  1. I was under the assumption that all NCAA D-1 teams make money, But I think it is only around 70% or so...I'll do some more homework on it. And you aren't going to hear bad things about it, because who is going to bad mouth it? Politicians, News people, Coaches, presidents, advisors? You have to admit that I have a point on that one at least ELA. Football teams don't make millions each week ELA, I always thought they made tons, but it's not as pretty as you think. 2. If you choose to delete this, or move it to another thread, that is perfectly fine, but because I was called a jerk, and probably somewhat in regards to what I said, I did a little digging, and I came up with this material...Please do not personally attack me as I have only found it, I invite comments or questions, but will probably succomb to personal attacks which I have no problem with as long as they still are in direct correlation as to what I am posting. Title IX is part of the education amendments of 1972. Title IX states that no one can be excluded on the basis of their sex, or denied the benefits, of or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity that receives Federal financial assistance. Between 1992 and 1997 colleges added 5,800 female athletes but released 20,000 male athletes. At one time there were over 200 male gymnastic squads, but today there is less than 20. At many schools the majority of students are female, but if women have no interest in playing sports, male athletes must suffer. Colorado State University at Bakersfield is 64% female, but many of those females are in their 40ƒ€™s or 50ƒ€™s. These women got married or pregnant in their teens, decided to raise a family, and just recently returned to further their education. However, they do count towards the percentage of females on campus, thus they significantly raise the ratio. Over 90% of Division 1 womenƒ€™s basketball teams failed to make money last year. Womenƒ€™s basketball is the only female sport where colleges are even close to meeting their budget. Sadly, groups like the National Organization for Women are now targeting revenue enhancing sports, like football, because they feel those sports give out too many scholarships Does Title IX give women the oppurtunity to participate in sports? Absolutely, but if they aren't making money, they are losing money...this loss of money results in students having higher tutions, less scholarships, and the releasing of males whose programs might be making money.
  3. What fun is it to compete against only 7 other schools for a state title? or 6 other schools for a title...Or have to drive cross country and play someone you wouldn't see in the playoffs till the semi finals? Or play 2 games against the Super 7? A season in the life of D2-AA, and D2-AAA members... If they do change it, I would want it in this order... VG's plan, Split, ELA's plan (I like ELA's because it would really mean something to go to the playoffs, but I am not in favor of mathematic equations in order to settle things, as I said before teams would run up the score.) Multiplier is not on the list for those who don't seem to find it.
  4. In West TN...the 1a football is horrible, but that doesn't mean that all schools are like that...my team got crushed by USJ by about 25 points...I'm not going to sit here and bad mouth any school that beats my team like that...even if it was 4 years ago. nonews...I am familiar with the metro schools in memphis, who have kids that are better athletes than anyone on my team, yet only have about 20 kids on the team...have roughly 350 kids more then my school, and have about 8 parents in the stands...That's worse then apathy... Since West TN coaches are so apathetic, perhaps you could comment as to why you feel they are? [Edited by TheEgoHasLanded on 7/19/02 8:43A]
  5. haha, I like ELA...cus of his work ethic and his calm demeanor...although our views disagree, I highly doubt what you are saying nonews is true...
  6. haha, I humbly apologize for being a "jerk" but Title IX is very upsetting to someone like me...as I said before I am a minority, and I believe that the most qualified person should get the job. If you do not think that they don't shut football programs, baseball programs, and wrestling programs down in order to make room for girls athletics, you are dreaming...I'm not going to say they do it in high school, cus I doubt that, but Brown, Yale, Dartmouth, UCLA, and many other schools have been forced to put 18-22 year olds on the streets because their scholarships are no longer valid...Only about 10% of Women's D1 schools make money, therefore the rest lose money...I am sorry but that is wrong. TITLE IX has two parts, academic and athletic...I have no problem whatsoever with the academic part of it, I think it is wonderful and great... In response to VG's question, I failed to completely understand the volleyball thing...but either way, you could certainly challenge it, but at the high school level you might have problems.
  7. nonews, I like you and your posts, your witt is both scathing and humerous at the same time...I tend to disagree with you...the NFL is a business...but the athletes do care, and they do go out and work...I am a cowboys fan and only a cowboys fan, but over the last few years I have taken part in fantasy football, which really is a lot of fun, and makes you watch all the games, maybe you could look in to it or something. Meanwhile, I am still waiting for a response on why the MB System doesnt work...
  8. I don't think the pay has to be equal, I have read numerous books on it...I think the pay has to be equitable. I do not like Title IX because we replace sports that might be producing money with sports that don't and will not produce money. ELA-What if your football team got put on the shelf because the percentage of men playing sports as opposed to women was so great, and they could not get a female turnout, there fore they got rid of the football team to compensate for that. From the 1980's to well into the 1990's UCLA enjoyed the richest tradition of men's swimming winning I believe over 10 gold medals in that time...Today the pools are closed because of title ix, there is nothing fair about that.
