  1. I've enjoyed reading all the stories.....Going out of town this weekend (no games this weekend- whew!!!) It's been a busy season so far, and as we get near the district tourney time, things are really heating up......I ref in East tn and the competition has been fierce.....The fans at some schools are really good to us and fans at others have been pretty rough...I think all fans, especially parents, should all be educated on all the rules and points of emphasis...if you are not sure what they are, ask your coach - he or she should know.....Most of us refs have real jobs, and we are mentally tired at some contests, as well as physically drained....5 Hour energy doesn't always help...Maybe we should try HGH or steroids for that extra edge......It's is easy for 600 eyes to see what 6 eyes may miss- or that 6 eyes may pass on to help the game... Keep the comments coming and I'll answer any philosophical referee questions you have...Stay warm this weekend...I'll have my laptop with me, so keep the thread going.....
  2. Be gentle on us old refs...we're members of the AARP too.....
  3. I'm glad I made at least one person feel good this season..... /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />
  4. As an official, it is the best basketball environment to referee in when these two schools battle....True intensity and fan enthusiasm!!!!
  5. As an outsider who knows the coaches at Rutledge, they are all three quality coaches and quality individuals....There are plenty of high school coaches in the area who come nowhere close to the integrity of the Rutledge coaches, both girls's and boy's coaches.
  6. An earlier post mentioned respect for everyone...players, coaches. etc..If coaches would coach and worry about their teams and leave officials alone, except to ask, not argue, about a call, and if coaches would take control of their assistant coaches and bench personnel, referees would probably, on average do a more competent job. Coaches in high schools should be teachers and role models for their players....College coaches are coaching for their livelihood - high school coaches are not...Most referees work hard and study hard to improve each and every game throughout their careers - if they are not working hard, they don't need to be out there, and that's is up to the local Referee Association that provides official services to that particular school. Consistency is what we all want , effectively applying the rules to officiate a game..contact on the floor is inevitable, and proper foul calling should be whistled - violations should be penalized .... Fans should be ignored unless they physically or verbally threaten an official, use profanity of any kind, or if they interfere with the ballgame by throwing things on the floor, or coming on to the floor during the contest. Game administrators should have ample security to take charge of any facility hosting any kind of event at any school. Professionalism of all referees is a must.
  7. Too bad you didn't have Smky Mtn. officials calling your game....hard to blow a rule like that.....Officials don't need to hear comments about officiating from asst. or players....head coach can ask questions, but in a professional way...should take charge of all bench personnel...always a point of emphasis..... predicted order of finish......Rutledge, GP, PF, Cumb. G., Cla., Union C......Rut. & GP are pretty even....
  8. Devilettes should beat upperman....Mt. Juliet will have a chance to win the whole thing. I'm not sure about Wilson Central...they need better guard play.
  9. As a referee in TN high school BB, 9 times out of 10 the girl's game is "rougher and more physical" than the boy's contest. I agree with Buc. The ability by the boy's to avoid as much contact makes their game somewhat easier to officiate.
  10. Strange and sad situation for the whole school and community.....
  11. Greeneville looked pretty good in win over Elizabethton....had a letdown in the second quarter, but pulled away when they had to. Hard to see them losing in district play at all.....the coach and assistants do a good job with the team...
  12. The rule may not seem fair to some, but after reffing for many years, I would have to say it is a good rule, especially for varsity high school. Game time is time to compete and not practice. You can't get much done with your starters in the improvement department in a game that gets way out of hand. As far as officiating games go, I would rather have every game be competitive and close every night.... as a previous poster implied, "we get paid the same in the overtime games as we do in the blowouts." Expectations by some parents of players on the losing team during a +35 game are different. If your child is a starter, you don't mind so much. But if your child only gets to play in a blow-out, you want the playing time to be the same as in a normal contest. I used to coach, and what I told the JV was that all of you will play (As Iverson says "it's just PRACTICE, man"), but the varsity was told we will have a rotation in most games that are competitive and the twelve of you are vying for the 8 or 9 person rotation. I like the rule.
