  1. Finally got his offer this afternoon.
  2. Just my two cents here. I am an Alcoa graduate and was an out of zone student athlete who lived in Townsend. I went to Alcoa my entire life. Two of the reasons I went to Alcoa have already been brought up: better academics and the small school atmosphere. However, one of the reasons my parents sent me to Alcoa was because of the after school daycare program at the elementary school. Both of my parents were working professionals who did not get off work until 5 or so and could not pick me up right after school. Alcoa offered a great after school program that was also available in the summer from 8-5. I do not know if this after school program still exists, but at the time it was the only one in the county. Point is, Alcoa, and Maryville too, offer more as a school system then any other places in the state whether it is sports, academics, or whatever. If you had the choice as a parent, and had the means to do it, you would be depriving your child of a better education by not sending them to Alcoa or Maryville.
  3. A-town had to have played for Meadows in my opinion. I say this because Coach Reid believed in the power of the weight room and because of his responses of talking a lot of trash and what not. Reid's teams did it too, but not near to the extent that Meadows' teams did. Also, the discipline at Alcoa is so much better now then it use to be. However, Coach Reid started laying some of the ground work for this, and then Coach Rankin came in and took the discipline to a whole new level. Building blocks, small steps at a time. I have a lot of respect for both Reid and Rankin because both did great things for the Alcoa program. Scots50, just out of curiosity, what high school did you attend and where did you play your college ball? I know you played in college, just a hunch of mine. Go Tornadoes, keep making all of us Alcoa alumni proud!
  4. Yesterday, or the day before, the talk on here was about Alcoa winning because of their tuition/transfer players. Maryville fans have you forgot about several of your kids also being tuition/transfer studnents(a QB, two receivers/defensive backs, and a TE/DE. Who all played college ball)....notable players that have led you to state championships. Point being, every school that wins will attract tuition/transfer students; no matter who you are. So don't try to single us out.
  5. Alcoachamp5, this sounds just like me, you, and a certian Alcoa coach, who also played on your 2000 team, conversation over thanksgiving break in the weight room at the high school......Ha I will for sure give the speed advantage to the 2000 team, their team speed was absolutely ridiculous, and running the wing-t made it even harder to stop. If there is a book on how to run a wing-t then the 2000 Alcoa team should be used for the example. The 2005 team I would give the edge to the line play, especially the defensive line. Previous Alcoa teams didnt commit themselves in the weight room as much as Reid's teams(this is coming from former players), so I think the lines for the 2005 team would be able control the line of scrimmage. The 2005 secondary would be helped by the fact that the 2005 defensive line would get pressure on any quarterback without ever blitzing. I was only 2 years old when 1989 was winning their gold, so I cant comment on that team. Many people have said, "Only 2000 and 1989 beat Maryville and went undefeated," but I argue that 2000 and 1989 only won one state championship, where as 2005 won two.
  6. This is a hot topic amongst many Alcoa fans and former players, and there is a lot of pride in your own team. I know I have personally aruged with members of the 2000 team about who was better, the 2000 team or the 2005 team. But then again as a freshman Coach Dalton told us all about his 1989 team, and also about the 3-peat champions of the 1970's. So I want to hear from all former Alcoa players/fans, and also Maryville because they have seen these same teams every year also, about who really is the best Alcoa team ever.... I personally believe its the 2005 team because of the great talent, and most importantly the depth of the team.
  7. Honestly, who cares where we or any other school gets our players from. Our coaches dont go out recruiting like Fulmer and his staff, but kids do transfer to Alcoa just for athletics. I was a tuition student-athlete at Alcoa, and by God I'm happy my parents kept me out of Heritage High School and in Alcoa. If I am a parent and have a 7th or 8th grader who I think has some potential in football, I'm going to look around for the best football program in my area. Not so much who wins the most state championships, but who sends the most kids on to play college football (college athletes and state championships usually go hand in hand though). College is expensive, and if there is a way for me to save over 100,000 dollars over 4 years, then I'm going to do everything in my power to put my kid in a situation to succeed. Alcoa has produced abunch of college athletes over the last 7 years, and college coaches know this too. If a school is producing good athletes, then a college coach will look at this high school in the future hoping they can find the next Brandon Warren or Randall Cobb, thus helping my kid. Also, if a school has a lot of college athletes on their team, then that means other kids on the team will get more looks because they will be seen by the coaches who are coming to see the superstars play. So, this bickering and complaining means nothing because it just comes down to parents trying to do the best for their kids.
