  1. So you would not accept the extra pay????? lol
  2. Professionals should BE PAID! Why is it that some expect coaches should work for free or less than minimum wage? Do they not have college degrees and a professional certificate? Pay them for all of their services.
  3. Is this going to be another coach bashing thread? Why is it that some of you folks in Warren County can't stop bashing your coaches? Do you want the job? Is that what this is all about? Throughout the season and since the start of this year there has been this continuous list of questions and threads about Chris. Why not just go up to the man and talk to him directly rather than all this crap? A real man would meet face to face with him. I have no dog in this hunt but I can remember just a few years back when Warren County was the laughing stock of football and everyone's HOMECOMING GAME. The only coach in the past decade to make it a respectable program has been Chris Madewell. Now, I will be honest, I don't think any school in the new district other than Cookeville has a shot at going past the second round of the playoffs but that doesn't mean that Warren County can't finish in second place and possibly upset Cookeville again this year and finish in first place. Why don't we wait and see what happens instead of doing this again.
  4. What kind of quality head coach will you ever get to work at RBS? I'm not suggesting that some young coach might not want to go there and get "his start" as a head coach, but winning isn't going to be easy at a tiny school like RBS. They have good folks in Macon and Clay Counties but RBS is just on the edge of both and they are not blessed with loads of kids to pick from. If they win three games a year you have a successful season. Good Luck!
  5. All varsity Head football coaches must be certified to teach in TN and do teach at least two classes each day. If they are certified to teach PE/Wellness classes then they teach those classes and weight training. Many also work other duties like cafeteria and bus duty. Some are assistant principals. The point is they are hired to TEACH first and coach second. Very few head football coaches in TN earn more than an additional month's salary for all the 400 plus hours they put in at their second job, coaching football. Can you imagine any position in the "real business world" where the job describtion was to work 7 hours a day at the job that paid you 87% of your income and to put in an additional 400 plus hours a year for the balance of your income (13% at best). I know of a couple of head football coaches in TN who earn less than $2000 for their troubles. The reality of coaching is that coaches are expected to win. If you volunteer your time or you are paid $60K plus a year at a big school, if you don't win within two or three years you had better get out your resume and find a new place to work. People expect coaches to find a way to win, even if they don't have much talent. I do not know anything about the cituation at GHS although I have been at their school and I used to know a man who worked at GHS. They seem to have a fine facility and good people teaching at GHS. I am sure they will not have any problems finding a new head coach. Good luck!
  6. Clint, you are wasting your time, most of these folks failed government and have little understanding of the first amendment and the concept of freedom of religion.
  7. The Supreme Court did not rule on the case. Some of you men can't read! They refused to rule on the case and that allowed each state to set their own rules. Coaches can still bow their heads with their team in TN they just can't lead the prayer and that is how it should be.
  8. My problem with the A11 is the fact that ALL 11 PLAYERS WORE ELIGIBLE NUMBERS. I don't care about the placement on the field, just the numbers. Everyone sees the old Pole-Cat type formations from time to time and it does cause problems but your secondary can figure out who to cover if the five ineligible lineman are wearing a number between 50 and 79. It fundamentally changes the game of football to the point it is not football anymore when you allow all 11 offensive players to wear the same number. It changes the intent of the game and that is why the rule was redefined. The A11 offense took advantage of a poorly worded exception to allow an eligible player to lineup for punts as an "Special team" lineman to cover the punt downfield. The way they have changed the rules now only allows this formation on 4th downs in punting situations.
  9. A "deist" is just an older name for someone who is an agnostic. They may accept the concept of a "higher power" but they reject the concept that man has any contact with a "supreme being." By the standards of the day, Jefferson would have been considered an unbeliever. Ironically, you mention the Mayflower Compact. The people in Mass were not practicing religious tolerance at any time. They ran off anyone who did not subscribe to their brand of protestantism. It would be in large part because of their extreme views that the moderates concluded that the new nation should not adopt one religious view as the official state religion. Jefferson and Franklin wanted religious freedom and pushed the concept into reality.
