  1. Smelcer is a great guy and a great coach... I played for hime my senior year on the baseball team. I'm not sure why he left, but wherever he is i'm sure he is a positive contribution.
  2. Oneida and Coalfield aren't the only 2 teams in the region...
  3. I'll tell you all a call, or should I say lack of a call that really gets me fired up every time I think about it. Last friday night Greenback was playing Midway. Midway's QB was breaking down the field on his way to the endzone. Meanwhile, a Greenback defensive player was in hot pursuit while the QB was still in the back field. Greenback's player got the immortal crap knocked out of him from behind "CLIPPING"! He layed there in pain well after the play was over. Howerever, the flag was never thrown! Greenback's stands were in an uproar. My uncle and I just happened to be standing on the sidelines next to the endzone where the extrapoint was about to be attempted. My uncle began to yell at the ref screaming "TELL ME YOU DIDN'T SEE THAT CLIP"! The ref snickered a bit and jokingly repied "I am not going to say I didn't see it". My uncle became furious because the ref had just admitted that he saw the clip and didn't call it. Then my uncle asked him why he didn't throw the flag. He said that "I don't have a rocket arm". The clip happened all the way across the field. Just because it is on the other side of the field doesn't mean that you can't throw the flag! That was the most unproffesional ref I have ever seen. He should be banned from reffing. I know that the refs make mistakes, and that some plays are not going to get called, but this guy admitted it to us. He could have saved some integrity by at least saying that he didn't see it. I wouldn't even allow that man to ref a pee-wee game. -Pride-
  4. I'm not sure if you were mistaken or the scheldule is wrong or what, but I was under the impression that Greenback was hosting Coalfield... Greenback plays Coalfield at Greenback, Midway at Midway, and Oneida at Greenback.... Thats what the shcedule posted on Coach T says and anyway... Anyway I think if Greenback doens't commit any turnovers than I think it will be a good game.
  5. Yeah ole' Eddie V. still tells me stories about Greenback vs. Vonore. He told be about them carving a huge V in our field and we set cows to graze in their field. I heard about Vonore having a thing where the students bought an old broken down car and Painted Teddy Jonses's name on it and then beat the crap out of it. He also mentioned the fight that vonore and greenback got in that one year. Sounded pretty ugly. Our rivalry we had with Midway, in my opinion, was because we had an 11 year winning streak on them until my soph. year. Then we were just embarassed and a rivalry spawned from it. Oneida and Coalfield were always big games. As far as I can remember Greenback Oneida and Colafield have always consistently been the top 3 teams in region 2 1A. However, other teams made a good run here and there, but those 3 were usually the team to beat. I remember getting beat by midway and sunbright my soph. year. Many of the players from those teams were crying. tears of joy. It actually made me feel good knowing how much it meant to them to beat us.
  6. yeah, i heard that harriman has a pretty big boy an the d-line. I think that if greenback doesnt turn the ball over ANY! and they can keep harriman's speed under control then i think that this game may be very close. I dont like to predict a winner because i am partial, but I hope that greenback steps it up tonight and pulls out a win. I think if they can get a win tonight the tides may just turn for them and we may see greenback placing their bid for a playoff birth. I have a lot of faith in my boys. GO 'KEES! -Pride-
  7. well its game day... lets see which pf these teams is going to bring their A game to the table, and which one is gonna lose the goose egg from the w colomn.
  8. I dont know if you could say "any" coalfield team from the last 50 years... Not trying to say those teams weren't pretty good, but I don't recall ever losing to coalfield between 99-02
  9. by the way... i would have guessed that you were the middle linebacker for that '87 team, but im not sure.
  10. I respect your privacy. You going up to the game tomorrow? Me and big eddie v are gonna head up there to see if big #52 can show flares of his lineage... if you no what im sayin'. He's got some talent and some great size. I heard ed was a push over till his junior year then something just snapped and he became a wild man. I hope the same thing can be said about #52. -Pride-
  11. yeah, i figured that much... what pos. did u play mr. gfd?
