  1. I'm afraid you may be in for a long wait if you want the two towns to ever come together. Central has been waiting for that to happen with Englewood & Etowah for over 40 years,, and it hasn't happened yet.
  2. For those of you who don't get The Daily Post Athenian, Here is the story as told by J.S. Who normally would not mention bad officiating in a story. Questions unanswered by referees Monday, September 26, 2011 Let me preface today's column by saying that I have a lot of friends who are football officials and I hope they still will be after what I have to say. Being a former football, baseball and basketball official, as well as a youth sports coach for 41 years, I sympathize with the plight of game officials - they are a group everybody loves to hate and easy targets for abuse. Before, and even sometimes during games, I talk with the officials - exchanging pleasantries, jokes and sharing stories. Junior, Jackie, A.J., Rico, etc., they're all good guys and I have nothing but the utmost respect for the job they all do. There are times during games when I would like to tell coaches if they would pay as much attention to what they need to do or the shortcomings of their own team as they do nit-picking calls by the officials, they probably wouldn't need to worry about penalties. Having said that, I am compelled to say this: I have seen poor individual officials - like anything else, there is good and bad. But, collectively, I have never seen a worse officiating crew in my 37 years on the sidelines as the one that administered Friday night's game between Bledsoe County and McMinn Central. It was as if whatever association provides the officials filled out the crews for more important games and then said "who do we have left to go to Bledsoe County," figuring the game would be over by halftime and the officiating wouldn't matter. Associations often use rating systems for their officials such as A, B and C with obvious implications. There are 26 letters in the alphabet and none would apply to Friday night's crew. Paired with stronger crews, they may not have been as incompetent, but as a group ... well you get my drift. They were equally bad on both sides of the field, but let me give you just a few examples from the Central perspective: * Central was called for a block in the back by one official, even though there was another official much closer to the play who did not throw a flag. When asked about the call, the official said "I saw it and I just had to call it." Later when questioned about an obvious cut block on a kickoff, his explanation was it "didn't happen in my area." * The officials threw a flag on Bledsoe County and their head coach sprinted, not just past the numbers or hash mark, but to the center of the field where the officials were huddled. Boys and girls, that's not allowed under any circumstances, the flag is automatic. When Central Coach Josh Goodin questioned why Coach Jason Reel wasn't penalized, the official said he was just trying to get their attention to call a timeout, which, in the end, he did not take. "Then why wasn't he penalized," asked Goodin. The official finally admitted: "You're right, coach, we probably should have thrown the flag." * On the play that eventually decided the game, Central was called for a face mask penalty, but in desperation and hoping for a miracle, the Bledsoe quarterback threw the ball underhanded toward the line of scrimmage with no eligible receiver in the area. Intentional grounding? Apparently not. Worst case scenario, the penalties would have offset and the down replayed, but from the 6 and not the 2. * With Bledsoe threatening at the end of the first half, the officials threw a flag on Bledsoe, stopping the clock. After a conference, the officials waved off the penalty. Since the previous play did not end out of bounds or as the result of an incomplete pass or change of possession, the clock should have started when the ball was marked ready for play. It was not. Fortunately, Central held on downs. Had they not, Bledsoe would have had an additional seven or eight seconds to work with and, considering how the game ended, we know how important those seconds can be. * Twice, the head referee lined up on the wrong end of the field for kickoffs. It was kind of like having the The Three Stooges meet Larry, Darryl and my other Darryl. Goodin took the high road when asked about the officiating. "I don't think they were as much biased as just incompetent and weren't totally responsible for us losing the game - they hurt Bledsoe, as well," said Goodin. "Someone said once that if you don't remember seeing the officials on the field, then they were doing their job. Unfortunately, it seemed like a lot of what happened Friday centered around the officials and it just shouldn't be that way." This kind of commentary is totally out of character for me and not intended to be an indictment of the officiating profession, but something I felt had to be said of an isolated incident. The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association should review the circumstances and like the pop group MIlli Vanilli, these officials should never be allowed to perform again as a group.
  3. "They are the same ones that was out there last year, minus about 10 seniors and some juniors." When you lose "about 10 seniors and some juniors" off a forty something man squad, I would think you have some different starters than last year.
  4. I can't believe he said that!! Did Benny actually say that? Quite tacky of him if he did.......unless he's admitting he got outcoached by a much, much younger coach......or admitting that McMinn's kids played with more heart and desire than his Owls did. Regardless, I'm shocked that he would say something as immature as that. http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2009 ... ideo-preps See for yourself..
