  1. Who first called for the meeting? I heard about it here, on T and later through the drum beats- this was not an official SQHS meeting, although I applaud Mr Moser for allowing, arranging and being there. Summy already has his hands full, and I know we need better lights in the dressing room, but as an AD- there is not even electricity at the soccer field. There are no dressing rooms for visiting softball teams, no restrooms for the parents and fans of soccer or baseball. Let's climb one little hill at a time. Sunday, I was narrowly focused on what was coming out of the new Football Coaches mouth. The absense of Trammel or Perry Hull wasn't of any interest. This was not a meeting about them. This was a meeting about you, and me. In some ways, it doesn't concern me, I'm in the end stages of being a SQHS parent, but this is my community and my high school and besides I'm a sucker and a volunteer and I try to put my time and money where my mouth is, so I was there.
  2. I did not intend for that yellow smily thingy to get in my post. I am not so clever as I might appear. In summation, our outside facilities are cobbled together. There are no dressing rooms or bathroom facilities for Softball, Mens or Womens Soccer or baseball. Water for the fields is haphazard and as was adroitly pointed out in an earlier post, hows about someone getting a little round up and a weedeater? Besides Me, I mean.
  3. If I were King for a day, I would implement two directives; one simple and inexpensive, one a bit more complicated. (a) Uniform the uniforms. I agree with the earlier post go back to original colors and use exact color numbers for all sports on uniforms, warm ups, fashion accesories, tshirts, caps, car logos, everything. This is not difficult. Also, simplify the logo, there are 27 Chief heads, 41 tomahawks and about a hundred spear designs. Present a united front, reach out to the community (Walgreens, Walmart, everyone that sells Chiefs apparel) and share the vision. Put it out, share it, use it. ( Hire a survey team and an architect for a day. Lay out the facilities using existing land as well as underutilized property; ie: the area south of the soccer field. Would it make more sense to put baseball and softball next to each other, and move soccer to the top where baseball is now? How about a football practice field south of the current soccer field, with a track and some lights? How about changing the fencing of facilities so entrances and exits can be can be better supervised? How about making that a goal?
  4. Ah yes, good humor, gentlemen, good humor. MLREB- there is no truth to what you heard. Boosters at Sequoyah are not evil marionettes, but are grown people, parents and grandparents of students that want a positive experience for their student athletes and are willing to volunteer their time, resources and energy to affect that end. As a result, they/WE (as I am a dues paying member of SQHS Boosters) feel that they have a stake in the game. In fact, we do have a stake in the school and it's extracurricular programs, even just as parents and property tax contributors. It is our school. This club has a brief history, a quarter as long as the school itself. The average attendence at the meeting is 20, with 5 of that being coaches. The club represents the interests of 4 or 5 of the schools sport teams. We would represent them all, but several of the varsity sports have no volunteers at the meeting. Viking ships were rowed by men facing backwards, trusting the captain and navigator. This was done to best utilize the power of the crew, but at the end of the voyage, if there was no plunder or if the crew felt that effort was entirely misspent, they VOTED whether to replace or support the captain. Occasionally this was a contentious process. So is this.
  5. As entertaining as this discourse has been, the constant "insider" references that the vast majority of us were not privy too has become, well, a bit tedious. I do want to thank you for keeping me from my work. Don't forget the band parents and the soccer moms. Don't forget the tutors, the boosters and the bus drivers. Don't forget that for more than 50% of the students; this is all the formal education they will have and for more than 95% Sequoyah will be all the formal sports, teamwork and experience like this they will have. I know it's your job, but it's their life. Let's make it worth the weight of their memory.
  6. As a passionate supporter of certain, er, "minor" sports at SQHS, Gentlemen- please remember; "A rising tide raises all boats." There are winning teams at Sequoyah. There are fans, good parents, volunteers and even a stray teacher or two that love the kids FIRST and their athletic endeavors along side or following. If we are positive, enthusiastic and selfless it will SHOW. Chiefs.

  10. I am not so clever as you, thanks for opening this forum. Some districts/ regions submit to the newspapers where they can be seen and some, like ours, you really never know. Because of competitive, we know lots of girls all over Tennessee and really like to know who get's named.
  11. Is there a place (here, perhaps?!) where all of the various All- Region, All- District and All Tournament teams can be amassed? In our little corner of the world it's an incredibly closly guarded secret, released only to coaches with no fanfare or warning. Last year, the CC coach would not respond to repeated requests for the list, I assume he has to release it somewhere; so I'm calling for anyone to post their own list, maybe the idea will catch on.
