It is my team and I had to stink a few down and fatten a few up to get the best in their slots. After input from all I will revise this list - This ought to be really fun. I need some help pre 1970 for sure.

How easily we forget. Nelson never, ever lost to McTorry in a folkstyle match. He went 5-0 or 6-0 against him over three years. He teched him in the Kirby Inv. finals of 1995. Nelson was the top 171 pounder of all time (actually 172 when the weight classes went weird for 1 year).

Dunning, This is from vague recall, subject to error except in the quality of the wrestler. Ernie Rose of Kirkman during the mid-'60s was so dominating that it was felt by some that his opponent in the State Finals during his senior year earned a moral victory by scoring a point on him. This may be stretching it, but I believe that was the only point scored on him all season. I believe he was the weight below heavyweight, whatever that was at the time. Chattanooga oldtimers can clear up the facts of my fuzzy memory and give you the scoop on him. He is worth considering.

luchador, i have to disagree about nelson

michael carletello won the state 2 times at 171

as a freshman he was 4th and did not wrestle as a soph

pound for pound the toughest wrestler in the state

Nelson was 3-0 against McTorry, not 6-0. Matches were 4-2 (OT), 12-2 (Kirby Inv. - not tech) and 2-1 (State Finals) respectively.

 

But it doesn't matter. It's not who beat who but who was better overall. Nelson in his senior year would never have been able to beat McTorry in his senior year. That's why I pick McTorry. But Nelson was without a doubt an outstanding wrestler.

Could he be as good as Harlow or Scott Wells? Emendorfer must have been really tough also. Two of those three are beyond my time of seeing the State tourney.