  12. many of the greatest teams in history did not win the gold ball... the landers did beat us but that doesn't necessarily mean that they were a "better" team. look at the colts last year. look at usc last year. both of those teams had a better all around team than the teams they got beat by. not trying to stir up anything, just saying.
  13. i appreciate the compliment ro8432. when did you play? i played from 99-02 seasons what years were u with the nation gfd?
  14. i appreciate that pujo. Hearing that from somebody elses side really means a lot. I''ll never forget that game. We always tried to play as cleanly as possible. We stayed focused on plaing the game cause every player on the field was out there to play for the love of the game. We weren't into trash talking or tryong to hurt another player. We just wanted to win.
  15. I'm going to have to say that my team, the 02' greenback cherokees was "one of" the greatest teams of all time in 1A. We had the gunsliger Austin James who threw for nearly 3000 yards as a sophomore. We had a running back who is currently playing D2 ball up in kentuky. Then there was the receiving core; Josh Shelton, Trae Helton, Matt Ervin, and myself... (not trying to brag). We all had hands, speed, and a good head on our shoulders. There wasn't another team in 1A that had the depth in the secondary to do much with us. However, cloudland beat us that year in the 3rd round. They were also a team stacked with talent and had great coaching. I think if we had played them 10 times we would have won 5. I also went and watched them play boyd the next week after they beat us. We could have beat them... Not saying they werent also a good team cause im not trying to step on toes here. We averaged 42 points a game and our 1st string only played the second half in only 2 games. I think we had a great team and i think that people who played against us would say so too. -Pride-
  16. very well said my friend. I totally agree with you. trust me i see it first hand everyday. i have known most of these kids since they were five years old. i have even coached a few of them back when they were just in junior leagues. i know what they are capable of, and i am definitely not seeing it. that was the most valid post that i have read on here yet. from the way you are talking you seem like you are from greenback. these are a great group of kids. I can only think of one player that brings his heart to the table every game. There is a heart of a lion under his undersized frame. If the whole team played as I know they can play then I gurantee they would shock every person who has ever bad mouthed greenback. I appreciate your comment. Are you from greenback?
  17. Thanks to those who have responded about Union County. From what I can gather from the information that you all have given me "Union County shoots themselves in the foot and they have a young secondary". Greenback may be young and lack a ton of much needed experience. However, a great deal of other teams points have been generated via; interceptions, fumbles, and just about anything else that you could think of, they have done and it has costed them. Not saying that Loudon and Pitt were not better teams cause honestly, they were. More athletic tallent, more experience, bigger, faster, ect. I think if both teams come to play with their A games then I think that they both maybe evenly matched up in this one. Keep responding guys. I really want to see many more replies to this thread by Friday. Key players, injuries, anyother information you want to bring to the table would be great. I want to go up to Union County on friday night with a good idea of how this game will play out. In Greenback my brother who is their starting guard (So. #52 Pat Evans 6'3'' 250) has has told me that they have been practicing well all week. They have been working hard on fundamental "which is key. So if they keep it up I suspect that they will be ready on friday night. Let me hear back from you. -Pride-
  18. I don't know if you have looked at the roster lately but mitch tucker and cody burkett are not playing for the 'kees this year. Mitch would be the best player on the field for greenback, but for some reason he has lost interest in the game. It is a shame for all that tallent to go to waste. -Pride-
  19. Greenback is way down, and that is an understatment. My boys from greenback are in bad shape when it comes to experience. Throw in a new head coach to make matters worse, and all we are looking at is a rebuilding year. I'm not going to be ignorrant like some and say they will win. When they won't. However, I do expect them to come along way by the end of the season. They have played some tough teams so far. South Pitt beat them with execution and solid fundamental. Not to mention their speed. Loudon is a solid contender for whatever region there in, riding on the legs of UT commitment Josh Hawkins, and last but not least Sunbright is as good as I have seen then since 2001 when they went 10-0. I have faith in my boys that they can beat oakdale, and honestly... anything can happen when Greenback plays oneida, midway, and coalfield... Not saying my boys will win, but just saying don't ket 0-3 lead you on. Coalfied Harriman Oneida Sunbright Greenback Oakdale -Pride-
  20. skipy, who'd u play for, and when? I'm an old cherokee. You can't beat the atmosphere at Greenback! the trucks wrapped around the field and packed with screeming fans. The stands are not that big but there were people every where. I miss like you wouldn't believe. We played Cloudland 3rd round of the playoffs in 2002 my senior year, and I think there was something like 9,000 + in attendane. Thats pretty inpressive considering the population probaly doesnt' break 1000. The attendance is down this year but when greenback is playing a region game its packed, regardless.
