  1. Central beat Polk by 2 and very easily could have lost the game, ND beat Polk 49-0 (42-0 half) and obviously could have been a lot worse. Polk ran for over 300 yards against MC, had about 50 against ND, most of which came against reserves. ND 52 MC 7
  2. First, this was a game that lived up to it's billing. Both teams brought it for 4 quarters, something I can say Polk has done in 3 games now. This is the best Chiefs team that I have seen and the game could've have gone either way. Glad to see 5AA having good wins against good teams this year. Polk has set the standard for the district the last few years and the other teams have stepped up, let's hope this continues as our district has been called one of the weakest in recent years. Second, the Miller kid may not be getting as many yards as last year, it isn't from lack of effort. The teams we have played are good teams, some real good. When teams know what is coming and can put 8 or 9 in the box, yards are hard to come by..especially against a real good team like Sequoyah. Running the ball is Polk's way, always has and alway will, and I enjoy it. Other guys stepped up and made key plays and that's what it takes, executing (like the 60 yd pass) and taking advantage of the defense focusing on the run. Third, this team is a real good team, but nowhere near the teams of 2009-2011. Those had several athletes, and solid role players. No disrespect, but they dominated from the whistle angainst district, and came as close as you could to beating CAK without doing so. I honestly believe that the top 3 teams in state that year was Alcoa, CAK, and Polk and that either could have beaten the other. But that is the past and opinions are well, you know. Last, cannot compare Davis to the others in the way most are (state titles), obviously we don't have one of those. I do know this, we, like alot of schools in this area, are small, with kids that play for the love of the game and most are not what people call "athletes", and he and his staff get the most out of them. Coach Davis came in and took a program that had won about 3 games over a five year period and has been a consistent winner since 2001. he number of players on roster went from 25-35 to consistently in the 60's and may even broke 70 a time or two. As we all know, the state title has gone 8 straight years to the district we play in the first couple of rounds of playoffs, IMO the best in the state. Before this format, we played against the likes of Goodpasture, David Lipscomb, Pearl Cohn, and White House...the best in that era. All of us have played them if you've been to the playoffs, and I dare compare any district team and see who won more than the 5. From what I have seen, the distrcit is capable of making a little noise this year and win some. Ending, finally...I wouldn't trade our coach or his staff for anyone else and appreciate very much all they have done for our county. i hope Coach stays around as long as his daddy has, they are what Polk football is all about..pride and toughness.
  3. With or without Miller, if Polk plays the way they have the last two games...Walker Valley will roll to an easy victory. It is not all Miller, he had nearly 200 yards against East Ridge and we lost, 94 against Central and we won (the score is all we beat them in). It will take alot more heart and effort this week to come out with the W. My pick.. Walker Valley 33 Polk 20..unless ....
  4. Last week Polk played a "lazy" 1st half unlike what we have seen. They also had some penalties that they usually stay away from. The QB situation has been an issue and it finally caught up with them. Two turnovers in tough areas and times didn't help matters either. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. No excuses, just facts. Hopefully these young men learned from this and know now that regardless of opponent, you have to bring it from the opening whistle. If they play anywhere near the game they did last week, Central will outscore them more than 1 pt. I don't think people give Central enough credit, last years game was not decided until mid 4th qtr. Both teams have similar rosters as last, so I expect a similar game that could go either way depending on mistakes. I hope both sides bring it from start to finish the way this game should always be. Hope both teams are full strength and stay that way after the final whistle. I predict a close win for Polk, but they better be ready from go, can't just play so-so in this one or they'll leave with their tails tucked between their legs.
  5. You are all right, he is a real fine young man and gives it all every play. Not to mention, he always gives credit to the players around him as he could not do what he does on the field without them. Less than 15 hours after this incredible night he had, he was where he always is on a saturday this time of year, on the sideline helping with the young kids of the youth football program. Not mentioning himself what transpired the night before, but humbly accepting congratulations from everyone who offered with a thank you. No celebrating, with the exception of a few pats on the helmet from teammates, just a tap on the heart and a point to God, then runs off to the sideline for a rare breather. Kids like this are getting more rare, but every team has some I am sure. This is why I think high school football is the most exciting sport there is. So thank you Mr. Miller and others like you all over that play this game the way it should be. As far as the 6 tds, the 411 yards, and the 44 carries.....we need to mention 0 fumbles. Kudos to a real good Sequoyah group, played very hard and good luck against the Redskins. D 5AA has been very competitive this year and has been a joy to watch.
