Chattanooga Teams

I did a quick count, may have been off a bit, and found 106 schools I would consider Nashville area or mid-state compared to 33 for Chattanooga/Chattanooga area. I had to go east to Cleveland and Athens and west to Grundy to get that 33. I counted schools I knew of or assumed to have softball teams. In Hamilton County you have 5 Class AAA schools-Red Bank, Soddy-Daisy, Central, Ooltewah and Brainerd, with Brainerd not very competitive. In AA you have East Ridge and Hixson (AAA to this year) and Arts and Sciences and Howard, neither that good. In A there's Boyd-Buchanan, Sale Creek, Grace, Chattanooga Christian, Lookout Valley and in Division II there's Baylor, GPS and Notre Dame. The big difference is that outside Nashville going each way you have strong teams such as Dickson and Hendersonville, some large suburban areas included, then go south into the rural areas past Murfreesboro and you still get quality teams. That may have something to do with the size of the schools though, there's Giles but most of those are larger schools with decent-sized towns like Coffee County, Columbia, Lincoln County that have put good programs together. Outside Hamilton County you have 4 Class AAA schools total and mostly have rural schools where softball hasn't gone as far as it should yet. That's something that needs to improve but as a whole it hasn't. Bradley had a good team this year late, Whitwell is usually strong and Sequatchie has been the last 4 years but over the long haul that's about it outside Hamilton County. I'd say there's no question there's many more top quality teams in the mid-state, but I'd say for the top few vs top few it's still pretty equal. A better comparison would be Hamilton County vs Davidson County, maybe not on titles each year (besides A) but head-to-head games in tournaments, appearances at the state and so on.

    • Did this happen? Does anyone know? Ripley has their HC job posted on the bulletin board over the weekend.
    • Coalfield definitely isn't the same team they've had the past few years. They are still the favorites to make it out of their region because of their pitching. They have 1 arm that sits low to mid 80s and 2 other arms that are mid to high 70s with good off speed stuff. If you can avoid their top 3 bats in their lineup then you have a shot to beat them. Their 4-9 hitters are average at best. Wartburg's ace was able to shut them down last week in the game Wartburg won 4-2.
    • It is the longest season. Plus, 30 games a year. No Christmas break. I would say basketball is the most time consuming.
    • No movement on Chester? South Gibson? Gibson County?
    • Winfree's senior year was the season she needed to secure more college interest. That opportunity was taken away from her. A lot of false assumptions can be made about what happened and what the options are. Unfortunately, the former coach and administration did not allow Winfree to have due process. A lawsuit was filed for a reason, and it will run its course by people who conduct discovery and take depositions. Unless the parties settle out of court, a lot of the pertinent issues will come to the public surface. I wrote about many of the issues here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/11/17/grounds-for-investigation-and-suspension/ I interviewed Winfree after she was dismissed from the team and wrote about it here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/12/01/a-new-interview-with-sable-winfree/ Winfree had been on teams in Warren County since the fourth grade and never been dismissed from a team. The real questions are why was Winfree dismissed from the team, and why the administration backed a coach whom they did not rehire.
