mustang101350
So how's the best way to convince administration, community, etc. that cheer coaches can pick their own squad - not outside people, students, etc. I mean does the baseball coach ask someone else to select his team? VolunteerGeneral
That`s a good question. Nevr really thought about it in those terms. Maybe it`s something the cheer coach should take to the administration.
JustWrestle
Check with some of the other schools around your area and see how they do it. I agree that the cheerleaders should be picked by the coach. If the student body picks them it can become a popularity or beauty contest, not one based on ability. Maybe you can present an alternative to your administration after checking with other schools to see how they do it. Good luck to you. fbfan51
I, along with the other varsity cheer coach, choose my own squad every year. I have 8 years of experience coaching and my AACCA certification. My defense to my administration is that when it comes time to go toe to toe with an angry parent after tryouts, I cannot defend the scores of judges who are ultimately strangers. I can, however, explain scores that I have given. How silly would it be to have tryouts in ANY OTHER SPORT whose coaches do not choose their own team? For less experienced cheer coaches/sponsors, I understand the need to bring in someone with expertise. For those who do know what they want on their squad, then you should absolutley choose your own team. I have chosen my own squad now for four of my eight years in coaching. I had an issue EVERY YEAR that I had outside judges come in. I have NEVER had a parent/child issue since I began choosing my own team. As you can tell, I feel very strongly about this ,and am happy to offer advice to anyone who is interested in doing this in the future!
