How are home to 1st times taken

There seems to be a great varation in what is a good home to first time? So exactly how is the time measured. Is it at contact or the first step out of the box ? When kids are at camps is it all from the right or the left side ? I am trying to figure out a good home to 1 st time but it seems to me that it can be all over the place depending on how it is measured. Help?

The clock is supposed to start at contact with the ball, and stop when the foot touches the bag. Slappers will have a much better time then a power hitter.
