MUS vs Independence was a tough, hard fought game. Both teams had a couple quality chances. MUS on a set play, where the Independence keeper made a wonderful save. Both defenses were very organized. Matt Montsinger for MUS and Blake Farmer for Independence played well at center back. Both teams had missing links as Independence was without Dykes and MUS rearranged their lineup to replace their injured Keeper.

Briarcrest vs Henry County was a game of opportunities missed. Briarcrest seemed to be making runs at the Henry County box time after time only to be turned away by an off touch or a nice defensive effort. Henry County countered a couple time very well to stay dangerous. Davis, Carr, and Ballard each had loads of shots. Davis was finally able to convert for the Saints. Goligthly and freshman Nathan West played well on the defensive end.

Dobyns-Bennett just overwhelmed SBA. Too many good players for SBA to handle.

Independence vs Bearden game was a good game. Bearden was very organized and controlled the game especially in the second half. They spread the field well and neutralized the Independence central midfield that had played so well last night against MUS. Indy looked a little tired. It looked like they only had 4 players on the bench and the CBHS field is very hot. Bearden on the other hand has both the varsity and JV teams in Memphis. Don't know if they played a lot of their bench, it just looked funny to see one team with almost as many coaches as players and the other team with so many players. The Bearden team had so many players, there wasn't enough space on the bench for everyone to sit. Nice effort by both teams. Congrats to the Bearden squad.

The West vs Briarcrest game saw West go up 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game with aggressive play by West and maybe a little lack of focus on the part of the Briarcrest defense. Down 2-0, Briarcrest responded with 2 goals to knot the score. In what seemed like seconds, West scored again to go up 3-2.

BCHS again responded with a beautiful long kick sent into the box by a BCHS defender. A Briarcrest midfielder flew in from the outside and in full stride, volleyed the ball past the West keeper.

Second half was pretty uneventful, with the exception of frustration and fouls. Both teams had chances, West was able to convert when the BCHS keeper called for the ball, ran out and completely misjudged it. The ball sailed over his head, bounced and went into the goal. I'm not even sure if anyone touched the ball in the box. BCHS benefitted on such a play in the CBHS game earlier this year, so I guess it was their turn for a costly keeper miss play.

That being said, the keeper for Briarcrest, Jared Pacileo, has played exceptionally well all season, probably better than any goalie in Memphis. He just had an off game. He will bounce back though. Congrats to West. Nice comeback after last night's game and the long bus ride.

Fun weekend here in Memphis.

Watched part of the Bearden vs Houston game today. Only caught the second half. I heard Houston played well in the first, but the second was all Bearden. I think the score ended 1-0 Bearden, but it could have been worse. Houston defense made some great scrambles to keep Bearden out of the net all but the one time. Houston players didn't feel they played well, but I think Bearden had a lot to do with Houston's play. Very impressed with the improvement of the Houston squad. They were pretty raw at the beginning of the year. Houston is playing much better and I'm sure will continue to improve as the season goes on. Bearden had a great weekend. Probably the best team at the tournament.

Indy vs Briarcrest game was a battle. Referee was very sensitive to sportsmanship and talking back. Lots of yellows, not sure if any were for rough play. Indy scored first on a PK. The Indy player, I believe it was Kyle Mcgehee (sp?) was fouled in the box. He knocked home the PK as well. Indy took a 1-0 lead into the half. Both teams continued to apply pressure. With about ten minutes left, Briarcrest got a free kick from midfield. BCHS's Zach Ballard was able to time his jump and headed the free kick over the Indy keeper. Both teams stretched the field a couple more times before the final whistle. Both teams were playing with missing links, Indy's Dykes and BCHS's Goin. On a huge positive note for Briarcrest, Their keeper bounced back from his performance yesterday and played really well.

I also heard CBHS defeated West 2-0.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
