Pope Wins Cleveland Duals Sunday, December 09, 2012 - by B.B. Branton

At Saturday’s Cleveland Duals, Pope High School had some unfinished business to take care of and by evening the Greyhounds from Marietta, Ga. had claimed the team title.

“I am pleased with our effort today in winning the tournament and I really liked the way our light weights wrestled,†said Pope coach Jim Haskin whose team improved to 16-0 on the season, while his son Tyler Haskin was 5-0 on the day at 126 pounds.

Asked when the last time his team lost a dual match coach Haskin said with a smile, “to Soddy Daisy a year ago in the semifinals in this tournament so to be able to beat them today (47-14) in the semis and then beat Christian Brothers in the finals (45-21) were good wins.â€

Pope was 27-1 year ago and also claimed the McCallie Invitational title.

Leading the strongest field in the history of the state’s oldest duals tournament, Pope, Pool A champs, is the defending 4A state duals and traditional champion while Soddy Daisy (Pool B winners and 3-1 on the day) claimed the same two state crowns in the TSSAA D-I classification a year ago.

Christian Brothers, 4-1 and Pool C winners, won the state D-II duals crown, while Pool C also had Heritage (Ga. 3A state traditional champs) and Thompson, the two-time defending Alabama 6A champs. Pool B winner Father Ryan (4-1 on the day) is defending D-II state traditional champs.

Championship Match: In the finals, the Purple Wave from Memphis won five of the first eight weights for a 21-15 lead after 152 when Luke Parrish pinned Pope’s Johnny Sexton.

But coach Haskin then turned the match over to his upper weights who won the final six matches, including the final four via falls, for the convincing win. Taylor Howard (285) was voted the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.

Next Up For Pope: Coach Haskin knows his wrestlers will be tested again before the end of the month as the Greyhounds will compete in the Collins Hill Duals (Dec. 22) as national power Brandon (Fla.) will be there, along with Archer HS and then travel to Minnesota for The Clash, Dec. 28-29.

“I hate to not be at the McCallie Invitational this year, but we have a chance to wrestle Brandon and Collins Hill in a couple of weeks and that opportunity is tough to pass up. We enjoy competing in the McCallie tournament and we plan to be back there next year,†said coach Haskin.