  6. McMinn tried more than once and Cleveland too, so I've heard .In my opinion, with all the extra schoolwork (credits) that students have to have now compared to 10-20 years ago coupled with the fact that sport seasons run into each other and there is more than the big 3 (football, basketball, and baseball) for kids to choose from. I've heard some say that there are athletes in the stands, that's true everywhere. We could have said for the past few years that our basketball team would have been alot better with if....IMO, Central is better known for it's basketball and baseball, as Polk is known for football and baseball. Look around, name a school that is successful in all 3 consistently, district competitive not state. Occasionaly one sport picks up but another drops, heck we won a basketball district and region championship in '99:)but I don't think we won a football game that year..the year before Coach DD came home.Good luck to you guys, support the kids that are out there giving all they can. They play on fridays, not sunday.
  7. Haven't seen heart in but only a few players so far this year for Polk. They have come out flat in both games and have had just a few sparks in the games. Yes, they lost some key players from last year, but more important, they lost leaders on the field. Once they realize that this is their time and someone (or few) step up as leaders, those sparks will catch fire and these guys can reach their potential. They have played tough competition so far, but losing with all out effort is different from playing with what seems no fire. (not saying all players). As far as the game this week, I predict a Polk win, but closer than the'experts' think, if Polk plays with the same mindset as the previous two weeks. I'm sure the coaches will be hard on them this week, and if they wake up and man up, this could be a long night for the neighbors to the north.
  8. First and only post on this thread. This was a great game between great coaches andmore importantly great kids. My only gripe is about some of the post saying if we (SP) would have played the first half like we did the second, we would have won by 3-4 TD's. Well if that is the case, if Polk would have played the second half like they did the first it would have gotten real ugly. There is a reason both didn't happen, great coaches and kids. Polk came out ready to play with a gameplan and executed to near perfection. At halftime SP made adjustments and executed. In the end there were alot of young men in orange/black and red who left everything they had on the field. Nothing to be ashamed of if you're a fan of either team. It was my first trip to SP, met some fine folks and even got introduced to 'Hammers' and got me some britches. Great team you've got and great fans. Good luck the rest of the year and Good Lord willing, hope you guys have as good a trip to our place next year (except for the ending). Oh yeah, did we bring enough fans for you powerp?
  9. This is a great kicker/punter, best I have seen in 2 years, but he was 0 for 2 in XP against Polk. One was blocked and can't remember the other one. Not taking anything away from the guy. He should be playing for a D1 team next year.
  10. Being a Polk fan, I will pull for East Ridge in this one. If ER can't pull off the upset, then I will be WH fan (unless we play you) the rest of the way. White House, the team, school, and town are as classy as you can get. We found that out last year and alot of our fans still talk about what you guys did for our coach and his family. Good luck to both teams and may God keep all players and families safe. God Bless.
  11. Polk is not a passing team, they run the wing-t offense. They are very young on both sides of the football. The defense is pretty good, but the offense will have to stay on the field to keep them rested. It will take a huge effort from the young Cats to pull it out friday.
  12. Hey Wrecking Crew, welcome to the bridesmaid club. Still think a state championship is attainable?
  13. You are right, when it works it works, expecially against (no disrespect) the weaker teams in the region, but you cannot be one dimensional, especially against good teams like Central. You are also right about South Pitt, but if you recall, they also play in a weak region (they are still one of the best teams in the state regardless of class) and when they played a real good team (Tyner), they had to pass to win. Polk does not have the athletes SP has by far, but my point is this, use the games against weaker teams to try different things to help you against the better teams (Central, Howard, and playoffs). I believe Central is a team that can mix it up and that will help against 4a teams. I am not whining about a loss, Central flat out whooped Polk's butts. I also want to comment about the kicker, he is the best kicker I have ever seen in high school. It didn't even look like he was trying and that FG he made would have been good from 50 yards. One last thing and I will shut up, Central has a real good team, but more credit is being given to Coach Derrick than he deserves. This is not jealousy speaking either, he came into a team loaded with a super sophomore class with alot of talented young men. They deserve all the credit. Good luck to both Central and Howard this week and in the playoffs.