  9. If they were a public school, then it could compete with girls...if it were a private school, it would not necessarily have to regulate the title ix precedures. I always thought a boy should challenge this and try and play volleyball, it would cause national headlines.
  10. I was refering to things such as title IX and Affirmative Action. Those are just two of the many questions I remember off hand. "Because I did not receive and answer about some of the questions I asked you, I will not ask you any more questions on this thread. I take it you choose not to care, which is perfectly fine, but I wish we could have established that on the front end." I posted that, and I'm sticking by it...I was honestly trying to understand why ELA thinks there should be a multiplier, to put numbers on schools is just like Title IX or Affirmative action, we are putting numbers on a large group of people, to please a few select individuals or to try and give oppurtunity to those who feel they have been denied rights. But I am through asking him questions, I will email me him privately, and perhaps he will read all of that, instead of parts of it, and then making me go back and type it over again.
  11. So let me get this straight? I am supposed to ask a question to you, wait for a response, by the off chance that you read my post, and then by the off chance you see my question since you say you only read particular words or phrases and not the entire passage, then wait for a response, and then possibly reask the question?
  12. You know what Chak...I agree with you 100%, but that isn't a basis to split or in my words segregate public and private is it? I'm not going to sit here and slap public school coaches in the face, cus they are good coaches as well...but they don't want to hear that, they think its just about athletes, thats fine let them think that. But those athletes are paying an arm and a leg to go there, and until you have been through that, then you won't really understand (I know you do Chak). It's kinda like having a full scholarship to one college, but instead choosing to pay full tution at another, and then people get mad at you for it...I just don't understand that. Harding Academy in the 90's was blessed with guys like Daniel Angus...6'8 over 230 who signed with Colorado and was considered the best tigh end in the country, they were still average to say the least and never made it to the playoffs when he was there, but the last two years Harding has gone further and made school history, yet do not have the kind of athletes like that...They got a new coaching staff, who does a great job, and pushes the kids in the weightroom, enlarged the weightroom, got a new locker room, new equipment, new weights, made the game field better, got new practice stuff, and bought other new supplies, the coaches were like father figures, they would drive players home, and even offered to have them stay at their house so they could attend lifts or stay out of trouble, they provided guidance and were all great men...I'm not saying public school coaches dont do that, but I am saying that kids seem to put in, what coaches put in...I never wanted to let my coach down when he was trying his hardest to do his best, what we did reflected him, and vice versa. [Edited by TheEgoHasLanded on 7/18/02 11:08A]
  13. Can someone please tell me what is wrong with VolGen's plan...I have not heard an argument yet that held up (including my own about memphis schools). The only one I saw that mattered was the Riverdale thing about how they couldn't move up, obviously you will have a team that is successful at the top of the ladder. Volgen's plan is the best in concept, as someone said earlier, "Why should this years seniors live up to last years?" Well I hate to tell you, but thats life. When you go to the state semi-finals one year, you are expected to do it again, thats why you set the bar high. I felt pressure this year for my team to advance to the playoffs, have a winning record, and beat the state champions that we hadn't beaten in 5 years. We did all of those things, and more...thats what makes it fun, and exciting. In the NFL, there is somewhat of a merit based system. If you win a lot of games, you play a difficult schedule, if you lose a lot of games, you play an easier schedule...they try and make it fair for all the teams.
  14. I'm not personally attacking anyone, if you feel the need to delete my question, then by all means do so. I simply asked him if he was happy coaching at a rural school. When someone talks about systemic problems, lack of funds, small player turnout, pressure for school consolidation, and a slew of other problems like playing private schools who have athletes at their hands, and also having to teach, and having to make tough decisions, one could reasonably infer that they are unhappy. I mow grass for the US Government and for numerous realtor companies within arkansas, tennessee, and mississippi, If I got on here and talked about how I have to go to Orange Mound or Whitehaven and evict people from their house, or wake up at 8 o clock, or mow grass when its 90 degrees, or watch my back for drug dealers, thieves, or prostitues, which is all true...you could infer that I was unhappy. I'm sorry, but I don't see how asking someone a question about their job is a personal attack, but as I said earlier you can delete it. ELA-I understand your example about kids not wanting to work out because they feel no need that someone will push them...that is a true statement, and I completely understand that...but that is true in all aspects of sports...College, Pro, or High School..Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe, Tiger Woods, Marshall Faulk, Manning...all could choose not to go to the OPTIONAL workouts, but on the whole they go. In fact it makes news when guys like Ray Lewis or Edge choose not to go to the Optional work outs. Because I did not receive and answer about some of the questions I asked you, I will not ask you any more questions on this thread. I take it you choose not to care, which is perfectly fine, but I wish we could have established that on the front end. As I said earlier, I said I couldn't find "systemic" in the dictionary, I didn't say it wasn't a word, I knew systemic was a word in regards to your body, but obviously that is not how I thought you meant it...Another example of you picking and choosing what you will answer, and then not commenting on some things that I talk about.
