  1. I agree. I think some of the teams that were on top last year, may have lost some; and the teams that were on the bottom last year will be improved. Should be an interesting year!
  2. I'm happy to see dad and old man haven't forgot me.
  3. FYI: Key points in BOLD. Baseball Rules Change Puts Moratorium on Composite Bats Baseball Rules Change Puts Moratorium on Composite Bats FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Elliot Hopkins INDIANAPOLIS, IN (July 7, 2010) — One of six new rules changes by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Baseball Rules Committee forbids the use of composite bats until they can meet the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performance standard. The changes, which were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors, will take effect with the 2010-11 school year. After thorough testing by the Baseball Research Center at the University of Massachusetts–Lowell, the NFHS Baseball Rules Committee voted to outlaw composite bats until they can produce consistent results through the life of the bat, be made tamper-evident and be labeled as a composite product. Elliot Hopkins, NFHS liaison to the Baseball Rules Committee, visited with James Sherwood, director of the Baseball Research Center, and spent several hours witnessing composite bat testing. “Rolling the bat gives it a higher performance,†Hopkins said. “It can significantly increase the performance and that’s huge in our game.†Rolling the bat isn’t the only problem. Rolling only speeds up the performance enhancement that would occur over time after normal use. Even composite bats that were not altered will eventually see this increase in performance, and the rules committee views that as a major concern. Rule 1-3-2 through 5 was completely rewritten with the intention of creating a rule that preserves the intent and spirit of the old rule, but is better suited to products resulting from new technology. Under the new rule, bats with composite handles and tapers would still be legal. The stricter language applies primarily to the barrel of the bat. “While the handles and taper are important components of the bat,†Hopkins said, “the area that we recognized as more susceptible to abuse is the barrel.â€
  4. I would never be "happy" about turning someone in for a rules violation. First I would approach the Coach, AD, and Principle and let them know that you think they are violating the rules and if they don't respond........., then do what you feel is right.
  5. Don't know who Coach Cal is, but he is misleading and misinforming you. A 15 on the ACT won't meet the minimum requirement at many if not most college institutions. Just because you qualify/clear the NCAA and the NAIA (beginning 2011) does not mean you meet most college entrance requirements. "Finding a way" to get GPA raised sounds alot like falsifying information and that will get you real trouble if it's ever found out. You had better make sure you take all the "core course" requirements set forth by the NCAA and the NAIA.
  6. absolutely not true...a kid who trains with weights is not only stronger, bigger and potentially faster...but must less injury prone...and i am assuming that the weight program is done right...no doubt should run...but too much running at the wrong time (i.e. when trying to get bigger and stronger) can actually neutralize the weight trainning...it has to be done in conjuction with the weight program and over time so the kids do not pull something or get heavy legs, etc...i'd love to put a kid who is in a great trainning program...weights and speed and conditioning...up against a guy who does his push ups and runs, runs, runs...if your statement were true...every college in america or every sport in the world would be doing it...but NO one does...every where around the world (except in 3rd world countries) in every sport...weight trainnig is what they do! this is why athletes are bigger, faster, stronger and better than they were 25 years ago... I will respect your opinion but I do not agree. I have been in coaching for over twenty years and have seen much more success in our training currently than the weight room workouts. I have tried both and have had less injuries and better results with our new program. Everything we do requires the whole body and simulates the movements needed in football. Most college and pro teams have started to implement these type programs in their training. I wish your team much success and encourage your coaches to look into this type of training. Our training resembles the strong man competition lifting versus the body building type training. We have had competitions with area schools in strong man competitions and we are overall much stronger and in better condition. I have found that most coaches are not really qualified for weights and I have seen kids injured trying to lift incorrectly with to much weight. Most lifts are single muscle development lifts and are not even sport specific. Once again ,best wishes for a great year. Most of the successful programs do both. Weight Room and PT type training. In college we did both. 3 Days Weight Room; 2-3 days PT type training(flipping tires, climbing ropes, peg borards, push ups, situps, carrying each other, etc, etc,) I agree that some coaches aren't qualified, but it's their job to educate themselves.
  7. So if a "summer team" is playing games on a high school field with someone coaching other than the high school coach does that break the rule or not? In my humble opinion it would break the rule.
  8. All good posts. Less than 1% of all college athletes get full ride "athletic scholarships". Most have a combination of athletic and academic. Study Hard! Practice Hard! Play Hard!
  9. Here is the rule on Dead Period from the TSSAA by-laws. In my opinion, "no open facilities" means facilities are "closed" for student use. But you can decide for yourself.... Dead Period – No coaching, observing, or contact between coach and players in sport involved. There is no practice, no open facilities, and no weight training / conditioning. Open Facilities – Schools may use their facilities for students in their building prior to or at the conclusion of the school day. Coaches may serve in a supervisory capacity only. There is no instruction, no teaching, no coaching, etc. Coaches may not participate or play in any manner. It is a free play type atmosphere.
  10. How about 2 weeks beginning the last day of school?; just like at the end of the season.
  11. Could not be the last week in may due to sum schools still going and cant clse the facilities when they have to be utilized for school. Since when did the kids going to summer school use the gym, football field, baseball/softball field, weight room, etc, etc. The schools are open during "dead period". Just can't use the athletic facilities. TSSAA does not have the authority to tell a school system to close their schools.
  12. Sounds like your coach was like alot of us had in the 'old' hay hauling days. Nothing like the 'coach's' hay crew and 5,000 bale days in barns of 100+ degree temps! At the end of it you were happy to put the pads on and hit anyone! ..........and don't forget cuttin' and staking them tobacco stalks, then hanging them heavy things while balancing on beams in those barns as well.
  13. How about a graduated pay scale? A first year umpire shouldn't make the same as an umpire who's been umpiring for several years imho? 1-2 years: $X 3-4 years $X plus some. 5 years +: $X plus some more. 10+ years: $X plus some more. Thoughts?
  14. I don't think they have been taken over by the State as of yet. Their principle retired, rather than being removed; which stopped action by the State at this time. Don't know about the coaching situation?
  15. Only 58? I like your little sh; that's cute.
  16. I agree that Lewis against the competition in this district will help them come playoff time. But the question is: How is the new playoff qualifying going to work? This year the top 2 go, and the rest are wild cards aren't they. Someone indicated Lewis going 8-2 or 7-3. I'm not sure they will have that strong of a record? Since Giles plays 7 District games, how will they play 6 other games against 5A and 6A schools?

Could someone post the list or give a link? Thanks.
  18. Does the following statement by the TSSAA indicate there is a difference between "off season" and "summer": Section 8. For each sport there shall be a beginning practice date, a date for the first contest, a limit for the number of regular season contests, rules in regard to tournaments where applicable, rules in regard to off-season practice, and rules in regard to summer practice. I know this, if my Coach when I was playing held workouts, I better be there or there would be heck to pay come practice time.
  19. Rico seems to want to know if a Coach can make it mandatory or is it voluntary from TSSAA's view point during the summer. I don't think TSSAA addresses this. It is up to the individual Coach of the program if it's mandatory or voluntary. I know there are some baseball Coaches who make playing summer ball mandatory and some make it voluntary. I know some football Coaches who make working out mandatory and some who make it voluntary. I know the real athletes who want to play both, find time to do both and the successful schools will have Coaching Staffs that work together.
  20. Good answer Coach; and as my "Mimmy" used to say: "We find the time to do the things we really want to do."
  21. Congrats to all the "CHAMPIONS" that made it the Boro. Great atmosphere and overflowing crowds.
  22. Thoughts and prayers for the family, students, friends, and community from Middle Tennessee.
