hydration test

CoachDelgado - One more question if you don't mind. From my observation of wrestlers passing and failing the hydration test, it appears that the test is not only for hydration. I've seen several fail who weren't attempting to drop weight and were drinking excessive amounts of water several days leading up to the test. It appears that one's protein intake negatively impacts the test? Eat a steak or drink a protein shake the night before while drinking lots of water - fail the test. Eat only fruit and carbs the day before with the same amount of water - pass the test. Do you think there is anything to this?

I think you are on to something. Anecdotal rather than scientic, but 6 of 12 wrestlers in our group failed the hydration test. NONE of those who failed were attempting to cut any weight. Some ate breakfast a couple of hours before the test. All ate the heavy dinners you refered to ( steak or burger type food ) and none of them restricted fluid in any way or worked out prior to the test. It was almost a sight gag to watch the guys who were fully fed, with much more than an inch to pinch all fail the test , while the super lean guys who were watching food and drink prior to the test sailed on through. Go figure.

Some of the kids this morning failed hydration testing .They were all asking just how much water did they have to drink . Ialso noticed alot of them were treating it like a wiegh in before atournament .They need to treat as a hydration test then worry about there wieght . Now most of them will have to test monday ,and season starts teusday that cuts it close some may not get to wrestle tuesday.So all you young men grab a gallon milk jug fill it with water and don't pee this weekend.The more in the cup will make it easier to pass.

I'm with you. The problem is a practice test was given and several of the wrestlers who were not attempting to cut weight failed the hydration, including a heavy weight. I suppose many of us walk around every day not fully hydrated? The TSSAA site says "Digital fiberoptic refractometers shall be used to determine hydration" but one of those aren't laying around everywhere for an athlete to get a feel of the volume of water they require to be "hydrated".

 

The statement that many of us walk around every day not fully hydrated is a correct one. The average person should drink 80oz of water everyday and you should drink anextra 10oz glass for ever 25lbs that your overweight. That much water is just not something the average Teen is going to drink let alone the average adult. I can see how a person can fail a hydration test and not even know it. The average student does not have the ability(Time) to drink that much water in a days time at school.

 

At the International Sports Medicine Institute, where they work with Olympic and professional athletes from around the world, they have developed a formula for water intake that accommodates athletes and non-athletes alike. They suggest a daily water intake of 1/2 ounce per pound of body weight if you're a non-active person (that's 10 eight-ounce glasses a day if your weight is 160 pounds), and 2/3 ounce per pound if you're an active 160 pounds). This ISI formula, inspired by East Germany physicians, has been used with great success for almost two decades.

 

So if your are a 210 pounder and an athlete you should drink a gallon of water a day plus an extra 10oz glass

The idea of "don't pee this weekend" is why some are failing the test. Those that take the test in the morning and wait until they get to the test are concentrating their pee which in turn is read as dehydrated. Those testing in the afternoon and hold it a long time are doing the same thing. One should be in a constant cycle of drink-pee and should not resist the need to pee. The guideline of 1/2 ounce of water daily per pound of body weight is an good guideline to follow. One who is drinking this much will fall into a cycle of needing to pee all the time. This can problematic at school where restroom breaks are encouraged only between classes, but the student-athlete will just have to deal with it.

Coach thanks for the info you have bgeen helpful wiyh your information . I over heard one of the trainers suggest that the wrestlers go around lunch time then go at testing drinking plenty of water in between time . The way you explain it makes more sense Thank you for your help.
