OM4Ever,

I have a SINCERE question for you (or any other Melrose fan):

What do you think is going to happen to Melrose's current Coach (Alexander) when the Golden Wildcats stumble (and I'm convinced that they won't get past the 2nd round) in this year's playoffs?

BTW, I am pulling for Melrose (and all other playoff-bound Memphis area schools) to win in all, in 4A.

As a Melrose grad who lived just across Southern street I enjoyed the great Melrose and East rivalry games. Many of us on both sides of the rivalry have close family members who played and still play for both schools. I have many friends played for East through the years. We used to get together before the games in recent years and really kick things off. Sadly i don"t see them anymore. The East fan base has severely fallen off in the last few years. The key is to ban together and put some serious pressure on the Principle. We had to do that at Melrose when we stumbled recently. Believe me, when fans ban together the administration will listen. There is nothing greater than a packed house with East and Melrose fans. Sadly, we have not seen the East fans in a while now.

I think that coach Alexander will end up at East High, the school that he graduated from, or he will go back to Dallas and work with the Cowboys or in one of his businesses. Hopefully we can make it to the title game, but, going into this year i was always under the impression that next year would be our year. Especially with all the young players that we have. Big ups to BTW. Whats up with basketball this year?

The Melrose vs East games that you recall are now a thing of the past!! I had the opportunity to call 3 of these games over a 5 year period when both teams were in their prime. The atmosphere was unbelievable!! The two schools got together and changed the games to Saturdays and what you found was this was usually the only game in town. What crowds!! One year at the Fairgrounds, the stadium was completely filled with an overflow onto the track and eventually onto the field. It became necessary for the police to string yellow crime scene tape around the end lines so that fans behing the goalposts would not spill onto the field. Fans would line the fence along Central Avenue, and peer from high above the hills immediately below Redbirds Stadium. Tailgaiting and partying was at a premium. Fans at both schools would enjoy parades, bands, dance teams, DJS and their music, and a favorite beverage!! Smoke would linger over the stadium from the barbequing and taunts and jeers from the various fans would reverberate throughout the stadium. Melrose would arrive with a police escort with the sirens wide open and their band would lead them into the stadium. What a spectacle and generally the ballgames were exciting and hard fought. When the game was played at the MOUND, fans and opponents would first hear the sound of the Melrose band leading the football team down Park Av. to the stands. Homeowners would stand on their front porches and cheer the team as they passed. NO...These days are over!! And what a pity...This type of school and fan rivalry made high school football exciting. Although Melrose continues to have a solid program, with East falling out of the competetive scene, fewer and fewer programs are able to step up and present the challenge that East and Trezevant used to bring! I have fond memories of those days and it is regrettable that a great tradition of the Saturday confrontation between the two schools is gone!

Heard some rumblings. Anyone hear anything "concrete?"

Understand the principal is trying to figure out a way to clean house again! The problem he's presented with is the fact that earlier, after firing the staff, and having to reinstate them (Board's instruction) is can he get away with cleaning house now that the seson is completed. My understanding is he is "weighing " his options and if there is any way possible, (and he is an individual that wants "his way") he will dump the coaching staff again. This is the word. My goodness, what a mess he has created!

Everybody in the Memphis city system knows why things are the way they are. Incompetence is rewarded with advancement and ineptitude is promoted to the board. Money is mismanaged by the hundreds of thousands and personal agendas are pushed in the work place by senior staff as if they were the 17 and 18 year olds we are there to teach. Some of these very same advanced degree educators can't speak in complete sentences much less write in one. So why are we shocked when we see coaches fired for no other reason then because I want to or dismissed with so little consideration that days later the board forces him to reinstate the coach and his staff. If you want to discover the real reason for the rot that has infested East high all you have to do is look at the top and the same holds true in the overall system that is Memphis City Schools.

Sad state of affairs! Unfortunately, I have to agree with you. Looks like the continutation of schools "on the list" and the proliferation of the private schools.

    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
