FRANKLIN - On the strength of 14 medalists, including three champions, Father Ryan claimed the TSSAA D-II state traditional wrestling championship here Saturday at the Williamson County Ag and Expo Center

 

On a night when the Purple Irish from Nashville won its 12th state traditional crown, school milestones were set in both divisions, new state records established and a coaching legend retires after 40 years.

 

A Legend Retires: Longtime Baylor assistant coach Schaack Van Deusen steps down as a coach and will also retire as a teacher and head of the drama program at the end of the school year.

 

Van Deusen has coached teams to state championships in six decades (most among all Tennessee high school coaches) and served as an assistant to Notre Dame's Nick Bratcher in the mid-1960s and helped guide Baylor to team titles over five decades with a trio of head coaches Luke Worsham, Jim Morgan and Ben Nelson.

 

The former wrestler at Baylor School, U. of Virginia and U. of Chattanooga, Van Deusen also was head coach for the 1970 state champion Notre Dame squad.

 

"I told the guys that it has been a privilege working with them and they overcame a lot this year to finish second," said Van Deusen. "It's been a great 40 years coaching many great wrestlers, but it is time to step aside and let someone else be in the chair next to (head coach) Ben Nelson."

 

"Schaack has been a tremendous asset to our sport over the years and he surely will be missed," said Father Ryan coach Pat Simpson.

 

Two-time defending state champ Baylor had 12 state medalists, including three champions.

 

"Father Ryan wrestled exceptionally well this weekend and they were the best team," said Baylor head coach Ben Nelson. "I am pleased with how our guys wrestled and even though we have eight seniors graduating, we have a solid group of young wrestlers ready to go next year."

 

Milestone Wins:

 

Baylor's Zach Watson (126) won a school record fifth championship, while Campbell Lewis of Soddy Daisy won a school best fourth crown.

 

Father Ryan's Michael Hooker set three state records this season, including a single season high of 65 wins with his triumph in tonight's final.

 

Headed to the Naval Academy Prep School in the fall, Hooker also holds the state mark for consecutive wins (115) and career wins (239). He closes out his career at 239-11 (65-0 this season) and last lost in the 2010 state finals.

BB, can you give us an update on the team scores as you update the results of each of the finals matches. I am unable to be their and I would like to know how the team scores are going. I am watching on the internet but know how the match would effect the team score would make it more interesting. Thanks
