Athletic Period or Not

Last time I looked a college could give a scholarship for band, singing, or chorus. Athelete's get scholarships for playing sports. But there grades don't come from getting credit for a PE class that they don't even take.

Is a PE grade even figured into a kid's grades for college? I have heard that you have to go thru some search process to be qualified for a scholarship.

Band, chorus, and singing are not considered core classes either! Some scholarships (and colleges) look at only core classes (english, math, history, science) and some include all classes when looking a students GPA. Once again PE is an acedemic class that is required to graduate, just like a fine art (generally music or art). If you can take more than one fine art (remember only one is required) then why can't you take more than one PE. If your fine art can be specific (band) then your PE should be specific (football, basketball, etc.). I think it is unfair that we label athletes as bad students, last time I checked you have to be acedemically eligible for H.S. athletics but not for the band.

I believe it should be allowed as an elective for schools but not to replace wellness. State requirements mandate that all students pass the course life time wellness which is a combination of both health and physical education.

As elective for athletes I think that it is a great idea, it would cut down a lot of headaches for coaches and players who do have to stay late. There are many concerns about obesity in the state, so it is important to have wellness to teach about the lifetime pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. With the new requirement of 90 minutes of physical activity per week it is also a scenerio to help improve obesity in the youth (Which is a joke, the way it was written, but that's a whole other story.).

There shouldn't be less weight placed on PE courses than others and yes there is such a thing as homework in PE, teachers can't just sit there and roll out a ball anymore, there are to many things to be held accountable for anymore.

Of course this is coming from someone who was at one time a HS coach and PE teacher and is now at U of South Carolina getting a Ph.D. in Physical Education Pedagogy.

Just my opinion.

    • Groves got the ball over 20+ times. His son arguably played the best for East in that game. 3rd and long multiple times and he came up big to continue a couple drives. Please shut up for the 3rd year in a row
    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
