  2. I am not a member of Humboldt's basketball coaching staff. The numbers I rattled off are easily accessible to anyone on the TSSAA website - just click on the 2009-2013 classification numbers. They do not rank them, so I couldn't tell you a top 10, etc. Manassas is legal for this year, despite their advantage in enrollment. Reclassification happens every four years, while adjustments are made halfway through that period. Manassas' enrollment was likely still in the 400s when both of those things happened, but spiked when a lot of Westside's former students ended up there after closing. It's not an excuse for any class A team, but it is a fact that Manassas has 50% more students than pretty much all other single A teams. But, should they win, they will be champs.
  3. I don't do a lot of posting, but to clear a couple of things up: 1) The TSSAA only allows 24 games on the schedule for boys (and girls for that matter) basketball. Any tournaments count two games toward this 24 (you're allowed two tournaments) and Hall of Champion games are not included. For Humboldt, 18 district games, plus 2 Milan, 2 Gibson Co., and the GC Christmas Tourney = 24 games. Cannot add for this year. The good news is, beginning next year, the district decreases to eight teams which means only 14 district games as opposed to 18, so that frees up four games. 2) Manassas, I believe, received some sort of restriction on this year's schedule because they played too many regular season games. That restriction included being prohibited from Hall of Champion games and (possibly) from regular season tournaments/classics. Not sure on the second part. I notice from their CoachT schedule that they are involved in a couple of classics, so this may not be the case. Curiously enough, of the 30 schools that participate in boys basketball in West Tennessee, 29 turned in a schedule, as required, to the TSSAA. Only one did not (for whatever reason) - Manassas. 3) The truth of the matter about enrollment was stated by another poster. After the closing of Westside, Manassas has a considerably higher enrollment than that of its Class A counterparts. According to the numbers turned in for the reclassification: Humboldt - 447, Union City - 344, Middleton - 403, Manassas - 615. Next year, to get to the state tournament, Manassas will have to be one of the top two teams among: BT Washington, Fairley, Sheffield, Frayser, Kingsbury, M. Northside, Trezevant, Dyersburg, Haywood, Ripley, Bolivar, Fayette-Ware, JCM, Liberty, J. South Side and others. This after the graduation of the deified Mr. Buckner. 4) To respond to a little online banter - Legend did get quiet last year. The day after the championship he couldn't be found for days, weeks, who knows. After months of internet silence, he returned to (again) crown Manassas champions before tournaments even begin. That diabolical plan worked wonders last year - even built them a 17-point third quarter lead in the state championship game. So who are you guys to question!
  4. I've known the Haney family since I was playing T-ball with his grandson. Even with a busy schedule, he followed our baseball days growing up at every turn. God bless Mrs. Peggy and the family during these days. My time in radio was directly influenced by the local voices of Bill Haney and "Diamond" Dave McCulley - I'm sure many have similar stories of how Bill was an influence on their lives.
  5. Jim Cawley was a class act who loved the Union City community and its sports. Every town needs one like him.
  6. The district website is www.ballcharts.com/a14 . You can access a bracket under the handouts link.
  7. The Easter Slam includes sixteen teams and is played at four sites (Dyersburg, Humboldt, Liberty, and Milan). The schedule (barring inclement weather) looks like this: Wednesday at Dyersburg Dyersburg vs. Halls at Humboldt Humboldt vs. Madison Humboldt vs. Obion at Milan Westview vs. Milan North Side vs. Milan at Liberty Liberty vs. Gibson Co. Thursday at Dyersburg Dyersburg vs. Union City Century (IL) vs. Union City Century (IL) vs. Halls at Humboldt South Side vs. Madison South Side vs. Obion at Milan Davidson Academy vs. Westview Davidson Academy vs. North Side at Liberty Liberty vs. Clarksville-Northwest Gibson Co. vs. Clarksville-Northwest Friday at Dyersburg Century (IL) vs. Dyersburg Halls vs. Union City at Humboldt Humboldt vs. South Side Madison vs. Obion at Milan Milan vs. Davidson Academy Westview vs. North Side at Liberty Liberty vs. Clarksville-Northwest The winner of each pool competes in the semifinals then consolation/championship games.
