F5HallOfFamer
I would have to say: Chris Jones-Riverdale Marty Scales-Centennial James Rainer-Alcoa Marquis Davis-Memphis Central Sean Waller-????? Guest bartlettcc
I would say the top would be Davis from hamilton (not Central). He broke the 100 and 200 records in '99.
sparrish
Marquis Davis, no question. Placed in the top five in the Pan-am junior meet during the summer of his senior year. Problem for him: academics.
tonto
To speak only of the three guys from the midstate, it's hard to say one or the other when they were all so impressive. Everyone knows how impressive Scales was in 2000 and he's continued that success in college. Chris Jones has certainly yet to see his potential, I saw the guy put up a 10.46 at sections in 2001 and everyone knows he was cruising in the final 40m of that 46.82 (could've definitely been in the 45's). And as far as Waller goes, it's hard to argue against an athlete who scored 110 points at the state meet in 4 yrs, scored enough points to win the team title in 2002 (52), and won 5 state titles and 4 runer-ups. Guest kenwoodrun
What an interesting thread, and a nice list. I guess a lot of it depends on what you call a sprinter. Waller wasn't quite as good in the 100 as he was the 400. He was more of a 200/400 guy (I know, I know, he won the state 100...) Scales was UNREAL in the 100/200, but "just" really good in the 400. And Davis had the state meet everyone dreams about (I thought he went to Miss. St., no?)...I don't know who the best is, but Jones probably was the most versatile. Probably from 55m indoors up to 800, that boy could haul. And a lot of people don't know it, but Scales ran a state record 100m time on our track, FAT timing, perfectly still day...but we had no wind gauge, so we never tried to certify it. You guys are talking about some serious studs here.
F5HallOfFamer
I agree with all of you,but you can't leave James Rainer out now. He did win 3 straight 100m titles,3 4x1,and 2-200m titles. His times at state were never blazing b/c of the competition in a/aa, but he can fly. He did run a 10.6 his sophomore year. He ran a 10.5 in AAU, coming in second place to Arkansas's Ahmad "Batman" Carroll. I would have loved to see these guys all on the track at the same time. But the different classifications prevented that. Keep the posts coming, because they are interesting!!
F5HallOfFamer
Can anyone tell me what colleges these young men ending up going to?? I know Marty Scales went to MTSU, James Rainer went to Western Carolina before transfering to ETSU, I don't know where Marquis Davis went, but I think it was somewehere in the ACC, I don't know about Chris Jones either or Sean Waller. But if anyone knows where these guys are could you let me know? thanks!!

KGP3428
From what I heard, he decided not to play football in order to concentrate on track.
