  1. Maryville can win them in 5A, but I guarantee it won't be every year like in 4A.
  2. 5A And I'm not saying this to say Maryville wouldn't be successful in 5A, I'm just saying I think the next logical step if 4A is becoming stagnat is to go to 5A. This title actually belongs to Dobyns-Bennett.
  3. From looking at tssaa.org they missed the 5A cutoff by 7 students and I think they've grown some since then too, so it wouldn't suprise me if they're required to go to 5A in the next reclassification ('09-'10) Someone has to beat up on Alcoa
  4. GQ does seem like he could be college material with the type of offense he runs and stuff. Anyone no if he's one of those coaches that would be interested in that or is he content in the high school ranks?
  5. Congrats Smyrna, glad to see ya'll win it.
  6. Congrats Maryville 45 straight is quite an accomplishment
  7. Congrats to Maryville, by far the best team in 4A. With what appears to be Smyrna pulling away from Ravenwood it's to bad these two couldn't hang around town tonight and strap it up tomorrow afternoon
  8. That's strange because I know Riverdale use to have preseason scrimmages against BA and MBA fairly regularly (they may still, I don't know). It seems this would offer Riverdale a little financial incentive to play the same game just in a more official setting. And I wouldn't think it would be a "scared" thing because they usually faired well in those scrimmages the best I recall. Riverdale didn't necessarily win them all, but I don't ever remember hearing of them getting blown out either. I think it was relatively even if not even favored towards Riverdale some. Did you hear any reasons as to why this didn't happen?
  9. This stinks. Didn't know the games weren't going to be televised up here.
  10. Good yes, but I don't know that they've acheived KING status yet.
  11. If you say so. However, you better ask Riverdale & Ooltewah what not to do before becoming so overly confident.
  12. "Hauls"??? What I heard was students from the county can pay a fee to go to Maryville as compared to the county school they are zoned for. Then when time gets close for reclassifications they stop allowing these county students to enroll (and I'm assuming new ones not ones already enrolled). Do you know if there's any truth to this or do you only have smart comments to make to dodge the question?
  13. I would say there's merit to Ravenwood being beaten by 3 other 5A teams and then questioning if they might not be the best team in 5A. Maybe they are, but with 3 5A losses it's debatable.
  14. I don't have a dog in this fight, but here's my take on the whole Ravenwood thing. Ravenwood could very well end up being the state champs this weekend. However, any team that finishes 4th in there region will likely have question marks to their overall reg. season and playoff power rankings (even if you do get to the finals). In Ravenwood's defense playing in 6-5A is a little like playing in the SEC, everyone beats up on everyone and a game against the D2 state champ ranks up there as well. In Smyrna's defense there two losses were to Riverdale and Ravenwood, two top notch opponents. This fact could also make the championship a little tricky for Ravenwood, because it can be difficult to beat a good team twice. In coacht's strength + success poll Smyrna is 4 and Ravenwood 7.
  15. I also noticed earlier in the season that Maryville has more students than last years 5A state champ. Strange. I heard though that Maryville avoids 5A by adjusting county enrollies near reclassification years. Anyone know if there's any truth to this? If this isn't true then it seems like Maryville will get a try at 5A in the next reclassification. I could see that this years 4A champ could be considered the strongest team in the state. Maryville usually has an arguement anyways. I think some 5A schools on any given week could definitely beat either team, but I think this years 5A teams as a whole we're a little too inconsistent, very up and down. The 4A's have definitely proven they've been strong week in and week out with only a few close games. Lastly, I understand that Maryville people get tired of hearing "well you're just 4A", likewise I think 5A fans get tired of hearing Maryville saying year in and year out that they are the best team in the state. Over the last 5 years if Riverdale and Maryville were to have played I think Riverdale would have won 3 and Maryville 2. I have no statistical evidence to back this up, just my opinion. I think it would be cool to see top 4A teams play top 5A teams during the regular season. It would probably help both sides in preparation for playoff runs. E.g. Riverdale vs Hillsboro, Maryville vs Oak Ridge, Maryville vs. Farragut, Maryville vs. DB, Riverdale vs. BA, Maryville vs. Riverdale.
