowledge and strength to the already mastered skill set. This is a 1, 2, 3 transition...in that order. Strength without mobility is stagnant. Mobility without knowledge is wasted effort. Knowledge with out mobility and strength is a spectator's view. First, the foundation must be laid. Then layers are applied to produce the finished product. It is a process...and it starts early. It has nothing to do with what sport it is applied to. It has to do with never backtracking but always going forward. So we have mobility, knowledge, and strength...what comes after that? Naturally, what is a product of all the above? Character, devotion, and respect which begets work ethic. And of course Godliness. They say this is the game that makes Men.
  16. The significance of the South/Enka game in week 0 is rather trivial...or is it? Jhilts is correct when he says that the Enka Jets are a bottom dweller historically. 8 or 9 miles outside the City of Asheville, Enka is in Buncombe County. There are 3 significant counties in Western NC. that would be, Swain, Haywood, And Buncombe counties. Why is that significant? If you must ask then you must not be a Volunteer fan. Heath Shuler was from Swain county. Jonathon Crompton was from Haywood county...actually that is where he graduated high school because he was actually from Buncombe county. He moved to Haywood county as an upperclassman to finish his high school career at Tuscola High School. Which is where Tyler Brosius hailed from in 2010 and is currently NC States (arguably) starting QB. Taylor McCurray, the Enka Jets rising senior QB is currently 500 yards away from Heath Shuler's career passing record in NC. The Asheville area in NC is considered, at least by the Piedmont and beyond, by all practical purposes...Hillbilly Country. Which is why the Volunteer orange and white is displayed moreso than the Wolfpack or the Tarheels colors...as it were. I40 runs through the middle of Haywood county and Haywood borders Cocke County and Swain county borders Sevier county. This is Volunteer country. It seems Coach Dooley is very interested in Enka's Taylor McCurray. No offer has been made yet but I understand personal visits have been made to Enka by the UT staff. Many regard this area as quarterback country and the University of Tennessee has a large footprint there. I don't expect anyone to venture to Ashville in week 0 other than the Rebel faithful but the game does pique some interest. At least for Volunteer fans.
  17. Enka's QB as a rising Senior already has 3000 yards career passing under his belt if I read correctly. South, for 2011 is no slouch. DB has the goods I understand. I don't see Greeneville doing much this year. Daniel Boone is a question mark as is Bristol. North has vetrans. But I understand it may be the Toppers year. Last year they supposedly had speed but obviously no work ethic. I understand that ship is turning around. Speed galore and work ethic abounds. I know...we'll see. I hope all on the DL get well.
  18. Pujo, we all have differing opinions but as long as we all can respect each other then it matters not if we are republican or democrat. The previous posts allude to wonderful points but you already understand the part about not taking away their childhood. You can't live where you live and not appreciate the outdoors so I would venture to say your 8th grader has seen bear, snake, and cat and most likely in their own back yard. My POB is 1705 Kingsport, TN 37662. Just label it something obvious. You can give me your contact info in that communication. Every time I get on the core training soapbox here on the T the thread quickly dies. So I did'nt want to ruin this thread with the same old sermon. However, since Troll has broken trumps I will shed a bit of light. My son was a Second Degree Black Belt by his 10th birthday. Then he started playing football. He was a golfer before that. He is now working on his Third Dan in Taekwondo. But he has studied Kung Fu, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Hapkido and has dabbled in MMA. Bruce Lee would take current MMA champions and break them like match sticks. IMO the Martial Arts are superior early developmental diciplines for any sport. And all acedemia. Especially football. You won't, however, find many people who will listen, agree, or otherwise deliberate the benefit of these diciplines in light of football training. Suffice to say, it teaches strict core dicipline and creates abilities the weight room will never see. Granted, the weight room has it's rightful place in the training regimen, but for bullet proof core training it is either Martial Arts, Dance or Gymnastics...period. Anyway, I don't want to turn this into a Bruce Lee thread because my motive was purely to gain a bit of new knowledge about the weight room from people who knew more than me. So I want to keep that dialogue open. And yes, my son was a RB.
