  1. VB-booster, don't forget about the good ole "give-and-go" to go along with the "pick-and-roll" I've seen it run all year long. Nothing complicated about these throw backs. Hey, maybe we're too complicated. Maybe we need to simplify things? Play good defense, look for mismatches on offense, go "old school" on some people and have fun again. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
  2. No worries, auntkim, your Lady Rockets by 20. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
  3. I agree with you hammer. I agree that each girl must look inward to find the answers as to why the team is losing. I'm not sure that the girls, as a team, know what the correct choices are when it comes to running an effective man to man defense, however. Maybe they know, but just not doing it? Still saw alot of MTCS girls wide open after a pick was set. I love the "old school" pick-and-roll. We ran it successfully one time, they used it all night within their motion offense. A good defense will have more impact than a good offense. VB-booster mentioned all the fouls against MTCS. Some were over the backs and reach around fouls which I agree are "bad" fouls. But we are also getting fouls while trying to help others who lost their girl. These are what I call "defensive fouls." I think the team needs to make a commitment to defense, and they would see an improvement.
  4. Sorry EP, I didn't mean to call you out like that, but I'm soooooo frustrated right now. And yes, Coach B, I agree with all your points, we do need more of everything. But those things will take time. My original post was "seeking the answers," as in now. As in, before we play MTCS Tuesday, and before we play Forrest again, and before we play Community again, etc, etc. We have a wonderful fan base, and have had for many years. So none of my comments are directed toward any of you. But it is so painful to watch us get beat. I'm proud of this mountain and the people. I'm proud of where I come from, and to wear the maroon and gold with pride. I only want these children to be successful for themselves and for the school.
  5. Wow. Not sure what to say to that...I guess mediocrity has set in for good. Guess I'll save the rest until after our season. Pat on the back to all the girls, good luck the rest of the way.
  6. I think you put it mildly. We're going through some funk alright. But really, if you don't know your job, can you do your job effectively?
  7. Congrats to the Community girls team tonight. What happened to the Thompson girl?
  8. You gotta love the coach at Community. His desire to win is out the roof. At one point when Van Buren out hustled Community for a loose ball, the coach jumped up and yelled, "thats why we're getting beat, right there, thats why we're getting beat." I love the coach that wears his heart on his sleeve.
  9. Any win is good, but I watched Blackman play earlier this year, and they were not much. But a win is a win. Keep it up. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
  10. If you don't know why the other team is getting a rebound after a missed foul shot, ask someone. If you don't know why your girl is beating you down the floor, ask someone. If you don't know why you are running offensive sets designed for a man to man-against a zone, ask someone. Maybe "someone" should be defined: it could be a coach, it could be a mentor, it could be a close friend, it could be a teammate, it could be a family member, but most importantly, it should be someone that you think knows the answer. If you don't know why you keep running into your teammate while running a man to man defense, ask someone. If you don't know why you shouldn't play defense flat footed, ask someone. If you don't know what "filling the lanes" mean, ask someone. If you don't know what to do if the other team is forcing you to go left instead of right, ask someone. If you don't know why it is so important to communicate on defense, ask someone. The Wizard of Westwood once said that "failing to prepare, is preparing to fail." The season will be over soon---seek the answers. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
  11. I thought the officials missed a call last night, but maybe I'm wrong. The ref called a technical foul on the coach. The coach got even hotter after the first one, and the ref called another technical. The coach was forced to leave the gym. The opposing team got to shoot 2 foul shots and the ball back. I always thought it was 2 foul shots per technical foul and the ball back???? Somebody chime in with the answer.
  12. Not that it makes or breaks the ball player, but I have to agree with a previous post, get a haircut! If nothing else it makes the coach look even worse. They look like someone tried to make a basketball team from Van Halen. If nothing else, wear a headband to keep it out of the eyes. /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />
  13. Thanks auntkim. It was nice to meet you also. We both saw a great game with the Lady Rockets coming out on top. Van Buren had too many turnovers in the second half and Forrest's bench really sparked them late in the game. I also thought Forrest made some defensive changes that Van Buren did not recognize or did nothing about. Good luck to both teams in District play. /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />
  14. Its always good to be loyal to your school, but is too early to give someone VB hasn't played yet bulletin board material. Its a 30 game season. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
  15. Seems the 3 ball has taken over the game of basketball. I've seen too many 3's shot when an open girl was standing under the basket. I don't like it, but coaches will not say much if the shot goes in. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="
  16. Van Buren will not take anything away from any of the players from Forrest. We know we will have a battle on our hands Friday night. Aunt Kim, good luck, hope to see you at the game, looking for a big crowd, get there early.
  17. I agree. John Chaney at Temple(ret.), and Jim Boeheim at Syracuse were and are examples of those throw-back coaches working the zone defense.
  18. That's funny. Van Buren has only one 100 watt bulb lighting the gym. Get your facts straight man, they have two 50 watters on each end!! Should be a good game on the mountain Friday...bring your flashlights.
  19. Just going by the two games I've seen them play this year. JC at home vs. Cookeville, and CR at Van Buren. CR hit 9 three pointers against VB, and JC hit 9 three pointers against Cookeville. So I will call the 3 ball contest even. JC did appear to be quicker on defense against Cookeville's size advantage. CR was called for 24 fouls against VB. Still gonna say slight quickness advantage to JC. Both teams take care of the ball against the press, and two great coaches on the sidelines...Okay, Okay, take away JC slight home court advantage and I call it even. The best team on that night will win.
  20. Community is gonna have to play some good basketball to beat Van Buren, Eagleville, and Forrest this year. Could be a close game with Cascade and they should beat MTCS and Boyd Christian. Just my opinion.
  21. I've seen both teams play this year--should be a great game. JC may have an advantage from behind the arc, CR may have a slight advantage in the paint. I think JC may be a little quicker on defense, CR has a height advantage. Both teams run their offense well and are well coached on defense. Two of the best coaches in the mid-state. I will give the home team the slight advantage in both regular season games.
  22. I had never heard about this stat (getting the assist if the shooter makes a free throw after a foul) I would be willing to bet that all those keeping stats do not know this. I'm sure HHSnumber1fan is on top of it though.
  23. Those same 5'5" and 5'8" girls that were shooting the 3 ball were also guarding the big girls for Cookeville on the other end. JC uses their size well and are super quick on defense. Cookeville got behind them a few times and scored ease baskets but not enough to make a difference in the game. Cookeville also had a hard time with JC press. Coach Brown is very good at getting the most out of the girls. (Side note-- L.Leonard wanted the ball last night. Her right arm must be tired from holding it up asking for the ball so long. Just think what a weapon they have inside if they decide to use her)
  24. Glad you don't keep stats for a living. Do you also give a player credit for a blocked shot even if they foul the shooter? Do you give a player credit for a rebound even if they foul going over the back to get it?
  25. They have one great shooter in the Upchurch kid. Don't know much other than him. He can light you up with open looks at the basket.
