With 44 teams from all over the US in the tournament the team points should be spread out pretty good I believe the Tennessee team are doing really well. Baylor won it last year!

This is one of those statements I don't think I could agree with any less. Were I one of the teams from TN currently in this event the last thing I would desire is more of TN's teams making the trip down. There is often little to be gained from wrestling the same teams time and time again. I have often heard the DII teams complaining about seeing each other far too many times throughout the season... this is tpyically of our own doing... let's look at some of the tournaments the DII teams tend to frequent:

 

1) Black Horse (all of the Memphis teams, MBA)

2) Father Ryan (Ryan, BA, MBA, FRA, CBHS, Briarcrest, SBA, and McCallie although they did not attend this year)

3) McCallie (McC, Bay, Ryan, MBA)

4) Briarcrest Dawg Fights (SBA, Briarcrest, BA, MBA & CBHS in the past)

 

When you then add in all of the required Region Duals, State Duals, and the individuals state tournament many of these teams will have seen each other between 4 and 7 times... no wonder they complain. One thing our program often searches for is new competition with which to challenge ourselves. This is why we will often change-up our schedule every few years in search of new events to attend rather than the same old events.

 

Now, I will state that the SE Prep School Slam is a good tournament with some very strong individuals (the Henderson brothers from Kiski prep, the 160 from Kiski Prep, Tank Knowles and Morgan McIntosh from Calvary Chapel, Chris Caton, and even the several from TN that belong in that group). However, it doesn't appear that the SE Prep School Slam has had any luck bringing in other teams that field a complete team to go along with those excellent individuals. McCallie and Baylor or both excellent teams but they clearly outdistanced the other teams in this event. McCallie lead the third place team by 46 points and Baylor put 7 in the finals and won by 29 points. For comparison Baylor put 8 in the finals at the Fandetti Brawl yet won by only 7.5 points... had the Fandetti Brawl not been hampered by weather I would dare say it would have been an even tougher tournament given Parkland and Soddy's participation.

 

This is not to mention the fact that for the Memphis DII teams traveling to the SE Prep School Slam would constitute the one trip out of state over 300 miles allowed by the TSSAA. If we are to use our one trip, I would greatly prefer it to be somewhere where we would not see a handful of teams that we will see other times throughout the year and particularly where the best teams present are not those same teams. I will be glad to continue using our opportunity to attend events like the KCI where we will compete against teams that we will not see again and where we would likely find equal or tougher overall competition.

 

Please note that while it may sound like it, this is not an indictment of the SE prep School Slam. It is a good tournament particularly for what it is meant to be. In many ways I do like the concept and if they can continue to build it, it will become an even better tournament. Baylor has now won this tournament each year it has existed and I am sure the tournament organizer will continue to search for a team that can wrestle the title away from them. I am just trying to shed some light as to why some of the other DII teams may have chosen not to attend this event and will likely continue to do so in the future.
