  1. Taylor Mangrum - Franklin - Brentwood Premier 92 - UT Chattanooga
  2. As many people have said , all lists of any type are subjective. In my opinion, lists compiled by those most knowledgable of the game are the most meaningful. They usually consider the performance of a player over the course of an entire season, not just certain games. With that said, the best evaluators of talent and skill are the college coaches and the most prestigious awards are the scholarships awarded to those players so that they can continue their careers at the next level. A list of players that have received scholarships to play in college is most representative of the "best" players in any sport.

  4. I agree with the observation on the goal keeping. It was very good play. All goals scored were good shots--nothing cheap. I believe that Shipman (Brentwood) is committed to Samford and Mangrum (Franklin) is committed to UTC. Not sure about the other 2. The game was enjoyable to watch as it was good soccer with some outstanding shot making on the offensive end, particularily from the EAST.
  5. The game will be played by all senior girls who have been nominated by their district/regional chairperson to participate. It is possible that the players chosen for this game were selected by people that actually viewed their play and made their selections based on performance. It is pretty clear that almost all of these teams of the players selected were in the state tournament. Just a thought.
  6. The game will be this week at Hendersonville. 7. I can assure you that a foul was called and that the restart was a direct free-kick, although in all practical terms they are the same thing and as both would be taken from the same general area, it's easy to see how the two could be mistaken for one another. Interested to hear the "more details"... Good to know that you are more informed than the Franklin coach and the actual game footage. Any ideas on health care reform?
  8. I repeat, a foul and thus a free kick restart was called. Keeper had had possession for a fraction of a second, wasn't in the air nor on the ground. Where was the attacker supposed to go? Both players were 100% committed to winning a loose ball. Both had a right to challenge for the ball. The collision occurred about 10 yards from the goal line. It was one of those unfortunate incidents that happens in high level soccer. The Brentwood player wasn't reckless, therefore no caution or warning was merited. I guess we both have differing opinions. I hope that Taylor recovers fully and quickly. You are correct regarding the differing opinions. However, no foul was called as a goal kick was awarded to Franklin, which in essence penalized them on the play (all confirmed by the keeper). Each side will see the play as they choose to see it. More details to follow........
  9. Correct. I'd change "after" to read "during" The Franklin keeper and BHS forward were both charging at full speed for the ball, the keeper winning the footrace, unfortunately coming off worse in the resulting collision. Correct. Brentwood scored in the 47th and 48th minute. How so? I'm assuming you are referring back to the keeper/forward collision? A foul was called IIRC. Why yellow? How would a caution have prevented the injury? Nothing could have prevented the injury. The issue is the lack of a warning and the fact that no foul was called. The play was not a 50-50 ball as the keeper had clear possession of the ball. The ball was knocked loose after the collision occurred either inside or right on the line of the "6".
  10. Were you at the game. That keeper has never given up 4 goals to Brentwood, for an entire season..She is out for at least one week with a concussion. The good thing is that will meet again in districts. As the old saying goes, what goes around, comes around....
  11. I know it's a matter of perspective but it appeared the goalie bobbled the ball and didn't have control of it, thus the BHS player was still playing it for possession/control. I still wish the FHS goalie hadn't gotten hurt---and hope for a speedy recovery! Bobble did not occur until after the collision. Ball was caught and the play should have been over.
  12. 0-0 at half time. Franklin keeper had to leave game at the half due to a concussion suffered from apparent cheap shot by Brentwood center forward on an unabated play on ball by the keeper. Typical....Brentwood...
  13. ESPN Top 50 shows Brentwood as No. 34 and Franklin as No. 47. Two teams from the same district in the Top 50 in country says alot for D 11-AAA. Something will change this week however: Brentwood at Franklin 9-10-09 at 7:00 p.m. Brentwood week!!!!
  14. Rankings are all opinions and make for interesting conversation but should be taken for entertainment value only. As everyone knows, the results are decided on the field. Lightening caused the cancellation of the Sunday night games in the Hendersonville tournament. The storm front settled in over the fields and did not move. The first game was shortened but considered completed after a lengthly rain delay while the remaining games were cancelled.
  15. Franklin 1 Shelbyville 0 Game shortened to 60 minutes due to lightening in the area. Remaining Hendersonville tournament games for Sunday were cancelled. Tough game for Franklin after a huge win against siegel on Saturday night.
  16. Hendersonville tournament: Brentwood 8 Shelbyville 0 Franklin 4 siegel 1
  17. Exactly.....keepers can make a lot of plays without being credited for a save. Also a shot that hits the crossbar is a shot, not a shot on goal. Basically a shot on goal is either a save or a score. A keeper punching out a corner kick in all likely hood is not a save, but can be a great play. A slow roller that can easily be picked up is seldom counted as a save in my book. Some of the 'scoring' of the keeper is subjective, just like ruling a hit vs. and an error, but I wish there was more continuity in the stats. You guys are correct on shot definition. I keep the stats for my daughter team and we define a shot as being "on frame" which means that the end result is either a save or a goal. Typically a shot has to occur within the "18" unless it is a direct kick off of a foul which is put "on goal". We do count punches out of the "6" as saves when they are served into the "6" off of corner kicks, crosses, or direct kicks. This should be consistent with college scoring. If the goal keeper comes out of frame (goal) to receive a ball, it is not a save, a good play yes but not a save. Also, balls where the keeper clears the ball out of the "18" are not counted as saves either. 40 saves is almost impossible (a shot every 2 minutes) unless one team so totally dominated the other that the ball hardly ever crossed mid field.
  18. I agree that the ball did go through the net but had the officials been in the correct position, they would have seen that the ball was passed to the middle from out of bounds. The goal would not have counted anyway and that was the arguement of the Franklin defenders and goal keeper. Good game anyway. Both teams left everything on the field.
  19. Franklin 10 Hillsboro 0 Franklin starters played less than 20 minutes.
  20. I agree. Franklin has 4 loses. 2 to Brentwood and 1 to McDonogh (No.2 team in USA per ESPN poll). They could meet in the finals. Last two games have been 1-0,1-0 with each team winning once.

  22. I agree with RaptorFan. The game was back and forth during the 2nd half as well and very physical with numerous fouls being called all over the field. Brentwood had a couple of good scoring opportunites that were turned away, as did Franklin. The goal did come on a PK as a Franklin forward was tackled inside of the 6 with 1:04 to go in the game. I do disagree with RaptorFan regarding the meaning of this game. This is a very intense rivalary that neither team wants to lose. The game was very physical and the intensity was quite high. Both teams were exhausted at the end. The mid state, especially district 11 will be well represented by these two teams next week, it they take care of business on Saturday. Either one could win the title, especially with what is happening on the east and west sides of the state.