  15. on a side note ELA, Reading your posts, it seems as though you hate being a part of public schools, you can't recruit, have a fixed stipend, and don't have much say so...do you wish to coach at a larger school? a private school? or never coach, in all honesty, it's sad as you say...you are dealt a hand of cards, and it seems as though you have no say so on whether you can leave the system.
  16. I am going to post this in regards to the dicussion about mandatory lifting, as well as address the "systemic" problems you spoke of. By the way, I didn't find systemic in the dictionary, althought it could easily be a word...you might want to try, "systematic" which is "of, relating to, or done by a system," When I said Mandatory, I did not mean it as you thought I did...here is what I meant. Football Coach-Ego, if you choose to go coon huntin, or play with dolls, instead of going to lifting, you are jeopardizing your spot on the football team. I can not have you on this team if you are going to put other things ahead of our program. EGO-Coach, why can't I just show up the first day of regular season. Football Coach-Ego, you can, but I do not have to have you on the team, if you choose not participaate when everyone else does then that is your decision, but I am not obligated to have you on this team. That is not against the TSSAA rules...you can throw a kid off a team if he is being disruptive, detrimental, or you believe in the future he would do those things. ELA if you choose not to do the speed limit and speed, tthen you will face consequences, like suspension of your liscense, or pay a ticket...if I choose not to go to practice in the offseason, and sit at home and do nothing...I will have to pay the consequences. What is wrong with this situation ELA... Basketball Coach: Ego, if you play aau in the summer, and choose not to go to our practices and tournaments, I can not have you on the team...I am sorry you like to coon hunt, but this is more important. EGO: So you are telling me that if I choose to do something else, then you will ask me not to be on the team? Basketball Coach: Yes I am. If you say that is wrong, that is fine...but then you need to check out the basketball board, and go to the "Is AAU hurting us thread" and get every name of every coach who has threatend a player with that... I mean the way you say it...no one has to go to anything until the season starts, and if that is true, thats fine, but the coach doesn't have to have them on the team. In regards to "systemic" problems as you said... It isn't my fault that certain administrators choose not to support athletics by having fund raisers or attend football games. People hire principals and presidents for academic jurisdiction, that is why people go to school ELA, and if they choose not to support your football team I am sorry, but that is not my problem, your opponents problem, or the private schools problem, its your kids problem, and your problem. ELA, you coach a small 1a rural school, and you told me that I am a private school kid...who probably does not konw much about RBS, and you are absolutely right, I don't. But then again, I am a private school athlete who went to the same school for religious reasons for 14 years, and people on this board have many misconceptions about private school kids and parents as do I about public school kids, and that is a travesty into itself. But you coach a small 1a rural team, and you want to completely change the face of high school sports in this state. I mean honestly sit back a minute and think about it... you do. It's like I said before on the other thread, which you did not comment on... You think a group of about 20 armed men is supposed to beat a legion. I am sorry, but I have a problem with people who are small in number, like your school and your opponents, who try and change something that is much bigger then themselves. You make up a small percentage of 1A schools and an even smaller percentage of public schools! Would the TSSAA exist with out your gate revenue? probably so...but when you try and tear apart teams so your school will succeed I just don't understand...it seems to me that the same 1a public schools would still continue to dominate your classification... Please do not take this as a personel attack, I respect your hard work and dedication to this site, but I am against putting numbers or quotas on schools, and I am against a small group of individuals changing a larger body...I mean thats like Rhode Island trying to tell the East Coast what to do. ELA-if you choose not to answer the questions about Red Boilings and metropolitan athletes and how schools like Tredwell, Westside, Southside struggle even though they have athletes...you also seemed to not say anything about certain "quotas" like Title IX or Affirmative Action, something that I could easily be in favor of given my unique lineage. I answered your comment about "Work Harder" by simply explaining that privates would be forced to play schools that are larger, which is not the same as being forced to play a school that has as many boys as you. I completely understood your response, and although you might have said it tongue and cheek, I answered it honestly. I do not come on this board, purely for amusement, and especially this thread to sit back and bad mouth people or coaches...I come on here to see how teams are doing, get peoples opinions, and to see certain problems or solutions that might be brewing or arising. I will take it you sent us the answers to my questions through osmosis, telepathic link, or you didn't have an answer for it or didn't care... In all practicality we can rule out the first two, I used to think you did not answer me because I was young and new to the site, now I believe it is because you simply have no answer. [Edited by TheEgoHasLanded on 7/18/02 12:19A]
  17. So you can not punish a kid for not attending...is that what you are saying? The kid should want to go on his own behalf, especially if his friends are...and if his rivals are.
