Independence vs. Glencliff

Recommended Posts

Two years ago, Independence began their football team with around 60 kids from the school's freshman and sophomore classes. This team was to play a JV schedule, but in the summer prior to the season, they scrimmaged three varsity level teams: Ezell Harding, Glencliff, and Stewart County.

The Glencliff scrimmage was easily the roughest of the three. 5 key Eagle players were sent to the ER and it was simply a disaster.

Glencliff, in turn, has always been a bit of a measuring stick for the IHS program. Last season, Independence lost 28-14 and 23-21 respectively in the Spring and Summer scrimmages.

While it can be said that Glencliff graduated some key players, Independence totally dominated them tonight. 42-7 (assuming TDs as 7 points) was the score and it wasn't even that close.

For the first time in a scrimmage setting, Independence looked like a varsity team. The offensive was crisp and very efficient.. The defense was swarming to the ball like Coach Eubanks has been preaching since day one. It was a very impressive victory for the program.

Additionally, Independence did all of this without several key components to their team. Starting receivers Chris Darnell and Isaac Baugh, Quarterback Emory Martin, and Lineman Josh Grigsby were all sidelined due to injuries, but all expect to be cleared by the early summer.

Something special is happening in Thompsons Station. The kids are buying into Coach Smith's system. One year of varsity mediocrity was enough for this close-knit group. The off-season workouts are going excellently. Kids are getting stronger while jokesters are realizing that this isn't the program for them.

Players are developing in unforseen ways. The receiving corps was very impressive tonight, displaying great hands and a little bit of post-catch ability. The secondary has seen the proverbial coming of age of several players.

Above all, the leadership is there. While excuses were not something Coach Smith would allow, the importance of seniors is clearly demonstrated by this one scrimmage alone. Although it was always recognized that a team with seniors had an innate advantage, Independence was never able to actual experience that.

While it isn't possible to judge a season based merely upon the spring scrimmage, it is possible to judge the attitude. There's a very positive, confident attitude permeating throughout the team.

This was a very big statement for the Eagles: they are not taking anything else lying down. They are here to win and compete with the top teams of region 6-5A.

A well respected coach said last week that Independence was very close to having a very good team. I forgot they have a series with Siegel. Could be interesting.

What is the outlook for IHS this week against Springfield? What does springfield run (O & D) and what problems do they potentially pose for the Eagles?

Sacdawgs:

Springfield runs an option attack from Spread, Dbl TE, and a power game.

Defensively, you will see an attacking 4-3. Apparently, the Middle Linebacker is a stud.

They are expecting a much tougher test in the Yellow Jackets of Springfield than what they saw against Glencliff.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
