You are an 8-year-old playing catch with your dad in the backyard dreaming of making that final pass for  a winning touchdown .. You're Joe Montana to Dwight Clark or Tom Brady to Wes Welker.

As a kid growing up, you dream of these moments. "Ice Water in Your Veins" moments.

Fast forward 10 years to this past November and Boyd Buchanan senior quarterback Jim Cardwell is that 8-year -old turned 18 as he faced possibly his last Ice Water in Your Veins moment.

Overtime … trailing by seven …District Title on the line ... Cardwell’s Bucs faced fourth and goal from the Silverdale 9.

A dramatic touchdown pass and catch with sophomore Jack Keebler in the back of the end zone pulled the host Bucs within one.

Go for one and force a second overtime or go for the win.

“We didn’t walk on the field to tie Silverdale, we were there to beat Silverdale,†said Cardwell in a phone conversation Tuesday.

“We had a run option play called, but noticed the defense was not covering (running back) Austin Jackson. So we changed the call to “Bubble Bearâ€. I hit Austin with a swing pass and he dove into the end zone for the 22-21 win in a fantastic finish.â€

For the past four years, two-time all-state quarterback Cardwell led the Bucs to many dramatic wins on Friday nights – 37-16 record and four straight district titles plus playoffs – and now is ready to try his hand at the next level on Saturdays as a punt returner and slot receiver.

“I will be a preferred walk-on at Middle Tennessee State in the fall and look forward to facing the challenges of competing at the Division I level,†stated Cardwell who will enroll in summer school so as to work out with the team.

"Jim Cardwell epitomizes the Want and Desire of a small school high school football player,†said Boyd-Buchanan head coach Grant Reynolds.

“Never has a day passed that he wasn't working to make himself and others around him better. Boyd Buchanan School is proud that Jim will be representing our School at MTSU next fall".

Cardwell had a positive experience while competing in three summer football camps at MTSU and also looks forward to taking courses in the school’s strong business school.

“Another reason I chose MTSU is that the team plays an attractive schedule including future trips to Minnesota and Illinois from the Big 10, plus Vanderbilt, U. of Memphis and Marshal and also has competed in bowl games three of last five years,†said Cardwell.

While Cardwell is switching positions (QB to slot receiver) and changes levels of play - high school to big time Saturday football - his drive, determination and football smarts will help prepare him for the next level.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
