MLK Invitational in Memphis, TN: Monday, Nov. 24 to Friday, Nov. 28.

(x) = seed

Monday, Nov. 24

Millington (1) bye

1) Kirby (24) vs. Douglass (25)

2) Liberty (12) vs. City University (13)

3) Mitchell (5) vs. Craigmont (20)

4) Overton (8) vs. Hamilton (17)

5) Hillcrest (4) vs. Wooddale (21)

6) Melrose (9) vs. Fairley (16)

7) Manassas (2) vs. Sheffield (23)

8) Oakhaven (11) vs. Trezavant (14)

9) White Station (6) vs. Carver (19)

10) BTW (7) vs. Kingsbury (18)

11) East (3) vs. Raleigh-Egypt (22)

12) Ridgeway (10) vs. Whitehaven (15)

Tuesday, Nov. 25

Monday winner of game 1 plays Millington

Monday winner of game:

3 plays 4

5 plays 6

7 plays 8

9 plays 10

11 plays 12

This is what the schedule says: The semifinal games will be played on Thursday (Thanksgiving) at 6PM and 3PM at Melrose. Final is 6PM Friday at Melrose.

If seedings hold true, the semi-final games ought to be Hillcrest vs. Millington at 6 PM and Manassas vs. East at 3 PM. However, the seedings were made strictly on won-loss percentages and did not take into account level of competition (AAA vs. AA teams). White Station defeated Manassas last year by double digits and so they could be a threat to replace Manassas in that game. East looks like a pretty secure pick for the semi considering the teams they will face. On the other side of the bracket, I would not be surprised if either Melrose or Overton "upset" Hillcrest. Millington is pretty much a lock for making it to the semi on that side of the bracket.

The 25th annual South Central Bank Lady Invitational of the South basketball tournament field includes a Kentucky state tournament quarter-finalist, a Tennessee Class A state tournament runner-up, 10 teams that won 20 games last season, tradition powerhouse programs and up-and-coming players and teams representing high schools from Kentucky and Tennessee.

Ninth Region power Notre Dame appears in their first SCBLIS after reaching the finals of the Ninth Region tournament last March.

The 12:45 p.m. contest features the host school, Allen County-Scottsville pitted against Antioch (TN). ACS posted a 15-13 record last year. The ACS program is one of Kentucky??™s tradition-rich programs---having just passed the 600 mark on Kentucky??™s all-time wins list. Antioch was rebuilding last winter and their 6-17 worksheet is a testament to that fact. Antioch has a winning tradition, evident by their 30-7 record in 2007, the year in which Antioch reached the quarter-finals of the TSSAA 3-A state tournament.

Tipping at 2:15 will be Ohio County and George Rogers Clark. Ohio County was 28-5 last season, reaching the quarter-finals of the Houchens Industries/KHSAA state tournament. George Rogers Clark is up-and-coming, having posted a 13-17 worksheet in the tough 10th Region.

The bottom half of the 16-team tournament gets underway at 4:00 p.m. when Knott County Central----a 14th Region mainstay----meets Fifth Region power, North Hardin. Knott Central was 23-9 last year while North Hardin recorded a 24-8 record.

The 5:30 p.m. contest has Tennessee power Livingston Academy against Boone County---a tradition rich Ninth Region power. First time SCBLIS participant Livingston Academy was 25-8 last year---a solid record a year after going 29-9 and reaching the semi-finals of the Tennessee Class 2-A state tournament in 2007. Boone County went 21-10 last season.

While this is not set in stone at this time here are the projected times.

Games are scheduled based on travel for some teams and of course possible gates.

9:00 Harding vs Kirby

10:30 Bolton vs St. Agnes

12:00 Germantown vs Byhalia

1:30 Millington vs Hillcrest might be a rematch of the MLK Thanksgiving semi

3:00 Clarksville Northeast vs Fairley

4:30 Clarksville Northwest vs Bolivar

6:00 Houston vs St. Benedict

7:30 Collierville vs Fayette Ware

These are game times for the first night and do not reflect the bracket.

The 27th of December is a Saturday. On Sunday the 28th games will start at 1:00 in the afternoon with Houston's part of the brackett being played at Houston High School. Then on Monday everything will be back at Collierville.

We regret losing White Station from the tournament, but they said last spring they wanted to go out of town and we filled that spot. Also finances have driven us to slightly change the field.

Yeah, I'm sorry that White Station is going to miss your tournament, too. It's always been very well run and with some great teams.

The tournament we were set to go to in Atlanta apparently did not work out. So, for now, we've got nothing for Christmas break. That's all right, though. We haven't had a chance to have Christmas back home in Texas since our daughter started playing high school ball. Looks like it might work out for the grandparents this year.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
