Friday night in Nashville Maurice Fitzgerald will without question have his toughest coaching job ever. This is said about a man who has been at the highest of highs (winning the state championship twice in '96 & '97) and what appeared to be the lowest of lows (like last year's forfeiting games due to playing an ineligable player). This Friday night at Pearl-Cohn High School promises to be filled with emotions.

Pearl-Cohn has started the 2005 season 2-1 (1-0 in Region 4-3A) and appears to be one of the front runners to claim that region title and host through the playoffs. They have the midstate's leading rusher in Bobby Council, who has already eclipsed the 500 yard rushing mark this year and has an 80 yard punt return for a TD. Their defense is allowing 2TD's per contest and they look to be a team that will be a force to play come November. This Friday night the Firebirds host Overton, who lost to open the season to Hillsboro then last week shut out Glencliff. The Bobcats are stingy on the defensive side of the football allowing just 6-points all year long. This game looks to be a matchup of the classic great rushing game (Pearl-Cohn) and the classic great defense (Overton). This is not a region contest so win or lose Pearl-Cohn is still in great position as far as winning the region title is concerned.

How do you all see this game coming out???? Will Fitzgerald get his team to play through all of the emotional drama that they are now faced with and play the game of their lives on Friday night???? Will this week's events overwhelm the Firebirds emotionally, thus causing them to get beat by a really solid 5A football team in Overton????

On another note, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the three young men who were involved in the automobile accident as well as the coaches, students, parents of the team, and the school faculty. You are all going through a harder time right now than anyone on here can imagine. This incident shows exactly football is just a game and that we should all realize that and live life to it's fullest everyday possible cause you never know when it could be over :thumb:

Good Luck come Friday night to everyone at Pearl-Cohn. If for some reason this game gets moved to Saturday then please let everyone know. I am sure many people on here would love to come and support the football team at PCHS!!!!

I'll take the Firebirds in what some might call an upset against 5A Overton. They'll have plenty of emotion on their side tonight and help from above as well.

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