  5. Here's how I see it, Polk makes it to the 3rd round this year. But it ends there when they meet the F5. Go Chargers!!!! Alcoa_____________ ___________________________ _Alcoa__________ Tyner_____________ __________________________________________________________Alcoa_________ Austin East________ _______________________ ___McMinn Central____ McMinn Central____ _________________________________________________________________________Alcoa Bledsoe Co._______ ______________________ ____Loudon___________ Loudon__________ __________________________________________________________Polk Co.______ Kingston_________ ______________________ ____Polk_Co.__________ Polk Co.__________
  6. Impressed, That's about all I can say after watching my Chargers take on the F5 last night. I think the Alcoa fans stated "you just don't understand until you experience it" Now I understand. Alcoa seniors will graduate with 4 state championships to their credit. Good Luck.
  7. Looks as if the Meigs faithful have accepted their place in this new region? :justwrestle:
  8. I just don't think they have anybody that can open up a hole to run through. Or protect the passer. I would love to watch this team if they had the O line from a couple years ago. I'm afraid the line play will take another step backward next year if Coach can't find some beef to put up front.
  9. Just wanted to bump this back to the top, Chargers win 21 - 7
  10. Just to let you guys know SgtEagleFort did play at Polk but it was only mop up duty on Monday nights. He couldn't handle Polks physical practices and quit his junior year. When he was on the team he was known as an ERW (Eat - the team meal, Ride - the team bus, & Watch from the sidelines). If he played as tough as he talks he would have been all state. So Central fans keep this in mind when he gats on here and starts running off at the mouth. We all look forward to a good hard fought game Friday night! You gotta love Central/Polk week!!
  11. This is the cup 6+4+3 drinks from every Friday. He may wear his red glasses, But he loves him some blue Koolaid. He just doesn't like to talk about it. I'm so confused,,
  12. I'm still trying to figure out why we're talking about Polk instead of Cleveland? Yes Polk is a "Region" game, But Central has bigger fish to fry before they can start thinking about Polk County.
  13. Well, for those who don't know #7 is family of Coach Goodin and Masingale for MC. He is a great kid, and big reason that McMinn took this game. There was no ill intentions involved. 6+4=3, I know that you have always had a problem with the discipline at MC (the Derrick era). I disagreed sometimes with your view sometimes and agreed a lot. This is a new and wonderful era, I could not have been more proud of the reserve and class that was shown by the Chargers. This is due to all the coaching staff. This will come in to play when things are not going so well. If we would have lost this game by 20 I would not have been more proud of the discipline I witnessed Friday night. I know the Goodin family and have been friends with Chad for a long time. I believe he will do a fine job. I meant nothing towards his coaching abilities or discipline. I just thought it was funny after watching the players and fans act this way for the last two yrs or the Derrick era that a fan would complain. Although Chad was there, and helping. I think you should probably refer to the Head Coach. His name is Josh. Someone who is so close to the Goodin family would know that.
  14. I wanted to add this game,, But I see OldSchool beat me to it. Would love to see that one again. Bring back the bone!
  15. We've got the Goodin brothers helping,, Would be nice to get Shannon in there too. She was just as tough as the Goodin boys. Proud to have this family representing Central.
  16. ...When the F-5 comes to Chattanooga(Howard), I believe it will be SRO...the crowd should be larger than when Alcoa played at McCallie a few years ago!!! You've got to be joking,,, Howard brings more band members to a home game than fans. Alcoa will have more fans travel 100 miles to get there than Howard will have walk across the street to be there.
  17. Didn't have to go very far to find a replacement. Nonaburg to Liberty Hill. This home boy will stay for a long time if he can be successful. And I believe he will be. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
  18. Does Goodin have any ties to Central? /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> He He
  19. Glynn Academy, Doesn't sound bad, On an island on the East Coast. http://glynn.schooldesk.net/Default.aspx?a...esk.net/academy Big raise in pay for him, A job for Becky, Great education for his two girls. Not that hard of a decision. But it is a long way from Nonaburg. Good Luck Coach, Congratulations.
  20. He's the obvious choice, and I think a good choice. But,, I think he was only planning to stay one more year and then go to coach at the college level. Don't know if this would change his mind or not.
  21. Anybody heard anything yet? Coach Wilkerson should be his replacement.