  18. VG...also remember Private school kids do not necessarily live in the area of the school...so they must commute back and forth during the school year as well as the summer to attend practices, games, and lifting dates. So I would go lift in the morning for football, so my dad took me at 740, I lifted till about 10...so he picked me up. I went to practice at 330 (if I wasnt having basketball camp) and my dad took me to school and then picked me up. Thats 40 minutes that my dad drove every day, he worked a job, and most of the time had to wait for me to get done lifting or get done with practice (in the real world you never quit finish at the desired time). OH YEAH that was mandatory, the only excuses were death in the family...VACATION during the summer was not an option, much less an excuse (for two years we didn't even have the dead week). If you were injured, you simply lifted with the arm that wasnt broke, or did upper body without using the turned ankle, and you NEVER ever missed a practice.
  19. Thanks CoachT... Not only did you respond, you answered my question...wow who would have thunk it.
  20. why can't you make lifting mandatory? That's what Harding and Briarcrest do...two teams that have combined for 6 semi final appearances in 4 years.
  21. CoachT, I respect you, and your opinions, you are the most fair individual I know on this site...Could you please tell me if you have ever coached at Private school? And if so when? And for how long, and what sports and or records? I know you said you coached against BGA and BA, I was just wondering, I won't use it against you or anything. To put a number on a team is inherently unfair...That's like putting a quota on Title IX or Affirmative action, I am a minority and I am against both of those, even if I would be able to draw compensation from it. Why don't we put a number on teams that have a bigger budget then most schools? Ahhh that doesn't mean the school is good does it? Same with a private school, once again 3 titles in 10 years, look at it, learn it, and love that fact public school supporters...I also used the 46-0 trouncing of Trousdale Co. at the hands of Clarskville Academy that no one commented on. CoachT...are you suggesting this, because there is a problem? Or are you suggesting this just to have an answer? I guess I am asking, do you think there should be a change, or you just suggesting a change like VolGen is doing? ELA...your point about "working harder" doesn't hold up, because privates would be playing schools that are bigger...not their same population, thats like saying a militia should destroy a legion if it works harder. That's like saying Bread Company X must work just as hard and produce as much bread as Bread Company Y even though X is smaller than Y...X is a private firm so their companies workers are from the entire city as opposed to Y who is larger and has one area...X also has to pay for their own supplies (just like a private would have to because they don't have a state budget)? Aside from the Bread company example, which is just a joke...ELA chose not to answer the question about athletes on the Red Boiling thread. Therefore we can assume he doesn't care, doesn't have an answer, or tried to relay the message to us telepathically. When you guys start answering my questions and comments, I will try and and understand how you can justify putting numbers on teams because they are not tied to the state budget and have to come up with their own resources...I am still laughing at the fact that ELA said he would get fired if he tried to raise money for his football team...I didn't know that lift a thons, car washes, bake sales, and walk a thons or just plain donations were illegal in the state of TN, but I have a lot of growing up to do.
  22. haha also a good post VG...I still side with ELA, just cus their aren't many Fulmer's that are going to take a job at School XYZ...why would you? 1-the school must have been losing in the first place. 2-your an outsider, need a house, move, etc. 3-if your so good, probably takin a pay cut 4-might be startin over from scratch 5-if your so good, why would you take that job? But still well said.
  23. FACS is at best third in 1-A, sorry bud...Bishop Byrne and SBEC are both a lot better. I don't go to either one of those schools, but I would like to see them win state, good luck.
  24. I like Ezell's defense...they seem pretty tough. I like Collinwood's offense... I think every team in 1A plays and practices extremely hard... Is the best team in 1A going to win state? Nope, not a chance. Any given day one of these teams could win...South Pitt, USJ, CPA, Collinwood, Ezell, and a host of others...I'm not as big of a 1A guru as I would like to be, so I'm not going to make any guarantees, good luck to all the teams
  25. It will return the day a private school beats a public... Nothing will be said as long as the public wins...I mean thats what they want, they want Collinwood or South Pitt to win it all, and seek vindication for all those hard fought years of imprisonment (haha 3 titles in 10 years) Honestly, I hope a public school wins it, and then we hear about how the privates knocked out all the other public schools in the early round...its a win win situation for some, and a lose lose situation for others.
