Preseason All-State

Recommended Posts

One of my favorite things to do every year is to fill out the Murphy Fair preseason football magazine because it always gives me a chance to have a say in the all-state teams each and every year and it also is a way to compare my own personal all-state selections to those at the end of the year. If anyone else has any all-state caliber names that they would like to let be known I would love to see some of the names so I can follow them throughout the coming year.......

Quarterback: Brandon Johnston (Smith Co.)

Running Backs: Jaron Toney & Taharrin Tyson (Alcoa); Jabronski Gilbert (Milan)

Wide Receiver: Perry Horkins (Harpeth)

Tight End: Tyler Robinson (Alcoa)

Offensive Center: Travei Pryor (Austin East)*

Offensive Guards: Justin Marsh (Alcoa) & Brady White (Cheatham Co.)

Offensive Tackles: Timmy Bush (Smith Co.) & Tanner Owen (Cheatham Co.)

Defensive Linemen: Christian Coleman (Milan), Daryl Warren & Tyler Robinson (Alcoa), & Darrell Fitzgerald (Pearl Cohn)

Linebackers: Dee Herbert (Alcoa), Avery Williamson (Milan), Parker Burton (Goodpasture), & Ethan Cassidy (Fairview)

Cornerbacks: Michael Johnson (Westmoreland) & Richard Taylor (Pearl Cohn)

Safeties: Seth McFerrin (Goodpasture) & Devante Hawkins (Austin East)*

Kicker/Punter: Glen Nabors (Goodpasture)

Here are some players to consider at Goodpasture for state recognition:

#3 Keenan Reynolds/QB He started as a freshman, and looks much improved this year as soph.

#9 Troy Nichols/WR/FS Two year letterman, is an athlete 6' 1" and runs under a 4.5, will be a junior.

#23 Corey Potter/RB/CB Athletic and tough, will be a junior.

#28 Cody Gregg/WR/CB Athletic and instinctive, will be a senior.

#32 Stephon Dawson/FB He is a load, 225lbs, he will be a senior.

#33 Drew Batson/FB/LB Is a junior, is a true tackler.

#42 Parker Burton/LB Is a junior, both he and Drew Batson will be a great inside LB combo.

#53 Matt Ryman/NT/OT Is a three year starter. Will be a junior. Is 6'1'' and 315lbs.

#74 Destin Mason/DT/OG Looks to be a key lineman. Goes about 275lbs.

So ...

On Offense you are going to have all-state performers at four skill positions (QB, RB, 2 WRs, 2 FBs) and 2 OL.

On Defense you are going to have 2 DL, 2 LBs, and 3 DBs that are all-state performers.

How many all-state performers did you have last year?

No, what I said is players to "consider", but you knew that. And as you know, it does not matter how many all state players you have, it depends on how they play as a team! I just thought it might be nice to mention some of the young men who are working very hard, and have a great opportunity to be very good players!

Good to hear that you have several young men that are working hard to be good players.

What you said in your original post is "players to consider at Goodpasture for state recognition." When I hear "state recognition," I assummed all-state performers, and the thread is about "all-state caliber names." Which Goodpasture players do you think will be all-state performers at the end of the season?

I believe that the players I listed have that potential. What it will come down to is how they play this year, and you never know. That is the great thing about high school football, any team on any night. I am sure there are several kids out there that will get state recognition that are not even thought of right now. I know that I am a little bit of a homer, but all the kids I listed have the size and speed at thier position to be those type of players. I hope all the boys stay healthy, and have a chance to fill there potential! The two that should lead the pack for Goodpasture is Matt Ryman (#54 OL/DL) and Stephon Dawson ( FB#32).

Staying healthy is key. I hope the players at Goodpasture have a good season.

    • Good ole Bradley Zulliger. He was a really good QB @ OR. Fun to watch.
    • They should be pretty good in year two for Rang.  Replacing most of the offensive production losing Dozier, Hayward and Rembert , but they're are skill kids in place ready for their shot.  I know I say this every year, but the o line should show improvement after two years in Rang and Kevin Day's weight program.  I still would favor West over Plow and OR come November.  The Rebs will have to grow up a bunch between now and then, and will probably take some lumps along the way with that schedule.  But I predict come playoff time they will be ready.   One of their coaches half joked to me that they could go 5-5 regular season and win the state championship.  Ha ha.
    • there will be a couple of teams, that could make some noise
    • Dyersburg may win back to back to back championships. They are going to be hands down the best 3A team. Plus their District/region/sectionals are not very good. They basically just have to make it to region out of a 5 team district that has a few decent teams. South Gibson will be okay but they graduate their best player and there is nobody in the region 7 or region 8 who is going to compete with them.
    • I remember very well watching things change in the late 80's and yes it's all schools. Most people that are in charge today have any idea because they were raised and taught under this social experiment so they don't have a clue. Anyone that does see the truth for what it is usually try and hide it by blending in so that the School Gestapo doesn't round them up and take them to the Fuhrer ( kindly putting it ). Yes it is all schools not just Maryville. This train ride is not headed in a good direction and if the public had seen a movie of what's happening now back in 1980 everyone would have been headed home afterwards to change underware.