  10. The first amendment declares both freedom of religion and I promise that GOVERNMENT will not endorse ANY religion; therefore, public school teachers can't lead their students or student athletes in prayer; however, they can exercise their right to pray individually. The supreme court has ruled several times since 1960 that teachers and school employees can't lead students in prayer, although most schools like the one I work at does have a daily moment of silence. In this case, there was NO RULING because the SUPREME COURT elected not to hear the case. Our nation was founded on the concept of RELIGIOUS FREEDOM and FREEDOM FROM RELIGION at the same time. This is why we call it a secular state. I am a proud, bible carrying Christian but I understand the idea that each of us has the right to choose to believe in the God of the Bible, or any other religion, or none at all. This is the AMERICAN WAY! In the same spirit, students can't and should not be forced by public school officials to pray one way or another. HOWEVER, if students want to pray after a game, and are not coerced into doing so by the coach or the team, that should be allowed. If a coach wants to bow his head and pray with them I think that too is fine. But it must be voluntary and not forced upon anyone. Shamwow you have got most of your facts wrong. Go back and take a history class. US currency has only had the words IN GOD WE TRUST since the 1950's and NO, the Constitution does not mention any specific religion. The Declaration does mention a CREATOR but it is very vague by design. The man who wrote the Declaration, Thomas Jefferson was not a Christian. Again, Louis Thompson should be allowed to pray with his students IMHO as long as he does not lead them in that prayer and I think that should be true of all coaches after football games, IF the team wants to do so.
  11. State law prohibits school employees from joining in student led prayer. This has been the law for decades but most coaches IGNORE the law and do it anyway. I have mixed feelings about this but I understand that we all have a right to pray but teachers do not have the right to force students to pray. A moment of silence would be better, then every one could pray or not pray as they see fit.
  12. You've never seen an offensive lineman put his shoulder pad or helmet on a defensive lineman knee? ACL/MCL??? Happens all the time.
  13. Good luck to the new coach at Sparta!
  14. I heard that the vote was unanimous to ban it at the NFHS offices. I am glad to see it gone!
  15. It sounds to me like some coach in the county is trying to stab a head coach in the back with all these postings. Now, I do not know this to be a fact but all these anti coach Schrenk postings do suggest someone has the old knife just about to plung down from behind. I don't know the head coach at NW but I would watch my back if I were you. I've seen it done before and it can get ugly for all parties. COACHT please close this thread!
  16. Here's the question we have to ask ourselves: Where do we cross the line from denying one groups religious freedom or surpress others religious rights. Just because the majority of US are Christians, does that mean we should have the right to influence others by our actions. Maybe that is not the right way to say it but it is obvious that at least one person who has posted on this thread has been affected by such actions. At the school where I coach, the head coach and most of the staff do pray with the boys before and after games, it has not been a problem. But I have worked at a school where we had a few Jewish and Muslim baseball and basketball players and for that reason we had a silent prayer instead of reciting the Lord's Prayer. I understand Coach Thompson's response and he certainly has the right to express himself in the way he did. Louis is a good Christian man and he is not going to allow anyone to tell him what he can and can't say. But I do understand that we are supposed to teach and coach all the students, even those who have other beliefs or don't believe anything at all. That's just my two cents, heck it might not be worth one cent. /bored.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bored:" border="0" alt="bored.gif" />
  17. Read LC's Coach Thomspon's comments about this possible Supreme Court Case and respond: http://www.tennessean.com/article/20090224...RTS07/902240330
  18. No, I checked with the TSSAA. If two 5A teams finish 1st and 2nd, then the winner of the two 6A teams will get in. They said the system is not perfect but that is how it works until they can find a better way to make the balance between large and small schools in district play.
  19. Where do you get this idea of one being weak? I never implied that in any way. What I was suggesting was that LC will probably finish either 1st or 2nd most seasons and since there are so many more 5A teams, it is possible that IF LC has a down season, two 5A teams could finish 1st and 2nd. The phrase "weaker team" was in reference to the scenario where a 1-9 team got into the playoffs (winner of LC and FC) if two 5A teams finished 1st and 2nd.
  20. I do think it is possible for just that to happen and if it does, then yes, one of the two 6A teams would go. I think Tullahoma and Columbia Central should be right up there near the top.
  21. Any more news on the new coach? Anyone know where Wiggins is headed?
  22. School districts across the state have fought this battle. The problem is NCLB and the demands of higher academic standards has forced many school districts to drop the 4th block classes.