  8. Congrats. Noah could probably go somewhere else and attempt to move up the coaching ranks, but stays at home and invests in the hometown program. Any success for him is well-earned.

  10. Congratulations to Chantel Poston of Milan for signing with Purdue University. I knew when this girl was grabbing rebounds by the rim in Jr. High she would be a special player. Good luck to this young lady in the future.
  11. Actually, the unofficial "All-State" teams are put together by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association. Just released their teams this weekend. You can find them here: 2007 All-State
  12. Seymour 9 DC 0 - Great Season PO and the Choctaws.
  13. Any updates for those of us without radio access?
  14. How does it delay the game? If the coach is making an official trip to the mound, the ball is thrown in during this time and is off the field before the coach why does it matter? We don't do this, but I can't see getting my panties in a wad because of it.
  15. Because your district has only five teams, while 13AA has seven. Some tournaments choose to make the 4/5 game a play in (which 14AA has), while some make the entire tournament double elimination.
  16. That field cracks me up. The right field line is reasonable, but left field can't be more than 285. The funny thing is how far it is to left center. It's a definite triple, and most guys can turn a ball that reaches that gap into an inside-the-park HR. I want to meet the high school player that can get one out where the fence turns in left center. Has it ever been done?
  17. I thought of him as well, but only room for so many. Those were the three from Ripley as suggested by Coach Bridges.
  18. First, congratulations to the Ripley Tigers for winning the Easter Slam by throwing four shutouts in five games. Liberty finished runner up, North Side 3rd, and Davidson Academy 4th. Next, the tiebreakers include only wins, head-to-head, and then runs allowed. Runs scored are not included so that a team who is struggling (like Haywood for instance) doesn't have to be subjected to three games of teams running up the score to try and win the pool. It is unfortunate that Station Camp went 2-0-1 in their pool and didn't get to compete in the championship round. The coin could have landed on the other side and they would have gotten a chance. I spoke with Coach Ballard last night and he understood completely - why run up the score all weekend to get to the championship round. Great tournament, despite the frigid weather. All tournament team was: Ripley - Wade Vandergriff (MVP) Ripley - Khayyan Norfork Ripley - Wade Hargett Liberty - Shawn Selph Liberty - Matt Haynes North Side - Josh Parker North Side - Jay Lowery Humboldt - Joey Blankenship Dyersburg - Les Smith Milan - Jake Ramsey Station Camp - Eric Gilley Westview - Clay Prince North Side - Zach Cummings
  19. Saturday morning at 10:00 there will be semifinals played at Milan and Humboldt. Consolation and championship games are that afternoon at Humboldt.
  20. Day 1 results: Milan 6 Gibson Co. 5 North Side 14 Milan 0 Liberty 14 Haywood 0 Liberty 4 Crockett Co. 3 Obion 10 Humboldt 4 Humboldt 17 Westview 7 Ripley 5 Dyersburg 0 Dyersburg 8 Montgomery Central 0 Day 2 games: Davidson Academy vs. Westview Davidson Academy vs. Obion North Side vs. Gibson Co. Station Camp vs. Haywood Station Camp vs. Crockett Co. TCA vs. Montgomery Central TCA vs. Ripley
  21. The winner of that pool's third game will be the semifinal, with the fourth being either the championship or the consolation. The other two teams will match up with a team from another pool to make a third game. Thus, everyone gets three games.
  22. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Smith family who lost this young man and to the families of the other two young people. What a difficult situation in Clarksville. In answer to the bracket question, it will not affect the overall tournament, but will take a game away from the teams in that pool (Milan, North Side, and Gibson Co.). They will still get the three games and the winner of the pool will get a fourth, however.
