Well then the referee was injured in a jv game because I too was at the game. He was sitting in the area that is the floor entrance to the gym. He is tall with brown hair.

The referee courtside was not injured in the jv game. He was injured in a auto accident. I'm not sure why he was there but it was never to officiate the game. There were only two refs there for either girls or boys varsity games. Rarely do jv refs call varsity contests anyway. Even if there had been 3 refs there, the outcome would still had been the same. NOONE reacted to the incident as if it were intentional. Not the refs, not the players on the court, not the players off the court, not the coaches (of either team), not even the fans. Not even the two players directly invlolved in the unforturnate incident. Why? The most obvious reason is that it was purely accidental and very unfortunate, especially for Champion.

This thread needs to be about the future not the past.

Let the injury go --or start your own thread.

Go back and check my thoughts.

Tell me if i am right or wrong.

Hey Redupset do you think Morristown West will make it to the region? Seems like they are coming on strong. I posted another new subject asking the same. Check it out. Time to move on and get ready for the tournaments------ right?

Ok heres what happened with the Tracy Champion injury.... Basile hit the shot and got fouled. He did a routine fist pump while turning inadvertantly catching Champion in the face. Basile then proceeded to appoligize to Champion, the referees, and lastly the coach. The referees then asked Daniel Deaderick (floor captain, whose job is to handle all in-game confrontation) to appoligize to the Coach. Anyone who claims the unfortunate event to be one with the intention of injuring Champion has clearly either not seen the play or has a horrible understanding of the events. The person who said that it was suspicious that there was only two refs... in the girls game one of the refs were hit in the face with the ball and suffered and injury to his nose and was forced to leave the game. My personal request is that before anyone else posts about this event (which is now far out of control) please be aware of the circumstances in a more credible way than hear-say. Besides, this post was about the upcoming District Tournament.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MORRISTOWN — The Greeneville boys lost for the first time in District 2-AAA play, 48-41 to Morristown East Friday night, but still hold a two-game lead in the title race.

The Lady Devils were never contested and remained tied for first place with a blowout 84-27 win over the Lady Hurricanes in the first game of the evening.

Injuries Hamper Devils

Winning on the road is never easy, especially when you don’t have your leading scorer and team leader available.

Then in the first minute of the second quarter, Greeneville lost Tracy Champion, the team’s leading rebounder and top inside defender, to a concussion when he caught an elbow from a celebrating Hurricane Kent Basile and he never returned.

Shumate was diagnosed Wednesday with a stress fracture of the left foot and will be lost for at least three weeks.

Still, Greeneville defied the odds by playing sound defensively and got enough offensively to carry the contest down to the final minutes before losing, making the district record 7-1, 18-6 for the year, and two games ahead of the winning Hurricanes (5-3, 15-6).

Cherokee, who lost to Morristown West in overtime Friday night, is in third place in the district with a 3-4 record.

Greeneville will return to action Tuesday night, traveling to Madison County (NC) and will return to Hal Henard gym Friday night taking on Cocke County in a big district match.

With both Shumate and Champion out, Greeneville became a more perimeter oriented team out of necessity and was led in scoring by junior point guard Eric Anderson with 12 that included a pair of treys.

Brynnan Allen scored eight, Jonathan Murner seven and B.J. Washington six.

Kent Basile led the Hurricanes with 18 points followed by point guard Chase Goins with 14 and Corey Shaw with eight.

The first quarter resulted in a 13-13 tie and the Hurricanes took a 25-24 lead to the dressing room at the halftime break on a basket by Goins at the buzzer.

GHS fell five points off the pace (29-24) in the opening minute of the third, but Murner and Allen scored a pair of quick baskets for GHS to pull close at 29-28. The Hurricanes’ Basile and Shaw scored for East and a 35-28 lead before Dashaud Moore countered for the Devils and the period closed with the Canes holding a 35-30 advantage.

Greeneville increased the defensive intensity in the final period, forcing eight turnovers in the first five minutes, but managed only three baskets, the last on a Moore jumper with 2:51 remaining that cut the margin to 41-38.

The Greene Devils missed a pair of free throws moments later that could have cut into the lead. After a fielder and a pair of free throws by the Hurricanes, Anderson knocked down a 3-pointer that cut the margin to 45-41 with 1:32 remaining. GHS was unable to score again, missing four straight three pointers down the stretch.

Meanwhile, East missed four straight at the foul line, including two one-plus situations and a two shot attempt, before finally putting the contest out of reach by converting the final three points at the line.

Greeneville (41): Champion 1-2 0-1 2, Murner 3-8 0-0 7, Eric Anderson 5-11 0-3 12, Moore 2-8 0-0 4, Washington 2-3 2-4 6, Bailey 1-5 0-0 2, Allen 3-4 1-2 8. Totals 17-41 4-10 41.

Morristown East (48): Chase Goins 4-5 4-5 14, Short 0-0 0-1 0, Shaw 2-6 4-4 8, Deadrick 0-3 0-0 0, Harris 1-1 0-0 2, Kent Basile 8-16 2-7 18, Farthing 3-4 0-1 6. Totals 18-35 10-18 48.

3-Point Goals: GHS (3) Anderson 2, Murner. MEHS (2) Goins 2.

wat r u thinking??????? The only reason the devils have lost in district play is because of some idiot who decided to celebrate a little too early!!...even with shumate out (who will be back by the district championship by the way) the devils are stacked with talent and will be in Murfesboro this year no doubt!

There is no way that any of those teams will make it past regionals. Go ahead and think they have a chance, but don't tell people. you need to have faith in your team, but after seeing a few of them play, there is no way that they will make it passed regionals and on to state, that is a fact.

Do remember 2 years ago?...Maryville vs Greeneville in the sub-state?? Everybody was picking Maryville. Nobody gave us a chance, something like 90% or more picking Maryville big of Greeneville, and look who went to state. I believe the Devils showed up in that tourney with noone thinking they should be there. Even the coach says this group of juniors and seniors maybe the most talented he's ever had. When Greeneville clinches the regular season districts tonight and guarentees a birth in the regional, we'll see who moves on to the big show and who stays at home and listens on the radio. The underdogs will prevail in this one, just face it.

Yes but I think Greenville had a much bigger and stronger team then. Not to say we cannot pull one out again, but the region will be difficult enough to get out of.

Just not sure Shumate will be ready? or healthy?

    • The people need our help!
    • Lol when was last time they won region or got past the 3 rd round.
    • Gravedigger gotta finish filling the hole before hitting 40 East. May need a new Yellow Shirt play signaler on the Stones. And apparently a new strength coach now. Cicadas must've got shaken out of the bushes in Donelson. Hopefully the mower man sticks around to keep DG field looking pristine. Maybe new OC can call in a favor to his PGA friends that knows a thing or two about being green during the season. The heat is on soon. Bring in the 2 way freak Iceman and cool things off. He knows a thing or 2 about wildcats. Gotta take our talents South soon for Nationals. Don't step on my blue suede shoes.
