Baseball & Track/Field.... Coaches Conflict?

As the father of a young athlete, I'd like to hear from any high school coaches or ADs. Do you see baseball and track as being conflicts? Do you allow athletes to do both? My son is a heck of a shortstop but also went to the Jr. Olympics in Track this year. My hopes are he can continue both even though they are both in spring once he gets to high school.

I hate that it works out that way, but that's the way it is.....You've got to pick and choose. If everyone that had a conflict had their situation resolved, then we'd have 22 different seasons! Anyways, that's my two cents!

At many schools, however, you may do both. Because track (as long as you are not trying to compete in many field events) is not a sport that requires long hours of practice, many baseball coaches will agree to allow athletes to compete at the meets. Just for an example, I believe Lexington had an athlete that competed in Chattanooga two years ago in both the Track and Field state tournament and played for the baseball team (at the same time the baseball team was winning the state AA title.) It may require a little more strain on the student, but if he truly wants to do both I think that coaches would make allowances for such a situation. Good luck!