  13. Amazing in the world of IMAC superiority....How did the Green team lose to this team????
  14. Yes. Keep targeting IMAC officials....you are a joke.
  15. About the fouls away from the ball, I guess I need to elaborate...In competitive quality games when teams are running complicated offenses and defenses, officiating off-ball is more important than ever (screening, posting, positioning, etc.), calls a 2-man crew would have trouble making. Just notice how many calls are made away from the ball this year - should be more calls if officials are following mandates from TSSAA. I appreciate your support. We need more educated fans out there too. I guess.
  16. As a ref for the last several years for TSSAA, here are a few thoughts for all of you to ponder and digest.... I have a regular job like most of you do....refereeing is serious business, but an enjoyable hobby....I have a family of four and make a modest living....From Nov. to March I am officiating 3 nights per week by choice.....hoping to improve with experience in every ballgame....I take a closed book test that I must pass in December every year to qualify for post season assignments....I have leaves in the yard to rake.......I attend a camp every other summer (3 days) that costs me $200 to attend to make me eligible for post season assignments...I have to attend the annual state meeting in our area every October and then at least five more association meetings to be eligible for post season assignments.....I have an understanding wife....I am obligated to accept all assignments because of the committment I made to be an official....I pay association dues and assignment fees to our group...In addition, I pay $55.00 dollars to register with the TSSAA every year.....I referee preseason scrimmages for free to get back in referee form before the season starts over the month of October and early November.....I start running and jogging on my own in late summer to get ready for the physical nature of officiating....We get paid $80.00 for a high school varsity double header, which is less than Volleyball officials make in a night...we try to be consistent with our calls on the floor....I have friends who get divorced because of time spent on this hobby of ours....My partners and I try to carpool to games because some locations are 60+ miles away....I study the rule book and case book on my own from week to week.....We have had a ref get physically assaulted after a contest by an angry parent in the last year....The only days during the season when no games are scheduled are Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Years, and of course on Sunday's(Sunday is when we have our association meetings)....I work hard on the floor and try to improve to hopefully one day get that special assignment of a State Tournament (Boy's, Girl's, Division II) as some of my seasoned partners have....Three-man crews have helped extend the officiating careers of some of our older veteran officials who may not have physically been able to referee much longer....Fouls occur mostly away from the ball, that is why you need that third set of eyes on the floor..and it does make the game better....I try to help younger officials improve thier skills...Our association needs more and more men and women to join our ranks so we older officials can pass on our knowledge and experience...I love what I do...The extra money doesn't equal out to the time put in, but it is nice around Christmas......I take pride in wearing the stripes when I hit the floor...All officials may not all have the same committment to this hobby as I do, but we all sacrifice... Just some thoughts to think about.
  17. Don't know if all the administration, some teachers, and some parents want Smoot back - He has rubbed some people wrong, including some student athletes who do not play football. I suspect he will not return....
  18. Interesting. Figure this scenario. With Brimer there as offensive coordinator, you institute the old Veer offense used a few years ago. Blocking schemes will change from the I system. Offfense will be put in place during the spring practice. Now what do you do in the fall if you bring in someone other than Anderson? - That new coach would have to also want to run the very same Veer offense....not likely....Very few coaches in today's football systems use the veer..... I think this interim placement will be permanent...Unless the players decide not to support the new coach (doubtful that will occur, they all seem to like him - And he is a former Patriot, another prerequisite for some of the JC commisioners & school board)....Brimer might have been named, but probably close to getting out of coaching.....Anderson is a very young head coach, especially in 5A...I hope he is successful for several reasons, but the most important reason will be for his coaching future - at his young age, failure could be bad for his future coaching endeavors (maybe not fair, but that is the way it is). A new beginning - returning to the old.
  19. I know both Chuck King and Joe Pinkerton, and both would be excellent choices - Have known both for years, but don't know if either are interested in leaving there current positions. They may be happy where they are..... I guess current income compared with what JCHS could offer would be the sticking point. Stay tuned. Whoever gets the position needs everyone's support......
  20. Every end is a new beginning..... Veteran players and all new players - SEIZE THE DAY......