  16. Thanks. 5A looks as such if a 1.5 multiplier is used. 1995 - 2005 W - 2 (* 1.5 = 3 ) M - 16 E - 4 (* 1.5 = 6 ) 2000 - 2005 W - 1 (* 1.5 = 1.5 ) M - 9 E - 2 (* 1.5 = 3 ) So, with 5A it appears that middle is very strong, with as you said Riverdale accounting for many of those tallys. Another part of the 5A success in middle I think stems from the recent emergence of region 5-5A (Ravenwood, Franklin, Brentwood).
  17. This is a good point of West vs. Middle vs. East. I was curios to see how the numbers broke down though so I looked it up. The representation of regions (W,M,E) for teams that made the state championship finals for all classes is as follows. I'll also admit that I did the best I could to identify if a team was W, M or E. I used Chattanooga and east as E and the W line was a little hazy, but I generally drew it a little east of Jackson. I could have done it by tssaa regions (1,2,3, etc), but I didn't feel like looking into it that much 1995 - 2005 W - 52 M - 68 E - 36 2000 - 2005 W - 34 M - 37 E - 23 However, I would disagree with multiplying east or west times 2 to equal middle. I think it would actually be more like 1.5. If this were the case the breakdown would look like this: 1995 - 2005 W - 52 * 1.5 = 78 M - 68 E - 36 * 1.5 = 54 2000 - 2005 W - 34 * 1.5 = 51 M - 37 E - 23 * 1.5 = 34.5 If this were the case it would be W, M and E in that order for the past 5 and 10 yrs, which to me is suprising that W has been so successful so quitely (at least to me it seems). However, if I recall correctly from tallying the numbers alot of the west is from smaller D2 classifications, which I don't keep up with much. But, take that for what it's worth. Maybe I'll break it down by classification one day and see how it looks...
  18. http://dnj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/.../611130315/1006 This article says Marco Daily was a running back first then quarterback this year. In this situation, is there a minimum number of snaps, quarters, games, etc that are required to hold records for a position? It seems there would be because I'm sure there are alot of good running backs (i.e. athletes) that have had to play QB for a game or so due to team injuries or trick plays that have been run by TB's where they have pass attempts in their stats. I believe Boyd Buchanan had to have their best TB run QB a game or two last year as an example.
  19. in my opinion great movie, great message.
  20. From everything I've seen of him over the past few years Golden is the real deal. I think he would be a great player no matter which classification he played in. And what a marketable name. It just kind of has a ring to it like Jim Bob Cooter However, smaller schools must realize that the talent pool they have to choose from is smaller than larger schools, thus on average the talent will not be as good in a lower classification as compared to a higher one. This doesn't mean a small school cannot have the good players, it just means their good players will likely be unproven and will have to do their proving at the next level like Warren and Turner. Or sometimes the player is just so far above everyone else in their classification you know they're just a great player no matter what. But, overall the talent will generally be better in a larger classification. This also doesn't mean a small school cannot beat a large school. I would have felt good taking last years Alcoa 2A team against anyone in the state. I know all you Maryville fans are having trouble staying in your seats, but I bet you guys would not have wanted to play them again last year. As for Riverdale it's probably not a good argument to debate their talent (take a look at that web link that was posted). They have a Mr. Football finalist just about every year (if not more than one) and have had many D1 commitments. However, 2priceless I can understand your position considering Riverdale generally hands it to Oakland year in a year out. I would be bitter too Overall I think Golden is a great player and has the ability to excel at the next level. Good luck.
  21. Should be a great game between two consistently good teams from the midstate (or the state for that matter). A run game and defense like Riverdale's generally equates to lots of success. If riverdale plays with minimal mistakes I don't think LC should be within 2 touchdowns, however if the mistakes begin to pile up this game will be interesting. My pick is Riverdale by 14.
  22. I saw a great football movie in theaters a couple of weeks ago named "Facing the Giants". It was an awesome movie about a high school football team, so I thought I would pass along this info to all you fellow football fans. It's well worth checking out if you have a chance and it's a good movie for the entire family. Has anyone else seen it?
  23. I'm not sure what to think, I've heard of these turnover problems on a few occassions with Maryville this year. Thus, it would seem that they would have been straightened out by now if it was going to get fixed. However, I never put anything past the GQ magic. To conclude though, Maryville won't beat Red Bank or other quality 4A opponents with 6 turnovers.