  14. Sorry to interfere in a Central/Howard thread. I just wanted to speak about Coach Tarver and two of his assistants who attended the Polk/Central game last friday night. I had only read about in the papers and seen these men on the sidelines before, but I wanted to meet these men. Everybody talked about class on the Polk/Central thread last week, after I met and talked with these men, I witnessed what class is about. Just the demeanor of these men demanded respect. Everyone who has seen Howard play this year will see what a big difference these men have made. Good luck to both teams this week and congatulations on a great year.
  15. Just a reminder to everyone, this game has come down to the very last play the last 2 years. I know Notre Dame is way down compared to past years, but they have one of the best coaches in the region who will have his men prepared. Winner of this game gets 3rd, loser 4th in the region. I really like White House and their fans, but I would like to see another part of the Nashville area this year. Hopefully our young men have put last week behind them as we should. If they have, and I think they did, they should go out and take care of business.
  16. Hopefully someone else will be calling offensive plays this week, last night was pathetic. 3rd and 1 and a sweep play against a faster team with it raining. This happened 3 times against Sequoyah with same result. 4th and 8, behind by 16 with 5 minutes to go, let's surprise them with a WR screen 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage. We gotta mix it up some. Our defense played another great game, but they had to be on the field at least 35 minutes, thats ridiculous. Granted, Central has a good defense too, but if team is putting 10 guys in the box, you can't keep running the same stuff over and over, especially when you can't make a first down in 3 quarters. Sorry for all that, but had to get it off my chest. As for this weeks game, Polk should win, even with the same ol' same o offense. It is senior night so congratulations to all seniors.
  17. Did Central not have these same speedy, skilled athletes (minus two) that they had last year? If you remember, they spent most of the night trying to keep up with the so called slower Polk players. I'm not saying that Polk is loaded with speed, but if I remember correctly, and I do, last year had alot of Central fans breathing a sigh of relief and knowing that Polk was alot better than they anticipated. I will be honest, I am a big Polk fan, before the season, I picked Central, as did alot of others to win not only this game, but the region. They are defending region champs and until someone knocks them off , they are deserving of what they've earned. I though Polk would have a few struggles this year with all the lower classmen that were playing (remember you guys were in this position a couple of years ago), especially in key positions, but this team has gotten better each and every week. It gets old hearing how Howard and Central have too much speed for Polk, granted Howard has won the last two years by a combined 4 points and Central won by 1 last year. I guess speed does kill. I'm not taking anything away from either team, both are real good teams, I just think that "too much speed" phrase is way over used.
  18. This is a game that makes friday nights better than saturdays and sundays. Both teams will give it all they've got and walk away with memories that will last a lifetime. By far one of the best, if not the best football games in both teams history, was played out last year. I don't think that anyone thought there would be that many points by either team. As for this year, you cannot compare what each team did to a common opponent. Central has a type of offense designed for big plays, Polk on the other hand has a grind'em out type of offense. It really surprised me that they had some big plays last year in the game against the quickness of Central. The defense at MC has improved has has PC. This is two totally different teams, I just hope we as fans get to experience something as good as last year. Good luck to both teams and may God keep all safe.
  19. Could not have said it better myself, I don't believe this Trevy guy even goes to games. Howard's QB played a great game, but give their O-line credit for giving him time to throw. Polk's D-line is very good, and for the most part were not getting pressure. I wish Howard the best of luck the rest of the season and really enjoyed a great game friday. I was also glad to see Howard's band, they are always entertaining and put on a great show.
  20. This is usually a game with alot of running and hard hitting. Not alot of possessions, turnovers and the places on the field where they take place are crucial. This game will be closer than the experts think. Polk 20 Meigs 14. Meigs is always a tough team to play against at home.
  21. Howard has always got speed, nothing new. They had it last year and won by 2, in the city. Polk has improved its defensive speed and they always hit and that will wear speed down. As far as best defense in the state, no, paper is just paper. The offense is still improving each week, different players stepping up every game. I don't have a prediction, but if the last few years are any indication this will be nail-biter. Anyone know if Howard will bring their band? Always fun to watch.
  22. Polk has worked out alot of the kinks they had earlier on on the offense, but still have some work to do. The defense has been steady all season long. I don't care who you play, 3 shutouts in 4 games is impresssive. A real weakness is the kicking game. Extra points are crucial in a game like this one and that could be the difference. SW 21 PC 20
