Interesting article in today's commercial Appeal on prep football:

I was especially interested in the info on the Covington Chargers:

 

[ And then there are those like recently hired Covington coach Brian Beaubien, who's determined to change the run-first, run-it-again mentality that's been a staple of Charger football for years.

 

"It was kind of strange, the mentality," said Beaubien, 36, a former defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at three-time state-champion Nashville Donelson Christian Academy.

 

"On the first day (of conditioning), every kid goes to running back. There's like three kids that go to receiver. ... But, you know, they just hadn't been throwing it at all here, and nobody wanted to play receiver." ]

 

This is the change I have asked for over the last few years, to throw the football every game, so that when we get to the playoffs the QB and the receivers will be ready to pass when teams put 10 guys in the box to defend the run. I am already impressed with the new coach.

Yeah, i bet if you guys would have passed alot more you'd have been good. Oh wait, you were good. But I bet seriously you would have been one of the best teams in 3A if only you'd have thrown more, probably even gone to the state championship a couple of times. If only your last coach would have had the vision this guy has. A vision of ball flying through the air, lynn swann like catches, and a qb with a dan morino release. Yeap, I bet your guys get real good real quick now.

Covington has made a good living running the Wing T and Double Wing offense for many years. Three coaches did very well with it. In order to have a pass offense, you have to have a passer. Could Covington have developed a passer? Probably, but we will never know. Hoskins, last year's QB, was a good athlete, a good baseball player with a strong arm, but he couldn't throw the football in an ocean.

Dyersburg played Covington twice last season. Covington threw 20 passes (10 per game would not be far off the high school average.), completd 2 of those 20 for a total of 10 yards, with 4 interceptions.

Well, Hoskins' stats make you think of the Darryl Royal quote - "when you pass, three things can happen, and two of them are bad". What I'd like to see, though, is enough passing so that we are not in panic mode when somebody stops the run and we have to throw it. That has been the mode of operation for years. I still think that we will never win a State Championship at Covington by just running the ball.

 

State Championship games against Portland and Fulton and a semi-final game against David Lipscomb might all have turned out differently with a decent passing game.

      Shoulders dad graduated for TC, and Kyle began his coaching career early on at TC although he wasn't there long. Shoulders would be a homerun, but don't see him leaving Macon anytime soon.

      My kind sir, you seem to be lost within the time space continuum having traveled from the 16th Century or you aspire to hide your true intelligence by masking your language with that of the great playwright. You know good and well, your commentary takes your fellow comrades hours to decipher what you are really saying and most of them are likely left questioning whether you have insulted them or find them to be in your favor. I offer you some advice. In my travels through this area of the country, it is best to speak slow and with a twang and you don't annunciate  words to their fullest. Your points will be clear then!  Any names been mentioned around town as Actual Applicants to this job? Seen several post mentioning individuals, but I haven't heard of any of them except for Shoulders. Does he have ties to TC?  Have amy of the other names mentioned ever been in the HC position before?
