Hows the weather going to effect this and other tournaments. I know some schools are already committed to being out until next Tue? Just wondering if rescheduling is an option of just do the best with what/who shows up.

Teaster continues to rack up titles

By John Shearer

Email Discuss Share » Digg Facebook LinkedIn Tweet this Print A A A Heritage High School wrestler Devan Teaster was injured during much of his junior year last season.

This year, he is the one inflicting the pain. As evidence, he beat Rico Vaquero of Davy Crockett on Saturday by technical fall for the individual 130-pound championship at the Halls Invitational wrestling tournament.

"It feels great," he said. "I feel like I'm on top of my game."

And it has apparently been due more to continued recreation than any physical rehabilitation. Since last year, he competed on a national team, did some freestyle wrestling and took part in other summer tournaments.

The work has paid off so far, as he also was the champion in the Catholic Invitational in early December.

"It has started out great," he said. "I thank God for that."

His victory helped Heritage finish seventh in the team competition Saturday with 138.5 points.

Dickson County (254) of Middle Tennessee won, followed by Maryville (180.5), Davy Crockett (173.5), Greeneville (144), Seymour (143) and Halls (139).

William Blount (128.5) finished ninth, while Sullivan East (114) rounded out the top 10.

Like Teaster, William Blount 215-pound sophomore T. J. Satterfield has been in transition since last year, when he was completing his second year of wrestling for Division II Chattanooga McCallie as a boarding student.

But he also is better for the experience, as he won his weight division with a second-period pin of Caleb Baldree of Page after trailing 1-0.

"At first I thought it was going to be a lot tougher until I got him in a front headlock," said Satterfield, the son of Governor coach Tim Satterfield. "It's a big accomplishment pinning somebody in the finals, especially a tough opponent."

Satterfield - who finished third in the state last year for McCallie - is used to facing tough competition, as Chattanooga is considered the wrestling hotbed in the state.

"I loved wrestling because every match you went to, you knew you would get a tough opponent," he said.

Among the other local individual wrestlers who won with pins Saturday were Jon Boatman of Greeneville at 103, Skyler Boring of Heritage at 119, Luke Hall of Seymour at 125, Shane Chipley of Seymour at 160, Jaron Brock of Maryville at 171, and Shaun Morgan of Maryville at 285.

Also winning in the finals were Jose Ramirez of Alcoa at 140, Verino Ruggiero of Greeneville at 145, Keagan Matlock of Heritage at 152, and Logan Ridenour of Maryville at 189.

Nick Ogle of Maryville's 6-4 victory of Julian Ramirez of Alcoa following a late takedown at 135 was voted best match, while Hall was named best wrestler.
