Oak Ridge went to State three years ago. Two years ago, they lost in the Region Semifinals to a Powell team that was smoking hot at the time and last year they lost in the first round of the Region to the eventual state champion, Maryville. Truth be known, they were a little bit unlucky. Stephens got sick during the district tournament and was a shell of himself. It probably cost Oak Ridge the district semis against Karns and the consolation game against Powell. Oak Ridge entered the district tourney as the one seed and finished fourth.

All in all, Ricky does an outstanding job over there. I have no doubt that they will be right in the mix this year to go to State.

Bearden, Maryville, and Oak Ridge are the legitimate teams with a chance to go to the Boro...others that could get hot include Powell, Farragut, William Blount and maybe a long shot from the Upper East...Greeneville, DB, Science Hill have already shown they are not their usual self......Out of the original three, there will be a very good team that will stay home.....

After one game:

Oak Ridge (1-0) Beat West by a very large margin

Powell (1-0) Struggled early against Campbell County, then won by 25

Clinton (1-0) Won at home in overtime over Central

Karns (1-0) Narrowly beat Halls.

Halls (0-1)

Campbell County (0-1)

Central (0-1)

West (0-1)

After one week of district action:

Oak Ridge (2-0) Beat West and Clinton by large margins. Stephens putting up gaudy numbers, Dowdell is the best true big man in the district.

Powell (2-0) Blew out CC and won a double OT thriller at Karns on a tip-in at the buzzer by Nick Gordon. Jason Seymore is playing lights out for Powell, he had 29 against Fulton and 35 against Karns.

Karns (1-1) Much better than expected. Several guys on that team have grown significantly. Tucker almost single-handedly beat Powell. Glasgow is a stud point guard. This team will definitely be a threat to advance in the Region Tournament.

Clinton (1-1) Getting blown out by Oak Ridge is no fun and look for Clinton to rebound. They play at Powell on Tuesday night, so maybe the rebound won't start so soon.

Campbell County (1-1) Much improved with all their players back who quit last year. Need a legitimate shooting threat to make up ground on the top four teams.

Central (1-1) Nice win against Halls for Coach Mercer.

Halls (0-2) They get Cooper back this week and immediately get a lot better. Guard play must improve.

West (0-2) Not looking very good for the Rebels this year.

Pretty much what I expected early on. O.R. and Powell will battle it out for the #1 spot Karns, Clinton, Halls, Central. and C.C. will fight for the 3-7 spots. West has the #8 spot wrapped up it appears. Central had a big win over Halls. I attended that game and was impressed with how well Central handled the game. Halls was the more talented team but Central was able to pull out the win. The first time in a long time I have been able to say that about the Bobcats. Cooper will make the Devils better inside but that will not help them with their weak guard play.

Have you seen Bearden and Maryville play? They may disagree with your assessment.

The paper says that Oak Ridge and Maryville play tonight. I reckon I might have to go and watch that one. /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />

My guess is that it had to do with grades. The way Clinton likes to play, well, you just can't do it with seven kids. Clinton hung close for a half and then just ran out of gas. It will be much closer next time, although Gordon did not play for Powell either with an injury.

After last night (Next game):

Oak Ridge 3-0 (at Karns)

Powell 3-0 (at Halls)

Karns 2-1

Clinton 1-2

Halls 1-2

Central 1-2

Campbell County 1-2

West 0-3

Oak Ridge- 66

Maryville- 62

Check the Oak Ridge v Maryville thread for individual stats.

From the players mouthes Chris Rowe was very sick and didnt come to school and wagner was suspened ... Matt Mott and Cj alred got into trouble with grades but the teachers they had said they brought them up but the AD would not let them play even though he would let them if it were football because i know from a few of them failing... no excuses about the grades and we got outplayed powell ran us and we tired out ... well played

Either way, Dowdell didn't play well against Maryville, and Oak Ridge was ahead by about 10 the entire game. Had Dowdell been hot, it would have been a 15 point game.

And poor grades are no excuse for losing. They know that they need to pass and that should be their first priority, in front of sports. Props to whoever didn't let them play

Peace,

    • One final thought. Coach Keith claims he was not aware of the player's failing grades. I won't comment on that, just to say this, IF he did not, whose job was it to see that this kid did not play ball at CHS? That person should be looking for a job and they might be, I don't know.
    • They have fired the principal, 2 teachers, at least 1 counsellor and 1 coach so far. I don't see it from my view in Oak Ridge as a coach thing, he  was just implicated in asking 1 teacher to  fix 1 kid's grades.   In our local media(Clinton and Oak Ridge)the principal is who is the originator and pusher of the fraud. The others are peripheral. The coach isn't even the big story, just here on a sports site.  The media view is the principal did it to cause CHS to be seen as excellent by the state. He committed fraud to do that so he might spend a little time in jail IF that is valid.
    • And from coach himself, he wasn’t told he was let go because of the ineligible player.    that’s just what the schools needed to happen to fit their bull
    • Wish it was made clear before a coach gets let go or not retained instead of being sold as the reason he was in trouble. I was told the kids who got grades changed, 97% or better were non athletes but the coach is taking all the heat so the schools can pretend it wasn’t their job to know. heck, what do you think could happen when you hire husband and wife as head principal and head guidance….   that’s not being said though…
    • Hmmmmm……doe dee doe doe.  Last time I came up there to watch my pirates one of those guys in that pickup trucks flattened the tires on the lawnmower.  This is payback.  You can bet the lawnmower on that.
