AYBA in Charlotte, NC

Recommended Posts

Been in Charlotte (Carolina Courts) all week for AYBA "National" Tournament. This is one of the first years for this association and it shows. Few teams in the divisions, some with 4 competing for national titles. Officiating is always something folks find to complain about especially if you are on the wrong end, but these guys are in "training". They are doing training during half-time of games, this isn't the time for training refs - at a national tournament. They should be trained" high school / college refs - already. This is among the worst group of refs that I have ever seen.and I've been to a tournament just about every weekend since January. We've benefited and suffered from their incompetence. Some of the good things about the association is that they check for birth certificates and grade cards, and they did some interviews at check-in to verify. This has the potential to be a good tournament - great location/facilities - but those at the top seem "un-concerned", getting by on "the cheap" especially when it comes to officiating. AYBA needs to step it up!

Total teams 70-80 various divisions - girls and boys. We played in the 7th Grade Boys D1 (Crossville Flight) finished 4th out of 6 teams. Also 6 teams in D2 - 7th Grade. 5 of the teams all fairly equa in D1, one team from South Carolina (Cagers) should have been in D2. CB Spiders of Charlotte won the D1 division, beat us in the first game of tourney at 8:30 in the morning by 5; we were 11 of 28 from the free throw line - the difference in the game. The Flight finished the season 41-14 and won 7 titles, team is primarily South Cumberland players, a few others from Crossville schools, and 2 from Pickett Co..

The AYBA tournament was awful.  It was disorganized and the officiating was less then desirable.  The Tennessee Vision went to it under the perception that this would be better then YBOA.  The Vision qualified for AAU but due to scheduling conflicts, couldn't go.  Next year the Vision will be at either AAU or YBOA.  AYBA is a joke.  Even at the state level.
