Vandy All-American Goes for Three Titles at TVOC

Vanderbilt junior Gonzales Austin made school history in May by becoming of one of two players this season (Ryan Lypman was the other) to be the first ‘Dores players ever to earn All-American honors in singles and doubles in the same year.

 

Sunday, he has a chance to add to his trophy case as he is in three finals; men’s open singles and doubles and mixed doubles.

 

“I have never been in three finals in the same tournament,†said Austin with a smile shortly after he and Vandy teammate Cameron Colton won the mixed doubles semifinal match late Saturday afternoon.

 

“I took a couple of weeks off after the NCAAs, but I feel I am in shape and will be ready to play three finals Sunday.â€

 

Austin’s triple header schedule shows men’s open (9 a.m.), men’s doubles (noon) and mixed doubles (2 p.m.)

 

Lots of Vandy Black: At noon, Colton and VU teammate Marie Casares are in the women’s open doubles, while Austin and Elliott Orkin (No.5 singles at Florida as a freshman) are in the men’s doubles final on a nearby court.

 

World Champs Face Off in Men’s 45s:  A pair of age division world champions (Wesley Cash and Ned Caswell) face each other in the Men’s 45s Doubles finals at 2 .m. … Top-seeded Cash-Ken Koelling take on Caswell and Robert Evans.

 

UTC in Mixed Open Finals: It’s UTC vs. Vandy in the Finals … Unseeded Pavels Grigorjevs and Samantha Caswell take on the No.1 seeds from Vandy, Gonzales Austin and Courtney Colton …

 

UTC Duo: Caswell is a rising freshman after an All-American prep career at Baylor School, while Grigorjevs is a rising senior for the Mocs … Grigorjevs-Caswell defeated No.4 Ian Chadwell-Kayleen Chadwell in the quarterfinals and No.2 Will Reynolds-Marie Casares in the semis.

 

Austin was a 2014 All-American in singles and doubles, while Colton lost in the first round of the NCAA doubles.

 

Busy Day on the Court: Sue Bartlett is running a GPS summer tournament and also teamed with Mike Parker to win the Mixed 45s Doubles.
