Reports to: High School Athletic Director

General Summary: In accordance with district policies and procedures, the head athletic coach will work within the framework of the entire athletic program. He or she will provide leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of his or her coaching area through coordination, planning, evaluation, and implementation of programs.

 

 Essential Functions:

  • To be responsible for the information contained in the Student Athletic Program Procedures Guide and the implementation of the policies/procedures/goals therein.
  • Complete MSHSAA rules meeting, district entries, and officials’ evaluations as required.
  • Attend all conference general meetings and selection meetings as required.
  • Be responsible for all matters pertaining to the organization and administration of the coaching of the team under his/her direction and enforce all rules of the Missouri State High School Athletic Association as they pertain to the respective sports.
  • Assign duties to all assistant athletic coaches and evaluate the performance of these assistant athletic coaches as they fulfill their duties and responsibilities.
  • Plan and conduct all practice sessions.
  • Be responsible for preparing public information releases regarding their particular sport.
  • Maintain an accurate squad roster at all times, ensuring that it is up to date and on file with the High School Athletic Office.
  • Cooperate with the High School Athletic Director in verifying that no candidate is issued equipment or allowed to practice until he/she has submitted a current physical with insurance to the High School Athletic Office.
  • Assign at least one coach to be with the squad at all times. This includes locker room supervision until all squad members have left the building and then seeing that all lights are turned off and all doors locked.
  • Prepare detailed equipment and supply budget request to be submitted to the High School Athletic Director.
  • Inspect all equipment, oversee the issuance and collection of equipment, maintain equipment inventory records, and direct Athletic of student managers. Also, enforce rules regarding care of equipment.
  • Conduct all staff meetings and be in charge of all tryouts, practices, team meetings, and athletic contests when the team is involved, including off-season programs.
  • Recommend to the High School Athletic Director teams that may be scheduled and officials to be employed.
  • Serve as an advisor to the students on his/her squad and to help them, by advice or direction, with problems.
  • Instruct team members that equipment is to be worn only for the purpose for which it was purchased, namely, for practice sessions and game competition for interscholastic athletics.
  • Announce and enforce rules and regulations pertaining to conditioning of players and training rules affecting the health and safety of the players.
  • Report injuries of participants to the proper school officials, principal, and High School Athletic Director.
  • Be interested and loyal to the school’s program. He/she is expected to support the entire program and to be an active participant in striving to improve the Athletic program as well as the total educational program of the schools.
  • Be expected, after decisions and policies have been established, to support and conform to them, both in fact and in spirit.
  • Make decisions of a general nature that are in keeping with the established policies and procedures of the school. However, when decisions affect other coaches and other sports, or when the problem is one that clearly falls within the jurisdiction of the High School Athletic Office, decisions should be delayed until the matter has been discussed fully with the High School Athletic Director.

Compensation:

  1. The assignment is an annual appointment.
  2. A stipend will be paid for the fulfillment of the assigned responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  1. Certification – Missouri Teacher Certificate.
  2. Experience desired – At least five years of successful teaching experience in public or private schools and at least five years of successful coaching in his or her chosen coaching area.
  3. Other requirements – Must successfully pass a background check and drug test that are satisfactory to the Board of Education. Understand and support the District’s Comprehensive School Improvement Plan. Must have a teaching assignment in the Sikeston R6 Schools.
  4. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions: Requires prolonged sitting and standing; requires stooping, bending, reaching and lifting; requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials; must work in stressful and hectic environments; requires the ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions; may require some travel; requires physical and emotional endurance; must be able to work long and irregular hours; and requires regular and consistent attendance and physical presence at the job.