  8. Coach Quarles must have been playing golf during the first three quarters, then finished his round in time to coach the 4th quarter.
  9. Big game experience and superior coaching go a long way. Maryville is use to playing in front of 10,000 people, and have beat teams that have superior talent, on the road, in front of crowds of 10,000+ over the years. WB doesnt have superior talent, so Maryville wins. Maryville 28 WB 14
  10. Uneducated huh? Well I'm sorry but I am speaking the truth here. If Aaron Douglas is 6'7 and that athletic already, then he will be an OT. Its hard to find an OT that big and that athletic, and seeing how UT's line has struggled the past few years, Aaron will be a OT. AND THERE IS NOTHING IN THE WORLD WRONG WITH THAT!!! I never said Douglas would never play at UT, I said he wouldnt play TE. If I was looking to go to the NFL, and he probably is, I would want to go as an athletic OT instead of a TE. Good OT's are taking in the Top 10 all the time in the draft, wheres TE is not so much a top 10 pick. Open up your mind a little bit and think about the future instead of just high school football, because high school sports are easily dominated, but it takes special athletes to excel in college, and I think Aaron will be one of those kids, just not at TE.
  11. 4.6 or better speed in NFL TE's: Kellen Winslow Vernon Davis Antonio Gates Tony Gonzalez Guy from the Bears, the rookie from Miami The TE from the Patriots, who played at UGA Jason Witten Do I need to continue?
  12. Did Aaron Douglas run away from Alcoa? Yes. Is there any Division One kids on Alcoa's defense? NO! Was Douglas the most impressive player on the field? Maybe. But if I was 6 foot whatever and weighed that much then by God I think I would be the most impressive player on the field too. Douglas does not have the speed to play TE in the SEC, and he and all the Maryville faithful will soon find that out. TE's in the SEC run 4.5's, with linebackers and defensive end's being faster than that. Aaron will be another offensive tackle for Tennessee that just happens to wear a number in the 80's, and there is nothing wrong with that. Also, lets say in the year 2008 or 2009, would you rather throw passes to an unltra athletic TE like Brandon Warren, or to a offensive tackle in 80 something number? I look forward to seeing Aaron line up next to an offensive tackle and Brandon lined up as an H-back right behind him, I think that will be a very dangerous formation for UT.
  13. Impressions from the game: -Alcoa did not have the big play threats to beat Maryville this year. -Maryville has no running game at all, and they better find it real soon if they have any chance of making it 4 in a row. -Randall Cobb, Troy Hodge, and Sam Thompson played their hearts out the whole game. If Alcoa is to win another state championship it will be because of these three kids. They are all mult-talented and kept fighting untill the end even though they were totally worn out from playing both ways the whole night. -Where in the world was Brian Sommer? No catches I can recall, and Shiver, who he was guarding the whole night, had plenty. -Aaron Douglas was impressive, but appeared slow, dont see him playing TE at UT. -Shiver, Clendenen, and Clement looked very good, no reason why the Maryville QB shouldnt be a Mr. Football finalist when you have those WR's to throw to, and by the looks of the running game they will be throwing it a lot. -Yes, there was a lot of people there, but the atmosphere was way down this year compared to the last two years, but the previous two years were very very very special teams for both Alcoa and Maryville, and the schools probably wont see teams like that again in a long time. -George Quarles continues to impress, as does Coach Rankin. He isnt scared of Maryville at all and I love it how he runs trick plays and attempts fake punts in the first game of the year, instead of saving them for late in the year, because he has grasped how important this game is for Alcoa, and what it would mean to the school if we could pull out a win. -All in all, great game to watch, two very sound, disciplined teams that I think will both be playing on Thanksgiving weekend, and hopefully beyond.
  14. Great Little District Rivalry Here. An Alcoa Win Would Still Bring A Smile To My Face Even Though I Dont Play In The Rivalry Anymore. Good Luck To Both Squads.
