If anyone is interested in re-locating to Scottsboro (about an hour southwest of Chattanooga), they are currently looking to fill the position of Head Wrestling Coach. At this point, I do not know which teaching openings will be available, but they will consider 'finding' a place.

Staton submits resignation

By Jason Bowen

The Daily Sentinel

Published June 16, 2009

Chris Staton is stepping down as the head wrestling coach at Scottsboro High School.

Staton confirmed to The Daily Sentinel Monday morning that he has submitted his letter of resignation. He declined to comment further.

Staton steps down after a highly-successful six-year tenure. Scottsboro has won the last four Class 5A state championships from 2006-09 and had 18 individual state champion wrestlers during that span.

Earlier this month, local attorney Bill White went before the school board to ask it to reexamine its coaching supplement distribution because he said he heard Staton was considering resigning as coach.

The wrestling head coach's supplement is $3,601.50 with an additional summer stipend of $1,000.

"(Staton) has given up a lot of family time for the wrestling (program)," White told The Daily Sentinel in a June 3 story after he addressed the board. "I feel like he should be fairly compensated for the time he puts in and the success he's had."

According to the board's coaching supplement list passed in 2006, the varsity football and varsity girls and boys basketball positions are the highest paid supplement/stipends, with all three positions paying $18,600 ($12,600 for the supplement and $6,000 for the stipend).

Wrestling is on par with supplement pay for other sports such as track, cross country, baseball and softball. Baseball and softball receive higher summer stipends because those coaches are responsible for the upkeep of their sports' field.

"We have a supplement pay schedule approved by the board," Scottsboro Superintendent of Education Dr. Judy Berry told the Daily Sentinel in a story June 3.

"We have not deviated from it. Our research indicates that Chris is the highest paid wrestling coach in the state in Class 5A."

If you are a wrestling coach who can also asst. coach football (not to be confused with an asst. football coach who can also coach wrestling).....you're as good as 'in'.

Scottsboro City Schools openings can be found here.

Supplement debate leads to resignation

By Jason Bowen

The Daily Sentinel

Published June 18, 2009

A coaching supplement debate led to the resignation of Scottsboro wrestling coach Chris Staton, Scottsboro City Schools Superintendent Dr. Judy Berry said Wednesday.

Staton submitted his resignation last week, ending his six-year tenure which included four Class 5A state championships.

Berry said she and Scottsboro City Schools athletics director Larry Morris met with Staton a few weeks ago and Staton asked for a pay raise.

"(Staton) didn't feel like he was adequately compensated," Berry said. ???Supplements for extracurricular and athletic activities are board approved and we do not deviate from that. He didn't feel like he was being paid enough money compared to other sports. We can't compare (the supplement) with other sports, you have to compare it with other school systems (supplements). He's decided he doesn't want to continue coaching wrestling for the amount he's paid."

Berry said research showed that Staton was the highest paid Class 5A coach in Alabama and that only three Class 6A coaches received a higher supplement.

"I wish we had unlimited money for all our academic and athletic programs,??? Berry said. ???(But) from January to May, we were cut $1.4 million because of proration. This was a terrible time to be asking for a raise."

Staton declined to go into details Wednesday about the reason for his resignation but did issue a statement.

"In April, I spoke with Scottsboro??™s athletic director, Larry Morris, about some concerns that I had about the wrestling program," Staton said in the statement. "At the end of the school year, I met with Dr. Berry and Larry Morris to further discuss my concerns. At this time, it became apparent that our differences were not going to be resolved. I understand their point of view, and I understand that they are trying to do what they feel is best for their situation. I also feel that they understand my point of view. Unfortunately, we couldn??™t arrive at an agreement."

The task now is hiring a new head coach, a duty Berry said won't be easy due the timing of Staton's resignation. Berry said coaches were asked to submit a letter stating their intentions to keep or relinquish their coaching duties by March 31.

"I don't feel like it was fair to the kids, me, the board or administrators, to give such a short window of time. That's the reason we had the (March 31) deadline. It's very late in the year to find a head coach. Our teachers??™ first day is Aug. 4," Berry said.

"We hire teachers and assign coaching duties. We only have a few teaching openings available. We're going to do everything we can to get the word out that we need a wrestling coach and these are the teaching positions we have. We want the absolute best wrestling coach we can find. That's what the kids deserve."

Staton said in the statement that he'll continue to support the program and is proud of what the wrestlers accomplished during his tenure, which saw Scottsboro win Class 5A state titles from 2006-2009 and had 18 wrestlers win individual state championships.

"I have enjoyed coaching at Scottsboro and I have many great memories from my time here. I have made lifelong friends through the sport of wrestling. This program has been a part of my life since I wrestled here in high school and I will always be supportive of it. I will be supportive of the next coach, and I will continue to support these high school young men as they work toward their goal of making history and winning their fifth consecutive state championship," Staton said in the statement.

"This program was in great shape, both financially and talent wise when I inherited it, and I feel that I am leaving the same situation for the next coach. I would like to thank the young men that have wrestled for me, as well as their parents, for supporting me and for believing in this program. I would also like to thank the community for the support that it has continued to show over the years. I have tried to run this program with class and pride, and it is my hope that it is something that has brought pride to the community. At the end of the day, I am still proud to be a Wildcat."

Berry said she appreciates the job Staton did with the SHS wrestling program.

"I appreciate the hard work and dedication he gave to the program and the role model he's been for the kids," Berry said. "I wish him the best of luck going forward."

    • Yes Justin Cruse was named head coach
    • It used to be, I think it still is, a change of 20% +/- gives reason to reclassify. Schools can choose to play up classifications but not down. Here is the mid cycle reclassification info on TSSAA.org When Memphis East changed from a regular public school to an "all-optional" school in 2017 the would've dropped to A but chose to stay in AAA in basketball (baseball, and softball) Penny was still coaching there and with the players they had they would've beaten A teams by 40 and slept walked to the championship. Other Memphis schools stayed in their classifications (mostly in basketball) until the next reclassification cycle. Of course this is the same time that a 4th class was added basketball.