  12. I joined, just so I could put a picture up! Thanks for the reminder about supporting the cause.
  13. any chance the late matches will be postponed on 'accout of rain? Till tomorrow, I mean.
  14. D5- A/AA Monday 10/16 Boyd Buchanan 4- CSAS 2 Sequoyah 5- McMinn Cent- 0 Grace 11- Tellico Plains 0 Tues, 10/17 at Sweetwater HS 5:00pm- Sweetwater (#1 seed) v Sequoyah 7:00pm- Grace v Boyd Buchanan
  15. Hardball- In all fairness, sir (or ma'm) you are the reason we can't get ref's. Once a week, I work with a ref that has blocked and refuses to do particular schools because the coach keeps up a monologue instantly reviewing every call or non-call on the pitch. I absolutely agree, fill out an evaluation AFTER the match, mail it to the assigner or district chair and review. In exchange, sit down at best or at worst, coach your team and stop calling the match. If you have 11 strong willed, creative 14-17 yr olds that daily are witness to the disrespect shown referees by their own coach, then they adopt that attitude.
  16. Ok, help me out who plays who in district (and when)- probable outcome Sweetwater 5-0-1 Grace 4-1-1 Boyd- 4-2 Sequoyah 3-3 CSAS 2-4 McMinn Central 1-5 Tellico 0-6 anyone know or have an opinion?
  17. Becoming a referee is easy, Being a referee is hard. I refer to my earlier post, a cool head and experience makes a good referee. I miss fouls. I let a few minor ones go, my sense of what is "intentional" (hand ball for instance) is my own judgement in the split second. We hardly ever discuss what level of fouling is going to be allowed. There is no fine shading; all games are called according to the referee's experience and understanding of the rules. I don't call Tellico Plains v Greenback any different than Grace v McMinn Co; but if I called every foul in the Tellico example, the match would never end. Pay your $$, take the test and get your patch.
  18. Loudon has heart, but like a lot of teams, can beat the ones they should, and not beat the ones they should'nt. Don't know Stone Mountain, but Sequoyah/ yea, they deserved to win, Seq shot like 17 to 5 but couldn't hit the goal and Tellico only has 11 total girls and one freshman with some training. Good luck.
  19. I realize (as you prolly do) I am playing the devil's advocate on a rainy day- we are of like mind; but the idea that TSSAA can impose a standard of experience on a HS athlete that is not directly related to the rules that govern all high school athletics everywhere - I don't know how it would pass muster. I know that my daughter's team is all 90's. In fact, only if you had 6 or more girls in the same class on the same HS and Competitive team would a rule like this have any "impact" (pun intended). Perhaps that is wide spread, I don't know. In any case, I'll sign up- the last thing I would like to see is a group of busy bodies telling others what they can or can't do. We already have a Federal Government for that.
  20. My only other 2 cents; my child plays on a Knoxville D1 club team with girls from half a dozen high schools and that has been a great experience for her- meeting like minded kids from everywhere that have something in common that is not the small town and HS where we live. We drive 3x a week, over 40 miles 1 way to practice and have done this for yrs. Out in the hinterlands, what I run across is that small minds would rather you suffer than them improve. I'm no lawyer but how can TSSAA regulate what my 16 yr old does when not in school or on school property or field trip? Any Lawyer? Anyone? Beuler?
  21. I think (and therefore don't KNOW) that before you go to TSSAA you need to sell this to Tellico Plains, Sequoyah, McMinn Central, Rhea Co, Harriman, Wm Blount, Powell, I suppose the page could fill up. Big G- for most of the schools, this levels the playing field. It hurts a few, sure, but look at A/AA district 3. It might hurt the 3 schools that always go to district, but has no affect on the other 7. ( I really don't know about Hixon) Convince the volunteer coach at Tellico Plains with 11 girls and 1 with some training that this is a bad rule and everyone will go along.
  22. Good refereeing comes from a cool head, rules knowledge and experience!
  23. Along with the fact that most HS games are Tue and Thur, most refs have a home school; many have a son or daughter that play and block out games they want to watch. I can't speak for all ref's but I do not do it for the money, I do it for the game. Many nights I leave work early, drive 40 miles one way to make, well, not very much. But I've hung around Soccer a long time, don't care to coach, kids are grown and it's important. Two can hold down a match and ooccasionally are better than three because with a three man you end up with a center and two linesmen that call offside and touchline only leaving the lion's share of work to a single official.
