Bradley Central head coach Ben Smith preaches hard work and a strong effort and his wrestlers gave both Saturday as the D-I defending state duals champion captured the 28th Annual Keith Johnson/Ooltewah Invitational Saturday Dec. 3.

 

The Bears had nine medalists including five champions to out distance runner-up Wilson Central (2 champions, 7 medalists), 210 to 151.50.

 

Walker Valley (1 champion, 5 medalists) was third (126 pts.), followed by Cookeville (5 medalists) with 113 points and Centennial (2 champions, 4 medalists) with 98 points to round out the top five in the 16-team field.

 

“We were in third after two rounds behind Wilson Central and and Walker Valley, but from the quarters on our veterans set the tone for us to win,†Smith said.

 

“To put 10 in the semis, eight in the finals and have five champions is a good days work.â€

 

Bradley Central champions were Dakota Ream (113), 2010 state runner-up Jericho Crutcher (126), Robbie Clark (145), Jacob Bailey (160) and defending state champion Patrick Benson (285).

 

“Our younger wrestlers are coming along and starting to believe in themselves and in our system,†said Smith. “It was important for us to come here and win and get some confidence.â€

 

Best Wrestler: 152 – Parker Smith (Centennial) … in a battle of senior state medalists, No.2 seed Smith dec. No.1 Tyler Schuch (Bradley Central), 11-5, in the finals … Smith placed 3rd at the state last year at 140, while Schuch was state runner-up at 135 and 6th at 130 in 2010 … also today, Smith beat state qualifier Dalton Satterfield (Cookeville) in the semis, 13-5.