  19. That would be great Pujo. You live in Gods country. I used to do some backpacking on the trail back in the day. Little Rock Knob near Hughes Gap is one of my favorites. What position do your boys play? Yes, I do have some tried and true opinions on training outside the gym. Curious to hear what you are looking for.
  20. A few of you agree with Bucksfan and me on the merits of a 3 day workout philosophy. Mykidsdad led the way with the practical reality of it all. Many of us and myself included, are speaking from a principle standpoint. Some are deliberating from a realistic standpoint. The fact is reality dictates how the training regimen is implemented in high school athletics. Therefore I am in complete agreement that a strength and training (group of) coach(es) is essential to the success of the program. Regular sideline staff members need someone else to manage the weight room and the off season regimen. Their daily regimen is overwhelming over a seasons duration. These guys don't get paid to work 14 hours a day but do so as a labor of love. So when it comes to off season training they might be inclined to see an oportunity to go home early once in a while. And deserve to. Besides, as a few have pointed out it is impossible for one or two coaches to manage an 80 member team in the weight room in a 3 day regimen. A strength and conditioning staff's responsibility would have to encompass other sports to justify it's existance but at least they would be on payroll. But the best way for these specialists to be successful is to provide off site training for hire with more specialized concepts...i.e., Martial Arts, dance, possibly gymnastics (these are the 3 superior core training regimens by the way), and in the long run sponsor camps and specialized summer regimens. A mouthful but we all know that the up and coming middle school athlete is in many paid programs in the off season and some all year long. Parents realize the shortcomings of government programs and routinely opt for premium fee based programs. The market is there waiting on the expertise. Am I looking for partners? Maybe...Ha! Food for thought.
  21. I mean, I think we all can agree that the actual weight should be decreased across the board and the concentration be put on form. It can be seen in so many lifts but is glaringly evident in curls...both types, dead lifts, and of course squats. If the trainer demanded clean form in place of maximum poundage it would create strength quicker and not alienate the weaker kids as much. Clean form in my view actually builds more strength because of pure isolation.
  22. Hey guys, good stuff. It's not about who's right or wrong because there really is no such thing but it is about knowledge. I agree that high school kids should not go below horizontal but in college it is essential. I also agree that the motion needs to be slowed down and form concentrated on. As well, I agree the most important aspect is not the amount of weight lifted or the number of reps but the quality of the workout and it's intended outcome. Squats are for one purpose...and that is explosion. So going down should be almost a negative and coming up an explosion. Football is all about explosion. Keep it coming!
  23. FB, most likely the final plan is already on paper. We are just waiting to find out. But, if you are on the outside looking in some things are common sense. Like the demise of the Legion Pool and the Civic Auditorium. And how old is GC? Does he have 10 years left of coaching? Will he become the AD? Who will be the next coach? I would say the answer to these questions and more are on paper. They are just waiting for the smoke to clear. Would DB be the most attractive job in the state? Who would vie for it? And how much more attractive would it be if it were the largest high school in the state? Who are the top 3 football coaches in TN? Would they be interested? And now include surrounding states. Can DB afford a plump three figure salary for a football coach? Kingsport City is gearing up for monumental growth in the next short few years...their current school system can't handle that sort of growth...yet. Will the South community be the victim of or the beneficiary of the City of Kingsport's long term plan? Will the City allow Sullivan South to become a City high school and ship overflow to it? Will DB be expanded to house 3000 students? And...would the City of Kingsport allow Sullivan South to become their equal? Maybe I should write a Friday Nite Lights type movie and call it..."The Model City".
  24. "04, Bibee was at MTSU in '08 when my son had a visit there. I think he was the Secondary coach. I wouldn't think he would be interested but...just a thought. That would motivate the Viking camp wouldn't it?!