  21. Well, similar scenario down in greenback. 3 seniors, a handfull of juniors, mostly sophomores and freshman. The line is the biggest I have ever seen them all the way around. Including my sophomore baby brother Patrick Evans. He's 15 6'3'' 250. At the beginning of the summer he was pushing 280. He hit it hard in the weight room as well as the running. Now he is just shoving people around like nothing. I believe He played well against Cosby in the preseason scrimmage. As a matter of fact I think Greenback one. Anyway, watch out for # 52 for us. He's making me proud. Here in the next few years Greenback and Cloudland will be seeing each other in the playoffs again. I'm sure of it. -Pride-
  22. I don't know pujo, South Pitt is up there in that mix, but I'd say it is to early to tell. I don't know if you remember me, but me and my buddy came up there and sat with you all at the cloudland/boyd game in 02 after yall beat us (Greenback). Now I'm just a spectator. What has happened to cloudland this year? are they rebuilding? Greenback sure is. They've got coach kilpatrick (the o-coordinator when I played) as the head coach now. He is trying to pass the ball like we did when I played, but they are to young and lack the speed for that. I got to see the cloudland/coalfield game last season. That one went down to the wire. I'm sure that next season cloudland and greenback will be playing some good ball again. How did cosby get good this year? Fluke? have a good group of seniors? or ar they just trying to kick the landers while they are down? I know this cosby guy wouldn't be talkin this kind of smack if players like byrd and birchfield were still around. By the way what are those to guys doing these days? do ya know? I'd hope that they are doing well. Those guys are 2 of the best athletes I have ever played against. -Pride-
  23. I'm not quite sure how to respond to that. I mean, I don't know much about union, but since I never hear anything about them i'm guessing that they are probably not to spectacular. Greenback is having a rebuilding year as well as making coaching changes. What is union county's excuse? -Pride-
  24. I was wondering if anyone had any information about Union County? What do they have? What's their record? Who have they played? Any standout athletes? I plan on traveling up their Friday night and I want a good idea about how the game might turn out. -Pride-
  25. Well, this was the first greenback game that I was able to attend in quite some time. I missed all of last year due to work. I finally got my schedule the way I want it. The night did not go the way that I expected it. All I have to say is that Greenback is having a rebuilding year right now, and we should see a lot of improvement here toward the end of the season. By next year they should be close to running on all cylinders again. They have a ton of potential, especially on the line. They have got 10 times the size that we had back in my day (2001-2002). They are really lacking in the speed department. The team has only got a handful of seniors, and with that kind of inexperience all the way around then when thay play teams like loudon and pitt. Then they just didn't have a prayer. For any players from greenback who read this I would like to add this; The season is not over yet, you guys lost 3 there are 7 more games in the regular season. That is plenty of time to make a try for the playoffs. From the way it sounded tonight midway might be down. Coalfield and oneida are probably both pretty solid, as well as Harriman. That doesn't mean that they can't be beat. The team that makes the least mistakes in a game is usually the team that is going to come out on top. So you guys should try to work on playing flawless football. Fumbles, interceptions, missed blocking assignments, arm tackling, and poor coverage in the deffensive back field can be fixed with practice and hard work. When you guys get out of school you should have only one thing on your mind, and that is preparing your body and mind for friday night. If you go out their and slack you are letting your coaches, your teammates, your community, and yourself down. In greenback we take football very seriously, and I'm ready to see greenback the way I left it. I know you can do it guys. I believe in you, your coaches belive in you, and so does the community. All you guys have to do is get it together, play like cherokees, and rock some heads! Go Cherokees. -Pride-
