"A defensive player shall not charge directly into the snapper when the offensive team is in a scrimmage-kick formation." Rule 9.4.6 A scrimmage-kick is a punt, field goal attempt or point after attempt.

So to answer the question.... you can line up in front of the snapper, but you may not directly hit him. You can push through the A-gap and brush against him. You can engage him once his head is up and he moves to participate. This is a very open area of interpretation and judgment of the official. Usually the umpire is responsible for the roughing the snapper call and should signal he has snapper protection before the snap.

Penalty for roughing the snapper is 15 yards and automatic first down. On a point after attempt, you can either accept the results of the play and enforcement on kick off or half the distance.

can you line up on the center on field goal attempts in the tssaa? If no and someone does whats the penalty?

You can line up over the center yes but you can't hit the snapper with his head down on field goals or punts either one. Most teams stack someone roughly 5 yards off the ball and block him when he releases.

BlueMom nailed this one as usual. As umpire, as long as the defender does not just plow the snapper over while his head is down I am not going to have anything on this. The defender can shoot the gap, he just cannot charge directly into the snapper.

Many snappers think they cannot be touched and this simply is not the case.
